AVSIM Software and Hardware Guide for FSX

Recommended Posts

AVSIM is an enduring institution in the virtual aviation world providing a dependable and consistent platform to exchange knowledge and ideas. Over the years many of the leading flight simulation software and hardware gurus have graced these forums, gathering and honing their skills while dramatically increasing the quality of our hobby. Although a few names may stand out above others, the list of unique contributors is long and varied and we thank them one and all.

Hardware Forums Moderator Paul Johnson has put together the AVSIM Software and Hardware Guide for both the DX9 and DX10 versions of FSX. It incorporates the latest and best techniques and the tried and true standbys into detailed instructions on what to do and how to do it. Paul will periodically update the guide as needed on a regular basis as new information, equipment and methods evolve. We hope that you will benefit from the accumulated wealth of knowledge presented here.

Here it is: http://forum.avsim.net/fsx_guide.pdf

In order to use the embedded links within the guide you will need the latest Adobe Reader found here: http://www.adobe.com/products/reader.html

Just had a quick skim and learnt something new already about mips and alphas. That's an impressive amount of information crammed in but still easy to read.

I'll share this with my friends who are more casual users or FSX.

Will read the whole thing later but for now I say thanks!

OK, thanks!

Although not a newbie in this community I'm all new to DX10 and thought maybe I should finally give it a try but I can't even get FSX to start after enabling the DX10 Preview checkbox and thought maybe there's something about it in that guide but found lots of other places to look for DX10- related info as well so guess I'll have to do some reading...

I'm getting this error when trying to open it.  I'm logged in.  So I don't think it's that?  I don't know which error message is the correct error message - 404, permissions, what?  But, anyway, I'd like to see this doc somehow.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Thanks for your reports. I have tested this with FireFox, Internet Explorer 10 and Chrome. It works in Chrome and FireFox, not in IE. There is nothing on our side of the equation that I can detect that would prevent the download. I suspect that it has to do with *.PDF files and permissions on IE. I am still exploring, but if anyone can determine the IE fault, I would appreciate you posting it here.

Max,

When you get this thing hammered out, you'll be amazed at the difference.  When Steve finishes his DX10 all in one fixer tool, there will be no reason for anyone to use DX9 again.

Okay, back to the drawing board.

Tom, so I just got home from work and tried again...this time using Safari v6.0.5 from my macbook and still I get the same error. Is there some kind of account level permissions or something that I'm missing? Anyone else having problems accessing the file?

Max,

Solved my initial problem which was caused by some left over SweetFX files.

Did some initial testing and I'm impressed with how smooth FSX is running on DX10 but I do have some issues with pink airport buildings, white IVAO MTL aircraft as well as white Aerosoft AES jetways and marshaller I need to find a fix for if possible. If these issues can't be fixed I'm afraid I'll have to go back to using DX9 again.

I wonder if Addon Converter X would fix these issues...?

Steve's super duper DX10 fixer upper will get rid of all those issues and many more when it is released.  Very soon, I hope.

Can someone please post this guide somewhere else? Like in the file library?

@Tom, FYI I'm using Firefox 22.0 and I can download the guide fine.

Edit: just tried using Internet Explorer and that worked fine as well.

OK, that sounds great!

However while waiting maybe the best thing to do then at this moment is to go back to DX9 for now until it's available or do you think there's any chance Addon Converter X would also cure these issues?

I don't think so, however the two specific problems you mentioned will be repaired in Steve's program.  I'm just living with it till then.

Ok, thanks.

Then I'll just wait for Steve's program and use DX9 until then. Can't live with these issues myself in the meantime since I do all my flying online and seeing all online traffic in white pretty much spoils the fun flying online and also all my destination airports have AES which means also all jetways and marshallers will be in white.

I have once again reinspected all items that could have an impact on or prevent accessing the H&S Guide. I have now tested all browsers again, and IE10 works as well as FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari and Avant. They all work as advertised. So, I don't know what to suggest other than to reboot your computer after you have cleared your browser cache.

Done all that.  I've tried FF and IE on Win7, WinXP and Safari on MacOSX and no matter what, I get the same error message.  I don't get it either.  Maybe I should create a brand new account just so I can download this?  It doesn't make sense.  Is it possible to get it sent to me via a PM or something else?  I'm really sorry to be a pain here but I'd really like to see this.

Check your IE compatibility mode. Check it so that it is in compatibility mode.

Compatibility mode is on but I am now only able to use IE8. I only have access to a WinXP machine right now and I believe that's as high a version as I can go in that OS. Still, Safari and FF on my mac also fail. I can't believe I'm the only one on this site that has tried accessing this that has some tiny slight difference in ALL my browsers that is preventing me from downloading this file. Here's my latest attempt in FF with Firebug...This is from my mac.

Nope. That doesn't work either. I guess I'm just destined to not see this file. Thanks for all your help in trying but I give up. The only thing I may try some day is to create a brand new account and then go get it.
