August 12, 200421 yr But there are lots of comparisons. The baker was too greedy to remove maggot infested pies and counted on the consumer not to complain. The baker was too greedy to spend the extra money for helpers that could check the quality of the pies. The baker was too greedy to remove old pies from the inventory. I checked and it takes 24 or more hours for the flies to hatch so I can assume that my
August 12, 200421 yr Commercial Member I'm afraid he's not. I wonder how many developers he knows personally? Oh that's right, no need, we know they are all greedy anyway. :-outta Fermin Fernandez FSWidgets Developer Melbourne, Australia (UTC+10)

August 12, 200421 yr >>>All the people who so bitterly complain about payware should start to put their money where their mouth is: Learn visual basic, C++, GMax, PSP or Photoshop and whatever else they need, get down to some serious coding for a few hundred (or thousand)hours, and then give it away to anyone who wants it!I think this suggestion is a little too easy for these guys. They probably would balk at the idea of needing to buy a 'Learn VisualC in 24 Hours' manual. Make them forgo their salaries from their regular day jobs and see how it feels like... :)Somehow or rather, people seem to forget that freeware is undeserved gifts... there's nothing wrong with developers charging for these gifts later.
August 12, 200421 yr Well, that's quite an offer I admit. But here's something you wrote in the other thread, which has been closed: "This is not your average 2 nights of work water texture upgrade for FS." Well, this is the exact kind of attitude of Peter Wilding himself. That's why I'm not using his files, although I had expressed my respect for his texture work to him once, and - rather mildly - critisized this exact attitude, conveyed by his documentation. I only got short but rude replies from him, no conversation went on at all. I might have been overly sensitive, but that's nothing you couldn't argue sensibly about, one friendly email would have been enough. Most freeware authors spend much if not most of their free time, over a period of weeks or even months (more than "two nights"), to create such upgrades, the main difference is - they neither have the money nor man power for all the additional marketing gags. And when freeware authors disrespect other freeware authors, I too lose my respect for them. More so when they go payware. I really don't see the great difference between this package, which might have a nice installation routine, and some of the freeware stuff. Anyway, I'm sure it really isn't bad at all - and if people are willing to spend the money for an easy to use package, that's fine of course. And I truly respect the offer. But I for one just don't need it. -Daniel
August 12, 200421 yr >I'm afraid he's not. Know me that well do you? Then seeing that you do, then what's the name of my wife and kids? >>I wonder how many developers he knows personally? Oh that's>right, no need, we know they are all greedy anyway. >>:-outta Knowing me as well as you do it must have slipped your mind that I have been a software developer for over 25 years. I have owned my own software development business and that I have developed game add-ons and other PC related software. All freeware by the way. Where ever the "way" is. Of course that could be whey in which case some of us may very well know where the whey is. For the record I don't.I know lots of developers. Trish, George, Frank, John, John, Joe, Matt, Matt, Matt, Chris and Sharon just to name a few. I could continue to snip and snipe but we are starting to act like my kids so I'll take my own advice and "Knock it off!"Jon
August 12, 200421 yr I think Loose Cannon needs to re-set his/her alias to Agent Provocateur. There's a deliberate attempt being made to goad people in this forum into nasty reponses so that threads get locked, or diverted away from the topic at hand. Just look at his brief (very brief, where has he/she been until now with all that expertise?)posting history. Wonder if he's Peter Wilding?Probably best to ignore people who won't use their name, or declare their interests. Loose cannons go off half-cocked. No need for us to as well.Allcott
August 12, 200421 yr This is a rediculous discussion but I am going to put in a word on it because I cannot resist :)The original post here is the same as saying that the freeware A320 uploaded to AVSIM is BETTER than the PSS A320 available for purchase, even though the person posting doesn't even have the PSS A320 to compare- and probably not even the FREEWARE A320 to boot (although I have no way of knowing). Now come on people- let's discuss something relevant and not teeter on being accused of trolling. No one is holding a gun to our heads to buy these textures or anything for that matter. No even MS is making us buy FS...If there's any opinion to be had here- the buyer of this texture product will more than likely be very satisfied with it, as we have seen with many many Flight One products in the past. They aren't a company that releases junk just to make a buck. And if somehow, someway they are becoming that way (like said above), the marketplace will dictate that in time [and probably a very short time indeed]. In fact, if it sucked that bad I am sure someone around here would have spoke up by now...
August 12, 200421 yr Hearing peoples comments on the ease of use is good enough for me. I think I am going to buy this simply because of my limited simming time and anything that saves time tweaking, the more time I can spend flying. The time saved is worth the measly $15.00. That is just my thoughts.
August 12, 200421 yr "I meant, rather, that Bill Lyons created the intial reflective water texture innovation and that I felt Flight1 was commercially exploiting the 'concept' with their own textures based on the innovation of Bill Lyons' original water texture set."I saw your original post last night. Although you've since clarified it, I wanted to add my thoughts from the perspective of a freeware designer.I've written (and am updating) a tool called "Autoland". Before there was any such thing as an Autoland gauge, my tool was floating out there on the Internet for anyone to use--it first surfaced as an adventure, and later as a standalone program.Fast forward to today, and you have payware packages released with Autoland gauges and capability--most of which use the concept I demonstrated with Autoland.Do I feel exploited? Hardly. If someone can make money providing that functionality, so be it. Personally I'd never pay for a panel just to have Autoland capability--I like the way my program works better. But that's just personal taste.I noted in another thread that I wasn't too excited about this package, based on the screenshots shown. But there may be a market for some, and if someone wants to pay $15 for the package, by all means they should pay it. They couldn't be buying from a better outfit, IMHO. Flight1 for years has been providing value for what you get, or perhaps in the case of this package, convenience. I don't think they are out to exploit anyone or anything--the most they are doing is testing the waters. That's just my opinion....And also remember, whether freeware or payware, all good blessings come from the SDK's Microsoft puts out. So the originality comes from there--and for all any of us know, Flight1's project could have been in the works for a long time and perhaps tabled in favor of getting USA Roads and the Conquest out...-John
August 12, 200421 yr "Basically greed is the drive for any commercial endeavor. Thelevel of greed is the question not the absence of it."And here we have the fundamental dichotomy that exists in these arguments. The people who are so strongly against the idea of someone charging a fair price for a product and *gasp* possibly even making some small profit from its sale base their position on the belief that all payware developers are just a bunch of greedy, money grubbing capitalist swine. Its a perspective that is so utterly ludicrous that it borders on lunacy. If you want to limit yourself to freeware, limit yourself to freeware. But to claim that payware developers are just in it for the bucks totally ignores the fact that many of the absolute best add-ons that are available for MSFS are payware products.
August 12, 200421 yr Commercial Member FYI... I thought some would be interested in actually seeing some differences in default and new...http://www.flight1software.com/showcase/fswaterThis product has 220 new texture tiles for FS2004. We will not tell you that every texture is better than something you can find for free on the net. But that this is is an expandable all-in-one solution that offers quite a difference in what you see. The user interface is also expandable as a water manager, where you can easily manage different water sets, or new water sets, that you may want to import.I do not understand why this is such a heated topic. Peter I am sure worked very hard to get these 220 textures, and the interface was done by us. As always ANYONE that purchases from us can get their money back in 30 days if they do not like it. That is like having the full version as a demo.We respect the customer, and are placing this product out there at face value. You will know what you are getting in advance. We will expand on the Showcase pages because this there is a lot to show. Thanks, Steve Halpern Flight One Software
August 12, 200421 yr Frankly, I dont know what the big problem is. Let the free market decide. This group is usually astute in determining whats worth money and paying for it, usually with enthusiastic support if its good or roundly booing if not. Lets see what F1 has on offer, then let the people who actually bought the product say how good it is. I've never been disappointed in A Flight1 product except once, and when I mentioned that privately to them, my money was immediately refunded, no questions asked. I trust them as a vendor.I personally cant use this product because I prefer to leave all water textures turned off in order to speed my FPS and screen refresh rate on my old monitor. So, I'll watch with interest, but I seriously think the "greed" angle didnt play in here and F1/Mr. Wilding dont deserve that bashing.Eric AND
August 12, 200421 yr I was just wondering, does the program also adjust the wave height? I know some of the freeware stuff was not too kind to seaplanes landing, both in roughness and look.
