February 1, 201313 yr I am an admitted graphics hound. I am always looking for whats happening at the forefront of technology, particularly video game graphics. I'm very interested in how quickly things are moving forwards there, and equally interested in how relatively stagnant this market has remained. I always wonder when and how we will begin moving forwards again, with an eye towards catching up a bit. In the meantime, here is a quick demo of what is becoming possible on the Playstation 3, which is still less powerful than most of the machines we are required to acquire to get FSX running acceptably, yet is still more advanced because the programming is up to date, taking advantage of the latest techniques to tell a story. This is an advancement of the graphical and motion (especially facial) capture techniques used in the 2009 Interactive Drama "Heavy Rain" from Sony/Quantic Dream. Enjoy! Warning for some quick language. Its a bit sad, so bring a hanky! We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically. February 1, 201313 yr Moderator Yes, the story was tending towards "very sad," but who knows what the future might bring? That is some amazing animation for such a primitive device! Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
February 1, 201313 yr Devon, I was prepared to delete this thread because of my assumption that it contained nudity and sexual connotations. It slightly irritated me that Bill commented favourably as he should know better than to sanction something like that! Sure glad I watched it first, for it is amazing for both it human like depiction visually, but also the story theme. Most warm and endearing! Kind regards,
February 1, 201313 yr Wow. That video really draws you in. It was a bit of a shock coming back to Avsim. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Yes, it was impressive as well as pretty thought provoking. Lets hope if the human race ever really does become capable of creating such devices, essentially a new life form, that we will be worthy of them. February 2, 201313 yr Moderator Yes, it was impressive as well as pretty thought provoking. Lets hope if the human race ever really does become capable of creating such devices, essentially a new life form, that we will be worthy of them. My all time favorite movie about AI was the charming movie "A.I. Artificial Intelligence." In the futuristic tale, a highly advanced robotic boy named David is 11 years old. He weighs 60 pounds. He is 4 feet, 6 inches tall. He has brown hair. His love is real. But he is not. He is a marvel of cybernetic progress who really only wants to be a real boy, loved by his mother and his father in that happy place called home. But David journeys out into the forests to find a way to become a real boy. A.I. is a complex, elusive, spellbinding, and visionary film that tutors us in the practice of ensouling things through the exercise of our love and imagination. The ending of the movie left me very sad, even though David was "content." My second favorite is "Millenium Bicentennial Man" with Robin Williams, followed closely by "D.A.R.Y.L." which explores the life of a young boy named Daryl who demonstrates profound talent in all areas of his life. From solving advanced mathematics to dominating difficult video games on his first try, Daryl continues to awe everyone in his town including his foster parents. Consequently, the government has a hidden interest in Daryl that threatens his very existence. Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
February 2, 201313 yr Author My all time favorite movie about AI was the charming movie "A.I. Artificial Intelligence." The ending of the movie left me very sad, even though David was "content." I can't do AI. Its one of those "So sad you wanna slit your wrists afterwards" movies, and I am not the only one who feels that way. After I purchased the dvd a few years later and showed it to my family, It was requested that I never show it again. Friends I have mentioned it to (who have seen it) immediately get unhappy faces and go "Jeez, I wanted to just go home and slit my wrists after seeing that, I was so bummed!" I remember in the theater, just like at the end of Saving Private Ryan, the audience seemed stunned for a moment, with almost nobody moving from their seats, and barely a sound except for a woman crying loudly somewhere behind me. I will never watch AI again. :lol: (I have never seen the others you mentioned) :blush: Going back to the demo, I remember when Playstation 3 debuted there was no Anti-aliasing, and it was very obvious in the first releases. There was also the problem that the system was apparently much, much harder to program for than the Xbox 360. Its interesting to see how far the system has come with the attention of dedicated programmers, market competition, and the passage of time. And of course the PC has come so much further....... February 2, 201313 yr One of the first ones has to be Short Circuit: Memorable quote: Five: Number 5 is alive. Five: No disassemble Number Five! Ben: With excitement like this, who is needing enemas? Five: Hey, laser lips, your mama was a snow blower. Ben: Did she stick her tongue down your throat? Five: Beautiful animal... canine... dog... mutt. Howard: What if it goes out and melts down a bus load of nuns? How would you like to write the headline on that one? Benjamin: Nun soup? Newton: Why did you disobey your program? Five: Program say to kill, to disassemble, to make dead. Number 5 cannot. Newton: Why "cannot"? Five: Is *wrong*! Newton Crosby, Ph.D not know this? Newton: Of course I know it's wrong to kill, but who told you? Five: *I* told me.

February 2, 201313 yr Moderator D.A.R.Y.L. - Data-Analysing Robot Youth Lifeform Barret Oliver played the part of "Daryl" who is actually a cyborg, having a human body but a computer-assisted brain. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D.A.R.Y.L. Oh, I meant to cite "Bicentennial Man" not "Millenium Man" (which was a short-lived made-for-TV series). See: http://en.wikipedia....nnial_Man_(film) I agree that my personal favorite is one of the saddest and most depressing stories ever... ...which oddly enough helps me combat the PLOMS (poor little old me's), when I consider just how much worse things could be! :blink: Fr. February 3, 201313 yr Author I usually hate movies that make me cry, they are usually so blatantly manipulative about accomplishing the feat........ I was defenseless against AI. February 3, 201313 yr Anyway, in 500 years, people will look at our era and think about it as some sort of middle age. Assuming civilisation survive as much (to be positive a bit!!!).
