October 3, 201213 yr Hi all.... just thinking out loud a bit. I fly pretty much exclusively in Europe at the moment - it started with GEX and then UTX and then a number of payware airports and mesh. So it's a nice and reasonably realistic experience, but I'm a little bored and wondering what to do. Despite having plenty of European stuff there is still loads more I could get - I like photoscenery so things like FranceVFR, GermanyVFR appeal. Then there's Austria and Switzerland professional and I still haven't got round to getting the freeware Belgium and Netherlands photoscenery. Plus countless other airports, freeware and payware. Or I could start exploring the US - I think I'd get GEX and UTX first and have read about (but not tried) Glenn Johnson's apparently very good freeware airports, plus obviously tons of other great payware. I fly only tubeliners at the moment, no GA. Any thoughts?
October 3, 201213 yr Or you could head to Australia. You can purchase all ORBX regions in one package, add some airports if you like, and with ORBX New Zealand you can also head across the Tasman Sea. There is a lot of great freeware available in the AussieAnts package and plenty of other authors. There is also a free ORBX demo available for Tasmania/Launceston if you just want to dip your toes in at first. Cheers, Alex
October 3, 201213 yr The one thing to remember about the US is that the distances between the bigger cities seem to be much further than in Europe. I love flying in the US every so often just for a change and there are some great airports and sceneries available, but if you prefer flights below 2 hours between cities you have actually heard of (as a European..) then you will quickly find yourself limited. Have a go at something like KSEA to KSFO which is one of my favourite flights ever, particularly with Orbx PNW and flightbeam's KSFO, or KORD - KJFK if you fancy the big airports. Australia and New Zealand are great to fly as well, and I would definitely recommend the Orbx if you went for that. The good news is that you wouldn't need anything else (GEX, UTX etc etc) as it covers the whole region unlike in US.
October 3, 201213 yr I only have the freeware Netherlands scenery installed myself. It looks great, but lets face it... My country is flat as a pancake; speaking of boring. I have been looking at some of the Orbx scenery as well. A few people have posted screenshots of the Orbx Pacific North West scenery in the screenshots forum. I must admit, that looks really great; coastline, (snow topped) mountains, and some interesting airports. It might be worth checking out, and check out their freeware stuff, too. EDIT: Here are 2 of the threads with pics from Orbx PNW: http://forum.avsim.n...tle-washington/ http://forum.avsim.n...s-on-gentlemen/
October 3, 201213 yr Do you get PC Pilot magazine? I always enjoy their tutorial flights from various regions of the world. Recently they had a trip from Las Vegas to Reno, which inspired me to get GEX so that my screenshots looked like theirs! The desert scenery is dramatic, and the flight a reasonably short one. It's amazing how when faced with an entire world to explore, we struggle to think of somewhere to fly, so I appreciate these sort of articles. Ian
October 3, 201213 yr There are VERY good demos of the Orbx PNW and Tasmanian scenery, well worth getting in their own right. Cheers Keith ...
October 4, 201213 yr ha ha ha, like a kid with a new bike who doesn't know where to ride to first! Have you tried FSApproaches? Practice approaches to anywhere in the world... PC Pilot had an article or is it series they are doing, on the most dangerous approaches I think...? (Correct me if I'm wrong, I think that's where I saw it.. Richard... October 4, 201213 yr Kinda cool to read this, as I fly almost exclusively in the US and find myself bored over here, and had the same questions about Europe. Lol. William Sequeira
October 4, 201213 yr Commercial Member Or you could explore Caribbean / Central American region, recently Flight 1 released UTX for that area and also there are a lot of good sceneries for Caribbean, including some from FranceVFR.
October 4, 201213 yr Author Thanks for the ideas all - I hadn't thought about Orbx but it sounds like it's worth considering. Are the airports contained within FTX Oz of payware quality? I think for now I will carry on with Europe - looks like there's a lot of good freeware scenery and airports that will keep me busy for a while
