December 9, 201213 yr Never has a hobby brought together such a collection of avid pilots, computer engineers, and just plain 'regular' folks who don't know much about either topic, and caused such a huge variance in performance, even against systems that are similar in terms of hardware and software! The search for "The Holy Grail" of buttery smooth FSX performance, razor-sharp ground images from any altitude, shimmer-free images day or night, good looking views in any weather, and of course the added eye candy of AI aircraft, upgraded airports, cities, and even the overall countryside has spawned any number of cottage industries, and an equal or greater number of migraine headaches. I built my own FSX box, and it has been well over a year of various stages of joy, anguish, consternation, hope, and the entire gamut of human emotions. My 'day job' was negatively affected by the huge number of hours I spent grappling with everything from artifacts to hard system lockups requiring a full power disconnect, corrupted hard drives, failed backup images, you name it, I've experienced it. I guess the whole thing boils down to your expectations - and what you can achieve from our simulation experience on any given day during any number of variable flight conditions. Many of us have an "idealized" concept of FSX being "As Real As it Gets". In my mind, this means that when you're watching your flight on your PC, it looks exactly the same as it does if you were watching a film shot from inside an actual commercial jet. That is my goal. Am I close to that? NO. Am I closer than I was when I first 'discovered' flight simulator X? YES. The thing to bear in mind about performance-tuning your system is as several have said here, try things and see what happens. AI artificial traffic, autos, boats, and so on all negatively impact performance. I have shut off my AI completely, and fly only with REAL WORLD traffic when I'm connected to VATSIM via Squawkbox. I don't use AUTOS or BOATS/SHIPS at all. One reason is the roads in FSX are somewhat suspect, you see cars making hard 90 degree turns, not gentle curving turns, but like a military marching band, they pivot hard and turn 90 degrees. The cars drive though each other, generally speaking the overpass/underpass thing doesn't work as in real life. What appeals to me is good looking scenery as I'm flying in on final and nearing the approach minimums. No jerking or stuttering AT ALL. Secondary goals are NO SHIMMERING of objects, and it would be just peachy if weather could update invisibly or nearly so. Realize too that the more complex the aircraft you fly, the greater the load you are placing on both the CPU and the graphics card. Solid State Drives are cheap enough that most can afford them, and I concur that a SSD is going to really improve your experience and cut the wait time while FSX is firing up. I read with some interest that XPlane10 is working hard towards their goal of 64-bit multi-platform Operating System (PC, MAC and LINUX), though it is very much in BETA as of today AFAIK. Microsoft dropped development of FSX in favor of "FLIGHT" and then dropped FLIGHT. Microsoft sold the underlying 32-bit source code (or at least the rights to that code) to Lockheed-Martin who released Prepar3d (Pronounced "Prepared"), still as of today, I am fairly certain that Prepa3d is also 32-bit software. Translation: Unlike "Newer" generation video games like Battlefield 3, Grand Theft Auto, Batman, and others, FSX is stuck in the quagmire of 'yesterday's' software and is NOT OPTIMIZED to take advantage of Direct X 11, nor the next-generation of hardware and GPUs. It's widely thought for example that SLI does not directly benefit FSX, whilst it generally DOES have a big impact on frames rates in some of the 'newer' video games I mentioned here (and others). So until Santa Claus does a fly-by of our homes and drops the 64-bit version of FSX and/or XPlane10, we are stuck in the shifting sands of tweaking, debugging, and playing IT support engineer. Many of the members here on AVSIM are very generous with their knowledge, expertise and advice, and some have gone to the trouble of writing detailed 'recommendations' that worked well for them. I can chime in agreement about CLEANING YOUR PC, and the threat caused by DUST/DIRT buildup across cooling system components. I would say about every 6 months it's time for the can of air and blowing off the cooling fins, and other areas inside your PC case. The next level is removing the cooling unit from the cpu and cleaning off the old thermal paste, then applying a new thin coat of thermal paste and re-attaching your CPU Cooler. Downrating an overclocked system to a slower and more stable speed can help as well. Finally there are utilities that can free up system resources and give your FSX flights a boost, iobit makes RAZER GAME BOOSTER (available free at CNet's download.com), which has a double-edged advantage of closing unneeded windows services and changing your system power settings from power-saving (most people's default) to game playing (maximum performance) and then reverses itself afterwards. In my view, Game Booster was a great addon that gave an immediate benefit at no expense. If you're going to tweak your settings you want to learn and understand good backup and restore procedures. Inevitably you may try a tweak, or add a new bit of software, only to find a negative impact to your system. SYSTEM RESTORE is not 100% fool-proof. Restoring a full disc drive from a VALID system image file is GOLDEN. Not to mention the real possibility of virus attack or hard drive failure. Be sure your system BIOS is current with the latest updates, and that the drivers are installed to match your hardware. If you need help, AVSIM is a great resource, and there are other places across the web as well. Adjust your expectations and set your flight deck to reasonable levels as suggested here on this thread will go a long way toward improving your flight experiences, and eventually, you will probably want to not actually know your frames per second, but rather how it looks to YOU when you're in flight. Pulling gauges over to a second monitor puts more load on your system, running dual or triple monitors does the same thing, so you need to evaluate the upside of multi monitors versus the performance hit on your flight deck. Best of luck - it's a learning experience! R. Scott McDonald B738/L Information is anecdotal only-without guarantee & user assumes all risks of use thereof. Click here for my YouTube channel

December 9, 201213 yr Thank you Robert taught me something, I like your idea of redoing the thermal paste didnt think of that one good show buddy PS Robert's my brother name Rich Sennett
December 9, 201213 yr Hey Rich! Ya, I discovered the thermal paste from my older Dell XPS9000 unit, which after several years, I noticed began running with the system cooling fan on MAX all the time - something it NEVER did when it was new! After I cleaned it up and re-did the thermal paste, I went through my FSX box and did the same thing- i couldn't believe how dirty the Noctua DH-14 cooling fins were- they were chocked up with dirt/dust like you get after vacuuming your rug in your Dyson vacuum cleaner! It was so dirty (How dirty was it?) I actually rinsed the Noctua out under the tap in my sink! Then I stripped off the thermal paste and reapplied Arctic Silver 5. Tightening the cooler back down, and I'm golden for another 6 months. I was gratified to see that I could kick my overclock back up to 4.7ghz after having to lower it to 4.5 or so as someone else wrote in the thread here. DIRT is public enemy #1 of PC's, no question! I don't care how good your 'filters' are on your system case, dirt will find its way inside. In the old days with slower PCs, there was more margin for error, typically the PC wore out before the dirt got severe enough to negatively impact performance. Bleeding edge / Over-clocked / Gaming-Maxed PCs need regular cleaning, just like a race car. Otherwise they may CRASH. R. December 9, 201213 yr If you read my lengthy post the ssd on the new motherboard with 6gig of info thruput is probablly helping quite a bit - ssd is amazing in performance compared to the old 7200rpm drives this has to be part of the cure of a great running system. yah 680 doesnt hurt either not even breaking a sweat amazing. Great power supply is a huge factor too quality power supply is a must been buying no name power supplys never again, corsair all the way. SSDs didn't do anything for smoothing performance on my system, only cut down initial load times. I run Corsair Force GTs and 6 GB/s SATA controllers on an ASUS ROG series motherboard. As for smoothness I got out and fetched the latest Far Cry and Assasins Creed to see how other games ran on my PC. They ran butter smooth actually, so I still stand by my original statement that the glitches in FSX are impossible to get rid of. You can reduce them, but never get rid of them. Hey Rich! Yep cleaning is very important, and having proper temp sensors in your system will give you a head's up when things are beginning to be affected by dust or other problems. Just be careful folks when opening up the case. It doesn't take much static electricity to do some serious damage. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!

After interminable tweaking I still don't have FSX perfect - but it is much better than it used to be. I will buy those two games you mentioned, probably just so I can see what I -should- be getting in terms of gaming performance. I have high hopes for XPlane10 - at some point they will get it ironed out and when they release it to market in 64-bits, I think THEN we'll have something - a flight sim game that can use all 16GB of RAM in my system and put large portions of textures, mesh, vehicles and other scenery into memory which should make a huge difference in performance and smoothness - but only time will tell. I have to say their rendition of freeways in XPLANE makes me want to throw rocks at my FSX platform. WAY better vehicles and roadways. The rest of their scenery is not up to FSX in terms of RW versus what they called "Plausible Reality". So for overall flight I'm still a FSX person, not to mention I don't think my VRinsight stuff would work in XPlane10 but I'm not sure about that? Being careful about Static Electricity is of course a good reminder - and while we're on the subject- UNPLUGGING the A/C power to your system anytime you're inside the case is always a great safety tip as well. Seems obvious, but you'd be surprised... R. Scott McDonald B738/L Information is anecdotal only-without guarantee & user assumes all risks of use thereof. Click here for my YouTube channel

December 9, 201213 yr I have the PMDG 737, Ground Environment X Europe and Real Environment Extreme installed Before this thread gets too full of "do this / do that" of all sorts, why don't you show us some screen-shots of your FSX configuration "in-game" and possibly even your fsx.CFG file? Lets start with the basics before we all go off on different paths guessing what the problem is. As I say to people every day, "Need more info please" So, lets ask you a few questions, simple stuff, to establish more about what your setup is, so as not to derail this thread into endless differentiating advice of all kinds... 1. Do you have anything else installed for FSX at all? 2. What temps is your PC running at when both idle and running FSX? 3. Can you show us screen-shots of your FSX configuration screens? 4. Can you fill in your profile info with as much info about your PC and sim as possible? Lets start with that lot, and work from there huh guys, before we all start throwing advice at him that may not even be relevant... Especially when you start telling him where to install FSX, and cleaning his CPU etc etc... Lets work out what he is doing first, because he hasn't provided anywhere near enough info to diagnose the problem yet  I have exactly the same add-ons he does, over-clocked, water-cooled system @ 4.8GHz, and have zero problems so far, everything installed in default location, so lets see what he is doing first, before we make this thread confusing? December 13, 201213 yr Author Hi guys. Thankyou to you all for all your comments and tips, makes for interesting reading. Ok so here's where I'm at with things. My PC is an i7 2600k overclocked to 4.5ghz, Nvidia GTX580, water cooled. I'm running Windows 7 64. I have FSX installed with Acceleration, PMDG 737 NGX, Ground Environment X Europe, Ultimate Terrain X and REX. I just think that I have an underlying issue somewhere within the cfg or Nvidia Inspector because of the following.... a) Micro stutters B) Shimmering textures c) Jumping plane when on the ground! I have here my CFG and Inspector settings for you to see... // This file was tweaked on Oct 23, 2011 at 16:31 GMT using Bojote's automated FSX Tweaking & Tuning Service // Your 'original' fsx.cfg file so many videos on Youtube etc of people running lesser systems than mine with much better results. One thing that I do not have is a SSD but after reading so many posts about this I think the jury is still out as to whether this will make any difference to anything but loading times. Thanks again guys, I'm sure there'll be things I've missed so please ask me any questions! Jonny.

It just takes an NVidia driver update to make certain tweaks mess up your system. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
