October 17, 201213 yr I mean it. I'm not trying to be rude in any way, point fingers, shout anyone down, etc. of that sort. I understand if your computer has a legitimate performance issue and us at the forum are always willing to hand out advice. Please feel free to tell us about it! But please, keep things nice and don't get mad, especially at us (I've seen this so many times). FSX is a complex system that is very buggy because it has had no further updating since Acceleration (Unless you count Prepar3d as one, which I don't). FSX, even on high end machines, has many hundreds of things to calculate at any given second. Here's a list of SOME of the calculations just to give an idea of what FSX is capable of (please note I may be wrong on some of these as these are my own inference, but I do know FSX has to calculate a lot): How to Draw Scenery (more complex with add-ons) Where to draw scenery. What textures to place on the scenery Where to place the textures (again more complex with add-ons) How large to draw the textures How to apply the selected in game settings (this is a biggy because there are so many combos, but lower settings general fare better here because they are easier to load. This is a big factor on the calculations listed here and not listed.) How to draw the aircraft (HUGE depending on aircraft polys both inside and out [this is why Captain Sim and PMDG's are big on frame issues most of the time]) Where to draw the aircraft at given times based on speed, altitude, and attitude calculations) How to position the camera (pretty big due to so many combos) How to judge the programmed parts of the aircarft (again huge) How to draw the animations How to draw certain clouds Where to draw certain clouds What textures to use for the clouds What textures are used on the aircraft (biggy) Judging how the air will affect the aircraft (winds) Judging how the air will affect clouds How to draw autogen Where to draw autogen What textures to use on autogen How to draw scenery Where to draw scenery What textures to use on the scenery How to draw airports (biggy if they are addons or have lots of scenery) Where to draw airports What textures to use on airports Where to draw airport parking, runways and taxis for ATC Where to draw airport parking, runways and taxis for AI How to draw AI (BIGGY) Where to draw AI What textures to use on AI Where to draw the sun Drawing the sun textures Deciding which sky textures are to be used Re-sizing of all aforementioned textures and any listed after this to fit the correct objects/effects What the aircraft (yours) needs to be doing based on hot-key presses, current situation, and aircraft programming (can be big) What the aircraft (AI) need to be doing based on current situation and programming (can be a less strenuous on software because AI are not designed near the complexity of today's add-ons) Deciding which effects to use Deciding when and where to use said effects Applying the textures of said effects Loading the GUI Deciding how to display the GUI based on custom selected GUI textures or default Loading missions Loading sounds in missions and when to do so Loading anything previously stated again if another flying session is loaded without shutting down the sim (can be big) Deciding which cores of the PC to use to load certain aspects Loading each aircraft into the GUI FSUIPC (can be big if using many programs with it at once, or at least it can on my PC) Deciding how to handle hardware (joysticks, yokes, rudder pedals, throttles, TrackIR, etc.) Deciding how payload and fuel affect aircraft flight and behavior These are just some of the more major calculations FSX does, not to mention the many hundreds more smaller ones. Now, the point of this wasn't to annoy you, make you angry, point fingers, complain, or bore you. It was simply to give an informational bout those out there who complain about performance here like it's our fault (no pointing fingers, but you know who you are). Now I am a respectful and respectable human being who loves flight simming as much as the next user on this site, and likes to socialize with the community, but complainers can make that difficult to enjoy. Please do keep in mind, we at the forum are always going to listen to your argument and respectfully keep in mind that you are a human being too, no matter how angry at us or how awfully you treat us. We are always going to help you with kindness and support, so we'd greatly appreciate the same back from you. So please, if you do bad with performance in FSX, please let us know and we're glad to help! But please don't complain to us like it's our fault. Want to brag how good yours is? Go ahead! We will congratulate you (and maybe plot to steal your computer ) and maybe get jealous, but we're glad to hear from happy simmers! Thanks for listen...well...reading, -Chris FS2004 Forever
October 17, 201213 yr Not to complain but couldn't you use far fewer words to make your point? This is a pun. Rant on! Everyone deserves an opportunity to let off steam once in awhile....now I hope your feeling better. Bryan Wallis aka "fltsimguy" Maple Bay, British Columbia Near CAM3
October 17, 201213 yr Author Thanks for even reading it Everyone needs a little pressure release once in awhile, and I had mine. I feel much better and I hope my point gets across. FS2004 Forever
October 17, 201213 yr I agree with you, I mean what is the point of getting mad over a simulator. It is very realistic and fascinating, but it isn't real and it doesn't have feelings. People do, and we are here to help, so lets get along! ORBX- the way to go Sincerely, John McGee
October 17, 201213 yr Author Exactly my point. We have to understand that, because of what Microsoft has done, unless something happens or we all switch to Prepar3d, this flightsim will likely never be updated again save the addons. It was still buggy when Microsoft left it, and it will forever be that way. This leads to many performance issues. We just have to build systems to go around FSX's problems, not try to make FSX get over the system's problems. And getting mad at it or us will not help. FS2004 Forever
October 17, 201213 yr Say what you like, I don't mind OK, thanks. Just a lot of words, time and effort for a post that will disappear quickly. And I have heard the same for every release since FS2. Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
October 17, 201213 yr I understand this argument, though I would offer the following to consider: Had certain, more forward-looking design decisions been made we wouldn't be having this discussion. FSX could leverage the power of the modern programmable GPUs and multi-core CPUs to calculate vastly more information at a much faster rate. In order to meet design goals set by management (in particular release targets), Aces had to make certain concessions with regard to FSX's code (especially the graphics engine) which produce the sort performance we see even today that many users lament, even those with PCs that can perform an order of magnitude more calculations per second than the hardware that was available when FSX was released. We can see the evidence of this sort of "rushed" design cycle in the subsequent service packs (plural) which lead to a "preview" (read: incomplete) DX10 implementation which was originally intended to be an integral feature of FSX's graphics rendering engine. For proof of this point see the marketing material and company statements surrounding FSX leading up to release, indicating that it was to be a "DX10 showcase" title meant to show off the graphics power of and to ship simultaneously with Windows Vista. Is FSX bad or broken? One could argue either way, which tells me that it's probably not as it has enough strengths to justify its existence and continued use, certainly. Do I wish it were developed with a more robust and future-proof engine which would take advantage of today's hardware? Absolutely. Alas, it is not, and we need to rely upon overclocking even 6 years from the original release date in order to "max out" the sim, especially with add-ons. Of course one could make the argument that the add-ons are at fault here, and I can't discount that idea, though I will restate my original point that were FSX designed "properly", again, we would not be having this discussion.
October 17, 201213 yr It is true though. Some of us older pilots will remember Flight Sims on the SInclair Spectrum and the early FS games on Windows circa 1995. FSX is amazing despite the occasional glitch ^_^
October 17, 201213 yr Yeah, ranting is good! but, for the guys that do rant - all is not lost: all you need is a capable machine, some patience, plus FSX in DX10 mode... https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ad5ydxa2gfenq2j/n-4trNO0Lx i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.

That's with DX10 and tweaks. We're still not there. Granted, this is an absolute worst case scenario and I'm pushing the limits to the extreme, but the point is FSX can be configured in such a way as to bring *any* machine to its knees. Keep in mind this is just running on one of my three monitors and I have yet to install REX (waiting for Essentials Plus) so performance can be expected to dip even further.
October 17, 201213 yr Yes - I know we're still not there, Max - but DX9 on the present system can't do what it can in DX10 mode - we're not going to get that until Nvidia releases the GTX1280 T-Rex GPU, along with Intel's i9-8800M (for Monster) CPU with 32 real cores.... :LMAO: i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
