February 17, 201313 yr Here's one for the NW section of AK. Got to do a bit of navigating with this one. From my research, it's an 88 mile flight from Tin City LRRS to Lavrentiya Airport in Russia. I hope you've got your passport updated. Enjoy. Thank you. February 17, 201313 yr Author I'm kind of undecided on this one. This is a pretty long flight to end up in a blurry, white, nothingness. One thing in its' favor, however, is the aerocache location isn't hard to spot if you get close to it. I found that to collect it, you have to land. I flew very close and it didn't register. I had to do a couple of 180's , land, and taxi very close to get the registration. No problem landing though. Then the long flight back to Tin City. Parked back at Tin City. Thank you. February 17, 201313 yr Hi, Pardon my ignorance, but is an ADF available in Flight? The aerocache comments lead me to believe so. Jim F.
February 17, 201313 yr NDB`s are available, but no aircraft in Flight is equipped with ADF... Pretty boring area for an Aerocache.
February 17, 201313 yr I landed the RV-6, shut it down, and walked over to collect the cache. Lot's of room in Russia to stretch your legs! https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=A67912C653CB7AD!5573&authkey=!AEC9M2ps06HqffE
February 18, 201313 yr Very interesting place to visit but I sure would not want to live there. Nice detail on the chain link fence and barbed wire. Also hard to land a P-51 with zero reference points I would say. Steve
February 18, 201313 yr I visited Lavrentiya last July with the Red Tails P-51. This time, I took off from Wales in the RV-6 and first headed northwest to check out the Diomede Islands. It wasn't hard to tell where no-man's-land begins. Hey, what's that little bump out there, on the warm side of the ice line? Is it a sleeping whale? No, it's a big bump in the ocean. Maybe it's a speed bump, to slow down reckless boaters. That's Little Diomede Island in the background. Here's Little Diomede up close. It looks like melting ice cream. Big Diomede is just a a sort of smudge in the water. The big bump is visible off in the distance, just to the left of the sun's reflection in the water. And here's the cache. I was able to grab it from the air. - Peter - Peter C http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bob_and_Ray_Show
February 18, 201313 yr A flight to nowhere! I am all for community sponsored activities. It is good to get those of us who use Flight involved and I support the Aerocaches, particularly since they are so popular in spite of all the animosity at the beginning. But, I have been working on scenery projects for Filght Simulator for a long time. FS is not just a flight game for me, it is also a way to see parts of the world where I would never normally go but that I yearn to visit. It is important to see something when flying. Flight is the very first time in the history of Flight Simulator that the scenery is realistic enough that I get the feeling of really being in that place. Of course, I have no good way of knowing how Alaska or Hawai'i really look apart from Google Earth, but the scenery is sufficiently detailed and attractive, it gives an excellent sense of what I could imagine those places to be like, that I can suspend disbelief and enjoy flying. So, I just can't get enthusiastic about these Aerocaches to nowhere. There is nothing to see. There are plenty of flight games with deficient scenery, there are even IFR simulators with almost no scenery, and we could play those games if we didn't care about scenery. I understand and applaud MGS' support of this activity, but I wish there weren't so many Aerocaches outside the bounds of the scenery. There are still plenty of landmarks in the limited content: RCOs in Alaska, reefs and famous surf beaches in Hawai'i, seaplane bases, famous gold mines, and the locations of gold towns, places out of poems and literature, historic native sites in both areas, etc. There is plenty to visit where there is something to see. All that is needed is a little imagination and some research. Best regards. Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!
February 18, 201313 yr Author Very well said Luis. My feelings exactly. Thanks. Thank you. Rick $Silver Donor EAA 1317610 I7-7700K @ 4.5ghz, MSI Z270 Gaming MB, 32gb 3200, Geforce RTX2080 Super O/C, 28" Samsung 4k Monitor, Various SSD, HD, and peripherals
February 18, 201313 yr I'd agree that I'd like to see a little more variety in the AOTD choices. How many times does one need to go to the Waipio Valley? (Answer: As many times as there are waterfalls there, apparently.) More history-based caches would be good, and Luis' suggestion of places out of poems and literature is intriguing - where are Lake Labarge and the Dawson Trail from "The Cremation of Sam McGee?" But I don't mind trips into the Twilight Zone, on occasion, either, in the spirit of using every part of the pig but the squeal. This was a good navigation challenge, too, with no VOR to fall back on. - Peter - Peter C http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bob_and_Ray_Show
