GFX Card reccomendations

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I'm considering getting a new graphics card, as mine is now over a year old and not quite up to scratch compared to the rest of my rig.

I'm looking to spend £150-£200 ish but budget is slightly flexible. Currently got an ATI Sapphire HD 6790 1GB card.

I'm flying the NGX mostly and using lots of addon scenery, would like to get about 30FPS at all times but often this slips - The rest of my rig is somewhat quick so my reckoning is it's time for the new card!

I'd like to stick with ATI, but could be convinced to go Nvidia if someone has a compelling reason for doing so...

Many thanks,

James

Well to be honest I just updated my video card and it didn't help in fsx at all besides faster texture loading no fps improvement. Might want to consider over clocking or a faster Cpu because when i pgraded my Cpu to 3.7ghz from 2.8 it made a world of difference

A new graphics card will make a significant difference in payware sceneries and clouds. Especially since you are currently using a low-end AMD GPU.

I reccomend the GTX660Ti. - Inexpensive, blazing fast, and it runs cool and quiet.

Already got an I7 2600K running at 4.8GHz so I can't get much faster! Not going for Ivy as I've heard that the difference in performance is negligible.

Think I may agree with you actually, looking to go for this card, reviews well. Does anyone know what the steps are that must be taken when upgrading to a new GFX card? (FSX.CFG stuff etc....)

I got me a Gtx 580 off of EBay for $200, made an improvement

Its all to do with 'tesselation' and nvidia cards are supposedly better at tesselation than ATI so remain the choice of video card for FSX (other games ATI may be better). With a 2600K a GTX580 if you can get one would be good or at least a GTX 670 or 680 if affordable. I run a 2600K at 4.8GHz and I found that a GTX 660 was "throttling" the cpu in certain heavy scenery areas, so I switched back to my GTX 580 and that certainly helped. But like verything to do with FSX it will vary from PC to PCowner.

So is the general feeling that my old 6790 is going to be slowing down FSX when compared to the GTX660/670? I'd hate to spend £200 and find that it doesn't make a difference...

Peter,

I think this is the first report Iv'e seen of how the GTX660 works in FSX. Can you please tell a bit more about the areas where the GTX580 works better than the GTX660?

I find this really interesting as I would assume this would apply to the GTX660Ti as well in those scenarios given that both of the 660 models have significantly lower ROP and memorybandwith than the GTX 580 but at the same time quirte a bit higher shader throughput.

I know Ben is very happy with his upgrade from the GTX580 to the GTX660Ti but it's always good to hear experiences from different type of usage to get a clearer picture.

It could be idiosyncratic or conjecture - but I read somewhere that the 6xx series Keplers were not as powerful wrt a simulation (as opposed to a "game") as the later FERMI cards - who knows? It was just that I found that the 580 seemed to handle dense scenery areas than the 660 ie I got less stuttering and less popping with the 580. I'm about to try a 670 and I'll see if that is any better. I think that everyone will be different and maybe it was wishful thing on my part, perhaps I wanted the 580 to be better!! BTW I still get very good results with my "old" GTX480!

I guess that the 660TI might be slightly better than the plain 660 due to the way nvidia choose the chips for the various models.

Thanks for your comments.

  • 1 year later...

I have an Asus GTX 660TI running with an i5 3570K running at 4.8ghz.

Very happy with this combination flying mainly PMDG 737NGX & PMDG777

I love my ASUS GTX680, besides FSX I can throw any game at it and it just laughs.

The GTX 760 is getting very good performance reviews almost on par with the 670. It certainly outperforms the 660ti and at lower cost compared to the 660ti release price.
