November 16, 201213 yr I flew a 47 mile clandestine mission during the day with the C-46 in isolated thunderstorms into Shishmaref. The wind speed varied anywhere from 14 to 80 knts and from ever direction. with very strong Up and down drafts galare, I could never get over 3,000 feet. I was almost inverted a couple of times. Stalled out and almost driven into the ground several times. I heard from the co-pilot " nice way to add spice to the flight, but not a good idea on this particular mission". He repeated this warning 8 times in 47 miles during the flight. My fuel consumtion was way over that I throught it would be due to running at 100% power the whole trip. I was really sweating the landing with only 2% fuel remaining. But I got her down in one piece and got the cargo unloaded. Think I will sit out this weather and hope it looks better in the morning. All together a very interesting flight. My hands are still shaking! Sorry,no pictures, the camara got broken bouncing off the cabin ceiling. Steve
November 16, 201213 yr :LMAO: :LMAO: :LMAO: Good job. I've done one of those myself in the Maule. One only!. Thank you. Rick $Silver Donor EAA 1317610 I7-7700K @ 4.5ghz, MSI Z270 Gaming MB, 32gb 3200, Geforce RTX2080 Super O/C, 28" Samsung 4k Monitor, Various SSD, HD, and peripherals
November 16, 201213 yr Makes me wonder what the gruff, whiny co-pilot would have said! "We're all gonna die! We're all gonna die!!" Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
November 16, 201213 yr Or something to the effect that "If I live through this, I'm gonna kill you!" Thank you. Rick $Silver Donor EAA 1317610 I7-7700K @ 4.5ghz, MSI Z270 Gaming MB, 32gb 3200, Geforce RTX2080 Super O/C, 28" Samsung 4k Monitor, Various SSD, HD, and peripherals
November 16, 201213 yr I only crashed during a cargo mission once... a load of ducks, of all things. Ran out of fuel on final approach and went into the ocean. The co-pilot's last words were, "No... not like this!" During the second attempt after going back to the checkpoint, I did not go to full prop or full rich mixture and made it with enough fuel to taxi to the unloading area. That's twice I've crashed on final when I went to full rich. Note: the Stearman glides like a brick. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
November 17, 201213 yr Its flights like that give a non-pilot like me a pretty visceral education why you don't want to take real planes out on weather like that. And it's also another thing that flight does very well. I have never played a sim where those random gusts felt so smooth and real. And in your case, scarey! We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically. November 19, 201213 yr I have never played a sim where those random gusts felt so smooth and real. True, in what concerns updrafts / downdrafts it's unique and very realistic (I've been in situations like that in RL). Unfortunately windshifts (direction) inherited the same smooth effects, which are unrealistics, from previous versions of MSFS.. In RL a windshift / shear of more than 90 deg, like some comon under such situations in MS FLIGHT, would cause a lot more of effect... November 19, 201213 yr Hmmmmm......... The effect you are talking about must be more pronounced in real aircraft then. The wind affects in flight feel real to a non-pilot like me, I believe, because they fit with my lifelong "body feel" of high winds while walking, running, riding in various types of vehicles, etc. Which might, as you say may be unrealistic to your contrary RL experience in a glider, for instance. I am going to suspect though that nothing, not even a multimillion-dollar simulator does it all though, especially in conditions on the edge of the envelope. Which does not stop us from striving for more and more realism! I've often wondered however, if the perfection this hobby often desires is realistically achievable at a consumer price point. November 19, 201213 yr Devon, let's just say that MS FLIGHT reaches very close to perfection, in some aspects.... The truth is that is is still, in terms of flight sensation/ immersion, the one that gives me a better time :-) Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)
November 19, 201213 yr Aerofly is not bad either, at least for gliding. I am not sure about some of the fancy new stuff for FSX, but I suspect even those are going to have their quirks.
