Looking to improve the FS4 (9) clouds. Tough to sort out all the stuff and not familiar with where to look.

Would appreciate any suggestions. Prefer easy load. No code delete/paste, etc.

Installing REX will completely revamp your FS9 - clouds and almost everything else. It's very easy to install and will give you almost a new sim. There are other cloud sets but REX gives you so much more. Check through the forums and you will see dozens of "rave reviews"

btw, anybody remember those stacked sugar cube blocks... cloud renderings of FS5.1? Amazing the progress we have seen over the years...

I've had the HDE 1.0 clouds since they first came out.

 

I'm very pleased with them and also highly recommend them.

I still use Flight Environment available from Flight 1. It's about six years old now but it does the job for me. The interface is simple and quick and the product is not a resource hogger either.

Now that you all say REX, how good would it be for my laptop (see specs)? I mean, I'm sure there will not be any frame rate impact. But, will my Intel GPU ruin the image quality I'm expecting REX to deliver? My GPU is up to the task, except that neither AA nor AF work at all.

You won't regret it. I think there's almost unanimous agreement on here that REX is the best buy you can make to improve FS9

I wish I could give you an answer Luis but I truly do not know. REX does give you a choice of high and low resolution textures so you can tweak it for your system's capabilities, but as for a specific GPU or rig, I don't know. Logically I would think it wouldn't make any difference- if it can run FS9 then it should be able to run REX but you may get a small FPS impact. My guess is that it won't be extreme and the dramatic benefits will outweigh any negatives, but it's just a guess...

I've tried using RE Pro (the closest thing to a REX demo), however, due to the lack of AA and AF in my GPU, I had to replace the RE Pro taxiway lines with the default ones: the black borders made those lines shimmer a lot. However, I need to check for all other things that RE Pro changed, specially water.

It sounds to me like REX might not be a good purchase for you Luis - unless you buy it from a site that offers a full refund if you're not happy with it...

Clouds are the one thing sure to affect frame rates on any computer.

 

The higher resolution, the addition of cloud layers and the density of clouds will all take a substantial toll on frames regardless of AA and AF.

 

My suggestion is to first try the freeware approach and, if tolerable on your machine with your preferred settings, then consider payware solutions such as REX.

 

HDE 1.0 and HDE 2.0 give similar results to REX's cloudscape. Why don't you give them a try?.

Probably right Jon but if you look at the OP's PC specs you will see that his cpu is clocked at only 2.4 GHz and using onboard video.

If you want a nice set of clouds already rendered then Pablo Diaz's clouds in the library are the best.

Thank you everyone. Actually, I've been using Pablo Díaz HDE for some time, plus Soft Horizons and RE Pro (since release eons ago). Regarding performance, I have no objections at all, however, I need to check again the effect in image quality, taking into account the lack of AA and AF, maybe I haven't realized my GPU is not that bad (or maybe it's too bad).
