Terrain Mesh Recommendation?

Featured Replies

Out of interest does FSGlobal state what data they have used. You can make a global 1m mesh, but if it comes from 19m data then the only difference from the 19m version would be the vast amount of extra disk space you need....

It's not only about source data, but how that data has been processed and compressed. Don't read the market babble. The numbers doesn't count, it's how it looks in FSX and how it affects performance that matter! Too bad there is no review out there comparing the products.

Lol - do you sell loans for a living? Heard that before - the "APR" doesn't mean anything.... yeah right.

The numbers are pretty important, since they give you an idea of the "potential" quality. Unfortunately, the ultimate check of quality vs performance costs you $....

I had FSGlobal 2008. It had severe issues around Florence and in other places. Around Florence, I had table mountains that do not belong there. Big ones.

Then I switched to FSGenesis. Less problems, but yes, there are some as well. For example, around Belgrade their Balcan mesh displays ripples that should not be there. Or some strange spikes in the alps.

Best overall solution I have found is FSGenesis Global mesh combined with their US mesh. It's not that detailed, but too detailed meshes have problems with rivers and lakes. Abacus has the DVD "World Landscapea"; which is basically the combination of those two FSGenesis meshes. This is the one I recommend.

If its the case that FSGenesis like UTX forces you to install in FSX folder, then Fsgenesis is no option for me .

FSGenesis does not force you to install in FSX directory. You can put it where you want. I think the installer gives you the option but if not there, just download the zip and extract them where you want and at to scenery library.

Wow. Great info so far. Thank you very much! The user opinions mean more to me than anything I can read because its always best to hear what folks who are actually using it say. Even better if someone happened to have used both.

My understanding is that FSGlobal Ultimate has improved considerably from FSGlobal 2008. I read a review here on Avsim of FSGlobal Ultimate, and that review included a "interview" with the creator who explained alot of stuff. One of those things he explained was the way the numbers can be "fudged" for the resolution data. You might want to check that out. Its interesting, if nothing else.

However, what I'd really like to find is a review comparing FSGlobal Ultimate with FSGenesis.

If you gona buy fsGlobal Ultimate, make sure to agreee shipping details if it matters to you what date time Cd package arrives. Mine was 2 weeks late, and was not sent by recorded mail. 130 Euro package.

Global Ultimate is very nice, but confirm shipping details with vendor, if you dont want to be left checking mail box daily.

And very important request recorded delivery, else they could accuse you as he did me of receiving the goods, and saying otherwise. In my cases package arrived 2 weeks late, plus acussed of lying about package.

To avoid this nonsensical, send them an email requesting proper delivery method before paying, better yet purchase from SimMArket or etc a more reputable bigger operation that has proper mail delivery methods suited to valuable international post.

Basically you cant track the package of 130 Euro sent internationally and that is wrong. Try buy from some big vendor where you can set postal options, rather than buying from pilot software team direct.

For a total of $69 paid in chunks when sales have been held, I have world coverage at the highest available resolutions offered by FS Genesis. Not sure why anyone would be keen to pay almost 3 times that for a similar product... Not knocking FS Global as I haven't tried it, just saying FS Genesis is really good for the price. 70% off Europe Nextmap products right now, free access to the back catalog which includes global coverage.

Regardless of price...

I'm looking for the candidate that will have less anomalies (airfields on pillars and in basins), and good support and service.

Also important to me is ease of install and the ability to easily activate or deactivate it. Less complicated, well documented, and easy to activate/deactivate in my FSX install is a good thing.

Price is a secondary to these issues to me. Even if its an absolutely terrific deal I'm looking for something that I can set and forget. Whichever has the least probability of running into pillars all over is important to me. If it comes with a tool to fix it and I only need to use that tool once in a blue moon, then that is fine. But if I'm running into alot of airports not being displayed properly and having to spend an inordinate amount of time fixing things...then that is no good.

I'm a novice FSX user, so I'm not too sure what the best route is when it comes to the ability to activate/deactivate the terrain mesh at will...but I'm guessing it has something to do with the Scenery options in FSX.

So, in a nutshell. If a product costs $69 more but it more likely to meet my criteria...then that is ok. If it costs $69 more and its less likely to meet my criteria and is going to give me headaches, then I'd rather steer clear of that.

I paid $69 for what I've purchased thus far, most of it purchased at a higher rate during a previous sale. This includes high LOD mesh for the U.S. & Europe in addition to higher than default mesh for the rest of the world. It is actually possible to pay less than that if you were to buy all of their mesh now, and get higher quality for other parts of the world (like the rest of North America). I just added it up and with the current sale you can buy everything they make right now including high LOD mesh for all regions they cover for about $77.

FS Global charges $158 for their product at current exchange rates.

I guess my point is that I have yet to see any demonstrable difference between the two products. We can talk technical details until we're blue in the face but if you can't see any differences in action, it's all for naught. Their own product screenshots don't offer a comparison to the competition, only to their previous product and FSX default. I see no difference between the current and previous versions at that, and sometimes no discernable difference compared to FSX default in the shots they've provided (see Kilimanjaro, for example). I'm not attacking FS Global or telling anyone not to buy it, just advising anyone interested to do a comparison and possibly save some money instead.

FsGlobal Ultimate Resolution is the best, if you got high end PC to display 1m resolution , then its the only option. FsGenesis resolution not as much.

Install setup etc is simple, set and forget.

The only issue is many of the smaller out of the way airports in Ultimate have elevation issues.

Never been bothered about it enough to fix the issue, but the depression ones are the worst cause you pretty much cant land. Not seen one of the deppression type in Fs Global ultimate so far.

If you looking for which looks best FsGlobal Ultimate is the only choice, lots of elevated airports though. But it improves the graphics globally enough to overlook the elevated airports.

Just curious, have you tried FSGenesis too and compared? Or, what are you basing that on? I'm not being critical. I'm only asking because I currently have FSGenesis. But, if FSGlobal Ultimate is really better than FSGenesis, I'd consider buying it and replacing FSGenesis. Have you tried it in Europe compared to the FSGenesis NextMap data?

Just want to correct something I mentioned earlier... FSG Ultimate Europe-Africa covers as far west as Iceland, not Greenland as I had mentioned earlier. Sorry for the confusion.

I'm currently installing FS Global Ultimate Europe.. Do you want to compare screenshots? (Not trying to sound like an internet tough guy..) Set up a short flight with location, altitude and direction of compared scenery and I'll try to get the same shots you get.. This way people can see and compare themselves which is better..

Hmmm, that would be interesting. Just have to think of a good place that would really show off the differences...somewhere in the Alps I would imagine. Maybe LSGG? I think up in Norway would be good too. I'm relatively new to flying around in Europe though so I'd be open to suggestions and ideas from people much more familiar with this great continent. Where are some good places to really compare these two products? Maybe even a list of 5 places or so to compare?

honestly, I don't normally fly through Europe.. We could also do it from the end of a runway or on the ramp facing a certain direction as well.. that way we're not confused and taking shots of different scenery...

Right off the top of my head I could suggest Lukla. (EDIT: Wrong region.. Sorry)
