Looking into Dual or Triple Monitors

Featured Replies

Greetings All -

I'm considering going into a Multiple Monitor Setup. Either Dual or Triple. I've heard different sides of the coin, so hopefully I can get some good input.

Current System Specs -

AMD Phenom X4 965 3.4 (No O/C)

ASUSTek M3a76-CM

8GB DDR2 (I'm guess DDR3 would be a better route)

NVIDIA GTX 550TI 2GB

Acer P23'' 1920x1080

FSX SP2

RC V4

ASE

UT2

PMDG 737NGX

Would it be safe to purchase another P23" hook into the GPU (second DVI port) and expand the desktop? If I wanted to go "triple" invest to a beefier graphics card? I also see the TripleHead2Go systems out there as well. What is the vibe on those setups?

Is it even possible to expand the VC with the PMDG 737NGX between multiple monitors/streched desktop?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I have been through just about all of the setups possible.... Single 17", single 22", triple 23", single 23", single 40", and now a single 27".

I can confidently say that triple monitors is a massive hassle and is highly overrated. I would strongly recommend going for a large, quality single panel display.

While I have been there with Ben on the initial hassles, I then tried "wrap-around" with 2x 580's, 3x 27" LED displays and P3D and has been the easiest conversion ever. Don't know if it was just the different sim platforms that made it so (I am assuming so), but I know I will never go back to a single display.

Intel i9-12900KF, Asus Prime Z690-A MB, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, (3) SK hynix M.2 SSD (2TB ea.), 16TB Seagate HDD, Gigabyte GeForce 5080 RTX, Corsair iCUE H70i AIO Liquid Cooler, UHD/Blu-ray Player/Burner (still have lots of CDs, DVDs!)  Windows 10, (hold off for now on Win11),  EVGA 1300W PSU
Netgear 1Gbps modem & router, (3) 27" 1440 wrap-around displays
Full array of Bravo, Saitek and GoFlight hardware for the cockpit. Varjo and HP VR headsets for mixed reality.

Agree, migrated to P3D works Very good

I run FSX with 3x27" monitors and a 4th for a moving map FSCommander. It runs great at 5780x1080. ATI eyefinity, no separate hardware required. Some pop up windows can appear streched (example CDU's) but can be re-sized.

FSX was no problems in this environment, i run in windowed mode with many addons. Getting Eyefinity working was somewhat trying, i have two DVI connected monitors and 2 connected via active (that bit is important) mini-display port to DVI. ATI cards generally also have a HDMI connector, but this cannot be used at the same time as the DVI one.

Hmmm. Not sure what hassles guys are referring to, but I've been running 3x23" monitors for a few years now, and all ever had to do was plug them into one graphics card (ATI 5830). A close friend and member of my flight group has run 3x24" monitors on three different configurations, and ever suffered so much as the smallest difficulty.

The benefit of 3 monitors over one large on is the extended side views. The "zoom" factor at the outside edges takes a few flight to get used to, but once we did we found it comes to our advantage. Picture flying a commerical aircraft and being able to see the entire cockpit and outside both sides for reference. Nothing like it. I've sat in front of one large monitor with the same aircraft (38" on my rig and a 50" LED TV on another friends) and there was no comparison in my opinion, the three monitors was hands down the way to go for commcerical aircraft. I suppose flying light aircraft, I could see why one might prefer one large monitor, though I think my preference would still be for the extreme wide view that comes with three monitors.

I tried the two monitor setup for commercial, and it's a total fail even with changing the eye point. Really needs to be three or more.

ATI's Eye Infinitty makes this all too easy (plug and play really), and the later NVIDIA cards also suport multi-monitor support.

Finally, you can probably pick up 3 LED HD Televisons for less money than comparable monitors, especially with the sales coming up for Thanksgiving in the States and/or Christmas. This would enable you to go with say three 32 inch to 38 inch HD LED TVs, which satisfies both perspectives and will provide incredible clarity and definition.

Three monitors/tvs will place a slightly higher load on your CPU/GPU, but it's nothing earth shattering in my experience. I run a first generation i7 computer, originally under an i-930 processor and currently under an i7-930 with 9GB of RAM. My FSX graphics settings are for the most part maxed out and I run mostly high quality payware aircraft and graphics for Mesh, Landclass, Autogen, REX Essentialls for Cloud textures and ActiceFky Evol for the weather engine. Basically, I have a lot running when I'm flying on VATSIM (under FSINN), and i don't suffer any lag at all.

Hope this helps.

System Specs:  I9-13900KF, NVIDIA 4070TI, Quest 3, Multiple Displays, Lots of TERRIFIC friends, 3 cats, and a wonderfully stubborn wife.

I run 24"X3 + 19" touchscreen as the 4th. with a nVidia GTX6xx card, The 4th now replaced with a Garmin 430 from Desktop Aviator.. and I love it. No hassle whatsoever...

Its all here
