October 28, 201213 yr Ok, I understand this might be a bit loaded, but I'm trying to figure out the benefits of an IB processor over the SB-E. This is not neccessarily FS only related. From what I see the new IB processors give you better PCie lane support and overclockability? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Here's the 2 builds: The 1st build allows for quad channel memory where the 2nd one does not. I left out the graphics options as I'm still reconsidering ATI. The problem is the 9000 series which are upcoming just teases me. The problem with ATI is that the drivers make playing anything almost impossible due to constant black screens, so I may just switch to Nvidea and hope for the best...lol. Especially for FSX. I'm getting really tired of having to constantly restart games just to get them stable again. October 28, 201213 yr Author Ben, Thanks for that. Yes you would think the 2011 is overkill. Funny you say that, being the IBs are newer...hehe. Part of my dilema is why it would be overkill when the IBs are newer. I'm also assuming money no issue, etc. Just stock for stock. Jeff D. October 31, 201213 yr If money were no object, I'd get the 3930K and overclock it as high as it'll go. I would also get some decent cooling, be that real watercooling or even a step further. But that's me: I like extremes. I am not scared of pushing 1.56V into my 2600K to have stable 5.0. So it all depends on what you are ready to risk. Besides, you can get the extended warranty from Intel, so you have your extreme overclocking secured too! IMHO, FSX is more going to benefit from high overclocked 3930K + 6 cores more than from 3770K. Only if you are ready to de-lid the 3770K, lap it, put the coollaboratory liquid on it instead the paste, then get some extreme cooling, you will get slightly lower clocks out of it, but IB will make it up with the slightly higher IPC. I personally would get the 3930K, and not the IB... but, that's me.

Part of my dilema is why it would be overkill when the IBs are newer. It wouldn't be overkill if you're running multi-threaded software... and/or doing a lot of video encoding/working with Adobe PS etc etc. But for FSX I agree it is. I'd go for the 3570K with a nice aftermarket hsf (Corsair H80/100 or Noctua DH14 etc) | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
October 31, 201213 yr Author Thanks guys. Yeah a sealed Antec Kuhler is on the list...prob ones for the GPUs as well. I used to have a Koolance setup on my old build. Too much trouble for the new one...lol. I do use Adobe as well as other apps that could benefit....which is another reason I've stuck with ATI also. Prob still gonna switch to Nvidea though. So basically the IBs are only new for the mid level segment other then better PCi lane support maybe, which is probably not that big of a deal unless I want to quad SLI/X-Fire. I'm thinking a dual GPU single card would be the way to go, beacuse in most cases X-fire doesn't even work properly for most games and apps. Appreciate the comments. Jeff D. October 31, 201213 yr Agree with Bert... the best nvidia card for FSX right now is the GTX680: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814130768 I'm sometimes in the same boat as you, Jeff - I like to enjoy other games, Battlefield 3, for instance that makes use of xfire/SLI.... but my 570 holds out very well. | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
October 31, 201213 yr Why is a 3930K a poor choice? - more threads for texture loaders, FSX *is* using them - quad channel memory (not a huge plus, but a plus nevertheless) - higher binned most probably, so better chance of reaching some really high clocks But any IB is also good, though you should de-lid in that case.
October 31, 201213 yr Author Word Not Allowed: you mean the 3770? I'm aware of the graphics card issue with FSX...the problem is I use other apps and games. Jeff D. November 1, 201213 yr Author I mean the CPU: 3930K. So why is ATI better than Nvidia in other games? So far as I can tell it's not...LOL. That's one of my problems. I've heard the plus with ATI cards is more when it comes to video rendering although I can't imagine Nvidia being that far behind, if at all. Jeff D.
