Sandy Bridge Vs Ivy Bridge for FSX

Featured Replies

For you guys who have been with both the Ivy Bridge and/or Sandy Bridge CPUs, what are the performance differences? (if there are any) and if you've overclocked it, what are the temperature and performance differences between the SB and IB?

I've started this thread to gain a larger picture of what people think about these two CPUs and how they're getting on with it using FSX. Honestly I've never owned an Ivy Bridge but I'm very happy with my SB I5-2500K overclocked to 5Ghz . Here's my experience with my CPU...

In the winter as the OAT in London drops to around -3c and the temp inside my room is around 18-25c(below 13c when heaters are off), I overclock my CPU to 5Ghz and ohh boy.... FSX runs like a dream. I get no less than 96 FPS when FSX is on Max settings and also running PMDG 737NGX, REX and a lot of heavy sceneries such as FTX England/ FSDreamTeam KJFK and Flytampa Dubai rebooted etc... And on top of that, my CPU never reaches above 64 degrees celcius.

In the summer though, it's whole different story. OAT usually reaches to around 31-34c(sometimes even 36c) and my room temp is no less than 27c. Because of this I'm forced to downclock my CPU to around 4.0 to 4.3Ghz and got around 61 to 69 stable FPS on the same FSX settings. On 4.3Ghz, my CPU don't reach more than 68c

Seriously, that defies logic. Not trying to rain on your parade, but that makes no sense at all Lionel.

You get a 40 - 57% perf boost out of OCing from 4 to 5GHz, which is a 25% increase in clock speed? Hard to believe man

I have an i7 3770K Delidded and OCed to 4.9. FSX runs better than I have ever had it run before. I keep my frames locked at 60 (60Hz refresh rate) and normally get 25-35 in the NGX VC and 60 in flight. Stress test temps are 88C during 30 runs of Intel Burn Test at Max Memory (14ish GB and about 3.5 hours) and 81C during 12 hours of Prime95 Blend. My sim temps under load haven't exceeded 60. Not sure what my ambient room temps are but during the winter the heat is set to kick in at 67F so I would guess it would be in the 65-70F range.

My 2500K is at 5Ghz stable and never get any higher temperatures of 67 degrees Celsius on full load. I've once taken it all the way to 5.6Ghz but don't want to fry my CPU due to the High voltage required and isn't really a daily drive.

I keep my PC inside a cupboard with built in air conditioning which is around 12-14 degrees Celsius inside there (sounds strange heh!!).

The good thing about aircons is that they blow cool air and the fans blow them in rather than freezing up your motherboard unlike refrigerators. you can control it via a remote control unlike refrigerators. My Corsair H100 takes huge advantage of this due to the cool air released from the aircon which is around 9-13c which is then directly used to cool the liquid in the H100 in a proper manner to then cool the CPU.

Anything lower than 5c would freeze your MOBO and HDD not make it function properl

PS without any aircraft I'm able to get 110-116 FPS but as I've before I get 96-102FPS on cruise

Another with wild claims that defies every single benchmark out there. Awesome.

I haven't seen any benchmarks of FSX on 5.6Ghz or even 5ghz.

Oh boy, Randy, sometimes it help to just use the "ignore" section of the brain, because frankly some people have the most extra-ordinary machines set-ups..!

edit

Oops sorry I totally forgot, I also get those fps, but my fsx settings is set at 1/2 and a few at 3/4..!

I think all the posters in this thread should fly using Word Not Allowed's extreme FSX load profile and then report back. I am not sure how else you can properly compare FSX performance. By the way, I have an i2500K overclocked at 4.9 Ghz. NGX, with overcast clouds, stock airport, REX clouds, AS2012 and what I would call a normal high end custom settings (water 2X Med, Autogen 1 notch below max, DX10) I will get anywhere from 18 to 30 FPS on the ground in the VC. 30 in the air. Frames locked at 30 (1/2 refresh rate setting). I think this is reasonable performance given my setup.....and its very smooth, no stutters or microstutters. Unless you look at the FPS counter, you don't notice anything.

That's pretty normal Mark.

Strange,, Run my 3770K @5.3 24/7 with -37C it works :Hypnotized:

I haven't seen any benchmarks of FSX on 5.6Ghz or even 5ghz.

I done it atleast100 times up to @5.4 with the 2700k and 3770K , do some ivestigations before fooling around

Finally some realistic figures. I think what people fail to mention is that those insanely high FPS they get is during flight, not on the ground with addon airports from aerosoft and the like.

Real world CPL holder.

When temperature got down to 3 celsius my HDD stopped reading which is why I wouldn't go anywhere near 5 celsius.

I have it locket at 30 1/2 refresh rate, but the system is capable to do +56fps in Fsmark11 by the book

24/7
