December 24, 201213 yr Perhaps a corrupt file....Try using Auslogic's fee Defragger. When you install it will overwrite the default. It is also a little quicker. http://www.auslogics...re/disk-defrag/ Arnie....if it ain't broke, don't fix it...
December 27, 201213 yr If you have a corrupt file, the defrag will usually not start up. Check your Windows 7 for corrupted files. Click on the Start button, type Run in the Search box then look up in the Menu and select Run. In the Run box, type sfc \scannow. It will look for corrupted files and repair them automatically if any are found. Run Windows 7 in Safe Mode first. Try running the defragger. If it runs, click on stop and restart Windows in normal mode. Once restarted, try running the defragger. Best regards, Jim Jim Young | AVSIM Online! - Simming's Premier Resource! December 27, 201213 yr Jim, the sfc utility only looks for changes in Windows system files--for defragging it's more important to run the chkdsk utility beforehand to check the entire file system for errors (i.e. bad indices, orphaned files, corrupted security descriptors etc) From a command window enter chkdsk x: /f where x is the drive letter. If it's your system disk, answer yes when it asks if you want to run the check on the next startup, and then reboot. December 30, 201213 yr when I try to run Win 7 64 bit defrag, nothing happens. It doesn't load. Any hints what might be wrong? If you went through NickN's Win7 setup guide then you turned Win7 defrag off.
January 7, 201313 yr Just a quick note - "sfc" is the command, and "scannow" is denoted as a parameter by the forward slash "/", as in sfc /scannow. January 9, 201313 yr Just as a side question; just in case - are you using a SSD? If so steer clear of that defrag button!!! (however, having an SSD shouldn't prevent you being able to defrag, it's just not a good idea!) James W
