Terrain Mesh Recommendation?

Featured Replies

Currently my FSX is setup with UTX, GEX, & REX/OpusFSX....

I'm wondering what your thoughts are on Terrain Mesh for elevation data? Would you recommend Terrain Mesh to add to my list of add-ons as well? If so...what type would you recommend?

I've been reading about FSGlobal Ultimate and FSGenesis and I'm on the fence whether I should get Terrain Mesh or not, and if so...which one.

Some of the stuff I read makes it sound like its very very important. Other stuff I read makes it sound like its more trouble than its worth and it can really screw up your airports and some of the features.

Alot of the threads here I was reading were many months, or even more than a year old so I thought I'd get your opinions and advice.

It is certainly important for me, although it does rather depend where you fly, if you spend all your time flying around Holland / Belgium then I wouldn't bother. If you prefer the more rugged area's then it is a must. I have used FSGenesis for years and it is very good - would certainly recommend it. Not seen FSGlobal so I can't comment on that.. ..

Same thing for me...I have not used/seen FSGlobal, but do have FSGenesis and it is good. Definitely recommend it. They have a 70% off sale going on right now too. Check them out at http://www.fsgenesis.com

Any of you guys using FSGenesis United Kingdom?

If so, any noticable differences that you spotted or errors you could tell were corrected?

I am currently using the FsGLobal Ultimate bundle, which basically covers the world. And WOW. enough said.

Its a shame i have not used FsGenesis to compare.

Used to use FsGloabal 2010, i suspect that could be around same resolution as FsGenesis. Then the Global team released FsGlobal Ultimate which is highest resolution.

Its got elevation issues at many remote airport, but it does not really bother me when i see those mountains look good.

They provide tool to fix elevation issues, but i never used it. The tool comes with the installation of the scenery.

One Gotcha to watch out for with higher resolution high candy is, can your PC handle it.

Currently at 4.6 Ghz and 30 fps locked, but wiount be able to see global ultimate 1m or so resolution with PMDG 747 eating away at all the FPS. I am only able to max out the scenery i purchased when using low fps simple plane.

Sorry mate, I was referring to if you had noticed anything that this software had corrected, rather than any issues with the software itself?

I have problems with my local airport as I live in a hilly area, so wondered if this software is the type of software that fixes bugs like this?

Ah, ok. Sorry. I really wouldn't know then. I have never flown around Europe without FSGenesis. So, I don't know what it looked like before nor do I know the smaller airports there well enough to say if something was fixed or not.

ohhh, ok, in that case, what made you buy it if you didn't know what it was like without it?

Is it eye candy stuff or making terrain more accurately placed?

FSGenesis terrain mesh deals with the elevation resolution or how many samples of an areas elevation there are within a given area. So, it greatly enhances the differences in elevation you will see in a particular area, especially when flying in mountainous areas. If you're flying in the Netherlands or the central Plain states in the US for instance, you probably won't notice too much of a difference. However, fly over the Alps or the Rockies and it adds a ton of detail to the mountains. Mountains look like mountains, not gently rolling hills like in the default resolution that comes with FSX(76m I believe). It's making the terrain elevation more accurate and more real looking. So it doesn't deal with the placement or location of airports, cities, forests, etc. It just deals with elevation data.

Thanks. Well, I think I've decided that I'd like to pick up Terrain Mesh. Now the only question is whether to go with FSGlobal Ultimate or FSGenesis.

I've read good things about both. However, how true this actually is I don't know because I'm only repeating what I've read....but I've read that FSGlobal Ultimate is a good choice and gets good reviews but also seems to have more issues. However, the do include that tool for you to fix them. On the flipside, I've also read that FSGenesis actually is a bit more mature of a product and they've gone to the trouble to fix alot of the issues. However, they don't provide a means for you to fix any issues you encounter and are not fixing them with the frequency that they once were.

So any information that anyone has regarding FSGlobal Ultimate vs. FSGenesis would be helpful.

I've had FSGenesis for years and got in on the Galaxy-class membership early on. So, I've loaded everything on their web site.

It takes quite a while to reinstall everything but I like to look out the windows as I fly.

I don't know about the FSGlobal Ultimate package but I'd guess they both came from the same base data and are honed and repackaged by each developer.

System:   AMD FX-9370 4.4GHz, 16G RAM, Asus Crosshair V Formula Z, MSI 1080ti STRIXI, Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit, Coolermaster Cosmos case, 1200W PSU, 1-256G Intel SSD, 4-512G Samsung 840 Pro SSDs, 1-1Tb Samsung 840 Pro SS, 6Tb+ external USB disk space, Prepar3D V4.3, All MegaSceneryEarth, REX OD, All ORBX

FSGenesis has 70% off at the moment

The complete Nextmap Europe 10m product normally costs $69, with 70% off that price is a bargain

Here's my 2 cents..

Per their website, FSGenesis offers terrain resolutions between 10M (North America and Europe), 76M (World), and 19M (World ASTER).

Per the boxes sitting beside me, FS Global Ultimate offers 2M (The Americas) and 5M (Europe/Africa and Asia-Oceana).

Resolution with FS Global Ultimate is much more detailed and a much better choice in my opinion. On top of this, FSG Ultimate products includes a disk to repair airports whose altitudes are incorrect (and therefore are in pits or in towers).
