Clouds look great, no more tiny little clouds from REX, but now getting more big and fluffy clouds, looks much better.

Do you mean 'tiny little clouds' like these from REX Essentials + (textures, PLUS weather engine)?

The last screenshot was zoomed way out, as from w/in the airplane the clouds were vast and deep and nicely layers. REX Essentials + w/ their HD textures are nothing short of fabulous in depth & atmospherics. They truly resolved the issues w/ their prior product which was very troublesome in many ways. I was about to sign on to Opus but waited until the free upgrade. I only mention this not to dissuade Master Arjen but to let others know the representation in the comment really doesn't apply in any way unless maybe you have some funky textures. I read the comment during a flight from KSMF > KSAN and felt compelled to post. Impact-wise: well, I'm on a nearly 5 y/o Yorkfield machine at 3.72Ghz, and a nV GTX 280 at 16x AF, 8xS AA, 1920x1200, and autogen (and everything else except traffic) maxed, however in the lightweight Super MD80 Pro.

Why not get a weather engine that also includes weather textures? Seems, logical.

OPUS makes IFR flying much more enjoyable. Less of the "that's not right" kind of stuff. Perfect, no, but it really made a difference for me. I had no desire to spend more $$$ on a back end addon but it really turned out to be quite a nice addition. I do not use it's camera capabilities because I am quite happy with EZDOCK in that regard, but if you need one more excuse to get it, well, that's it.

OPUS is an incredible program and gets better all the time. Stephen and Cheryl's customer service is top notch and your flying experience using OPUS will knock your socks off. Some of the best money I've ever spent. Had a flight recently from Tokyo to the Maldives. Left Japan with barely a cloud in the sky and by the time I was 200-300 miles from touchdown, my plane was lit up like a Christmas tree with all the lightning. I could see the towering anvils in the distance and I thought about flying around them, but that would have made it too easy. The recent keyboard/joystick shortcuts are another great improvment. Want the weather conditions without having to use one of the menu bar shortcuts and a potential CTD? It's there now.

Oh my that sweet West Virginia sky!!!

That may seem logical but it isn't. For years and years weather engines and textures addons were always seperate programs. Active Sky, which has been the weather engine market leader for years, wa a weather only addon. For textures most people used FEX.

It wasn't until REX appeared on the scene that weather and textures were combined in one addon. However, the first REX weather engine sucked so most people kept on using AS together with FEX or now also REX textures (or textures combined from both addons).

Only last year (or so) textures were added to AS mainly because REX was improving their weather engine and was becoming a threat for AS. But nevertheless the AS weather engine can still be combined with REX and/or FEX textures or the other way around.

Also: using REX textures with the REX weather engine (or AS textures with the AS engine) doesn't mean you will have the best combination. Textures aren't optimized for a specific weather engine.

In the meantime OpusFSX appeared on the scene and it is considered by a lot of people as being the best weather engine out there. It doesn't have textures... but if you think it's the best, why limit yourself to a combined package like AS or REX...? A lot of people nowadays use OpusFSX for weather and REX (or FEX) for textures. And THAT is logical because those people think it's the BEST! ^_^

It is ONLY 'logical' to buy a combined package when you think about the cost: if you want quality, buying a combined addon (REX or AS2012) isn't logical at all.

I could not use FSX without Opus anymore.

Fact.

Absolutely agreed. OpusFSX is by far the best plugin for FSX. The REX engine is so slow in comparison, and I hated waiting ages for it to load.

Also, don't forget that OpusFSX isn't just a weather engine, it also has cameras and effects, etc like Ezdok. Since using OpusFSX I haven't fired up REX or Ezdok. And the updates come fast for it and support is excellent.

Absolutely worth it. Went from REX via AS2012 to OpusFsx. I used AS2012 and could not live without it. Unitl I heard of OpusFSX. Tried OpusFSX and said

goodbye to AS2012. I think OpusFSx is a tick more accurate / realistic then AS2012. OpusFSX setup is more userfriendly than the others. A few clicks and of you go flying. I am better not saying anything about REX Weather engine....... Personally I did not like it. REX textures are nice though. Many people using REX or AS2012 Textures with OpusFSX.

Guidos, how do you get winds aloft along your route? With AS2012 you get winds per waypoint, needed for long flights for fuelcalcs etc., how did you do this when changing over to Opus?

Without doubt, Opus is worth it. I use Rex textures with Opus Weather and as people have said it's great for the camera work, combined with Accufeel aircraft and camera bounce around all over the place during turbulence.

Accessing weather and wind reports is great too as I use the info in my FMC in say the Citation X (thanks Eaglesoft for that detail).

When I'm flying with Opus the winds seem to change based on location and broadly coincide with say the jetstream over Europe at the time, is that what you mean?

For a long time i never used real world weather even though i have REXE+ as it always made my frame rate suffer on my mid-spec system, so i was always using set weather through FSX. I have always used REX for textures. So along comes OPUS and after using the Demo for a month or so testing i bought it and now use it everytime i fly. It looks great, seems to be quite accurate and most importantly performs better for me than Rex weather did. Overall its a great program and still being improved on. Great support too. Opus & REX textures works well for me. I recommend it definetly : )

Kind Regards

Simon.

Active Sky had textures combined in the one interface as far back as AS 6.0, long before REX came along

The results all those years ago
