OpusFSX worth it?

Featured Replies

Hello people,

I have quite a few add-ons right here, and I was looking at OpusFSX lately. I really want it because it looks great and I have read good things about it. But the main reason is that I'm now using the REX Weather Engine which sometimes causes big framerate drops and the weather isn't always accurate.

So, would anyone recommend OpusFSX, also regarding the framerate? How big is the framerate hit compared to most other weather add-ons?

It's simple......YES it's worth it.

Hi Arjen, I use it and love it. I haven't used the REX weather engine so can't compare, although I have REX OD and am impressed by their products and by their company in general. I like the simplicity of Opus, and while there is certainly a frame hit in heavy weather that is the nature of the beast. For me, Opus weather with REX textures is the way to go. And I believe they have a trial version. It's very simply to use so I would give it a go!

Absolutely! The best weather engine for FSX! And the guys at Opus offer the best and fastest support I've ever came across! This program is getting better and better, and with its additional camera effects, it is worth every cent.

Highly recommend it!!! The best weather engine out there IMO. As for frame rates, Opus itself doesn't have much of an effect that I can tell on FPS. Of course though, if you are flying in a really bad weather area with lots of layers of clouds, that will probably cause a hit. But, that's not really Opus' fault. It just injects the weather. It's FSX that then chokes on trying to display it at a good rate. Anyway, I love it. The best purchase for me since the NGX when it first came out!!!!

OpusFSX is very "lightweight" in terms of system resources. I use Zinertek cloud textures which are very reasonably priced. No need to use the highest resolution to get great results with Opus.

I use Opus and realtime weather for every flight.

Love the new button assignments to get local weather report on joystick button.

This is great news! What version are you using? Was this capability recently added? If so, looks like I will have to update my version.

version 2.90.3.

I did have to manually edit my fsx.cfg file to remove the older version under "[trusted]" in order for the newer version to work.

Back to the poster's original question: Is it worth it? Absolutely the best weather engine I have encountered. I many times have loaded OpusFSX and checked the visual representation of the weather. Then I have fired up what I will call Brand X weather machine (a very hightly rated and liked one) and compared the weather. Absloutely Opus is the best.

But that all said, I think it may be overpriced considering that you don't get cloud textures, and the camera part of the software is in my humble opinion not intuitive at all.

But would I rebuy opus again. Absolutely. Has transformed my flying experiences.

ps: Henry Street, thanks for the response.

Although I am a BIG fan of OpusFSX (I won't use another weather engine!) I have to say that if you only want it because of performance issues, then it won't help you. Yes, OpusFSX itself is light but the performance drop you may see when you use a weather engine, has (almost) nothing to do with the weather engine itself: it has everything to do with the amount of clouds shown in FSX. I do clearly notice a difference when OpusFSX shows no clouds at all or when there is a heavy overcast. So do NOT buy OpusFSX if all you want is better performance!

But... imho OpusFSX has other advantages... I specially like how incredible FAST it is! And how it loads entire 'weather scenes' for a large area at once. But again, buying OpusFSX for better peformance won't really help...

I hate you guys   . Now I'll have to buy OPUS next week :P

Hah, I just bought it! Glad I did. FPS hit with clouds and SGSS is relatively small. I estimate around 5% of my performance gets chopped off on the ground, Went from 37 to 35 FPS in my usual test scenario.

And in the air around 10-15% FPS loss. But only care about an FPS drop on the ground because in the air I always get at least 30 FPS anyway and mostly even 50.

In the beginning the program seemed a bit complicated, but reading the Getting Started Guide made things easy as hell. All you gotta do is set your FSX folder. Then for the next time just open FSX, then fire up Opus and weather will get loaded automatically, great! Clouds look great, no more tiny little clouds from REX, but now getting more big and fluffy clouds, looks much better. Also love the in flight METAR reports and winds aloft data!

If I could only have one add on for FSX it would be Opus!
