Even though I sympathise from the FSX side with some of the claims made by XP I think the OP was not serious in his post and was looking for a thread just as it developed. Thats what I dont see the point in.

Yes, sometimes we need to "exorcise" our feelings when we get in deep frustration with something, and we tend to share it with our closest friends. As far as I'm concerned, I know I did that here more than just a few times :-(  Did I feel better after it? Yes... it helped decompressing... Was it right? No! I shouldn't have wasted mine and your time telling others they should not like this or that...

I for one am glad the thread wasn't locked. I have been flying FSX for a long time now, and it seemed that the sim had finally run out of room, since MS is no longer messing with it, and everyone is now running multi-core processors, 64 Gb of RAM and 64-bit systems. Poor little 32-bit FSX!

But I came looking for a reason to install X-Plane, because the main gimmick was that it was a 64-bit sim, and I'm running a system designed for 64-bit apps. XP sure does look sharp, and I guess that if I had money to spend, I'd buy it so I'd have both. But I have invested a lot of money and time into FSX - A2A aircraft, Coolsky MD-80, REX Essentials, MegaScenery Earth, ORBX, Radar Contact - and it all works very nicely. So to buy a sim just because it's a 64-bit system seems not to be a good enough excuse. There is a lack of aircraft, the scenery needs to catch up, and it might be a good idea to start trying to port over some of the more popular apps and aircraft from FSX.

I tried Prepar3D, too, and it may be the "next big thing" in flight sims, but it still lacks enough that it's not worth moving to. I actually removed it from my system, because at this time, it just doesn't compete with FSX on the level I fly.

Somewhere down the road, it might become the sim to fly (especially since FSX is dead to improvement), when the FSX add-on community starts supporting XP and the goodies start popping up. But for now, it looks like I'll stay put with FSX. I'm sure that those of you who like XP have their reasons, and that is why I came over here to look at the threads. This thread has answered most of my questions. Thanks to all of you for your input, and thanks for keeping the thread open.

Just wanted to say I've been flying XP10 for around a month now.  I'm getting more used to it as I go.  I like the x64 ability however a lot of the (small selection) addon planes still don't have the x64 support.  Like the first payware I bought, the Carenado A36.  It says 64bit compatible but really the Aspen PFD crashes XP because of some OOM situation with the map overaly.  So I have been flying x86 XP10 instead for the time being.

I'm just going to list a few pros and cons, from my noobie XP perspective:

Pros - Superb night lighting, good icing effects, air seems to move about the acft better than FSX (not always though), acft effect lighting very nice, once you get the right settings FPS are better than FSX for about the same amount of scenery.  And the cool aviation flashlight in HDR mode!!

Cons - Asinine click spots in the VC (and mouse clicking knobs is a nightmare unless the plane has the newer dual style), ultra twitchy stock flight models, poor landclass/autogen implementation (I guess XPers call it Land Use Data), turbulence/wind really bounces planes around (too much imho), stock wave heights too large for float planes (I still haven't found the setting for this), Few high quality addons (I'm referring to graphics mainly) as most addons look like they were built for FS98., no RXP GNS430W/530W VC integration (and forget about x64)... Finally stock scenery is non existent..  Yeah it's a big list of cons but I'm trying it and flying it anyway.

At the moment XP is my nighttime sim, and I use it for Pilot Edge online.  I also dab here and there around my home airport.  Like today, we've got this wonderful spring winter storm and the weather is at precision mins all day so I've been flying XP (and FSX), good times.

My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL |
| Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |

Quick and dirty - XP10 is still very much WIP but has much potential.

Compared to FSX/P3D (which are the only viable global simulators to which one can compare) x64 and lighting seem to be XP10's biggest plus points.

On the other side of the coin, it needs to play major big catch up (seasonal textures, ATC, AI (looking better) visibility at altitude, weather engine etc...).

I'm ready to move to a much-advanced flight sim, especially something that uses the machines we have today. I have a basic machine compared to most of you, but I still have 8 Gb of RAM and a quad-core CPU, and a nice GTX560 video card. It would be nice to have a sim that used all of that.

But FSX (I tried P3D, and even it hasn't "got there" yet) is the best thing on the market right now - there isn't anything you can't add - super-realistic aircraft (I love my Coolsky MD-80 Super Pro and my A2A P-51's and B377)), TrackIR and EZCA, weather and textures (I have REX Essentials w/Overdrive), ATC, AI traffic, ORBX airport scenery... The list goes on and on, and more vendors clock in every day. It's endless for a sim that is ancient history in computer terms.

I can't wait for more of them to sign on to the new technology and start programming for apps like X-Plane and P3D. If I could use what I have now in XP, I'd leave FSX in a heart-beat. But if 64-bit is the only carrot dangling in front of me right now, I'll probably stay with FSX. Keep it up, XP. You'll win us over if you keep building on your base. We're waiting in the wings for you to catch up.

With the begin of this month I forced myself to use X-Plane for all my flights for this month. I did this because I really tried to like it, XPX was a birthday gift by my wife, I can imagine how hard she worked to find out about it and ordered the "new simulator". Without being a gift, I would have given up on it much earlier.

IMHO opinion all the trouble starts by using both sims, at least for me. It forces me to compare, like and dislike things.

The first days were kind of hard. You know what I miss in X-Plane so I think I don't have to repeat it, lol.

After a few days and some nice flights I did not miss my ORBX scenery as much as before, other nice moments took the place of that scenery and I had fun. I ordered some more payware, the Dreamliner as a "light simulation" of a heavy aircraft, the "Gateway to Alaska" scenery and a nice C185 bush plane.

I found out how nice the choppers fly and how easy it is to create basic sceneries of airports that are not available with Overlay and World editor.

I got addicted again to the Pipers and the Citation Mustang by Jason Chandler and had hours of fun. I still know about the features of FSX and I still think it is superior in many aspects, but the memories faded away with every day I used XPX. I even doubled the RAM of my notebook to benefit from the 64bit technology.

The first change in mind was to stay away from FSX add ons for the future, today I feel I might never return to it. I will not erase it, it does not hurt having it on my HD.

I'd like to thank those forum members who shared their open minded thoughts, maybe you really helped me to like it.

I totally agree with you and like you said: it doesn't hurt to have fsx/p3d installed also to mix up the fun.
