San Francisco add-on scenery?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone...Is there a 3rd party San Francisco add-on scenery for FS9? I vagely remember one a while ago, or maybe its just senility setting in :-)Thanks,Mike T.

I have for example Megascenery USA2004 Volume 3 Northern California.

Aerosoft are supposed to be working on a San Francisco scenery similar to their New York scenery as well. Megascenery is not really suited for city sightseeing because of the low resolution of the source photos used (only 5m/pixel IRS images).

But does good city scenery exist and can they be used to enhance Megascenery even further? I have some airport addon which addsome buildings in the cities. But it's really no big point with just some isolated building on a city texture.

Fly Tampa is going to be making the San Francisco International airport (KSFO). It's listed on the upcoming projects page of the web site.

awesome

if you fly around the sf bay area (including monterey bay, sacromento, up to sonoma county) i recommend megascenery norcal. i have it and like it alot.

"But isn't the minimum resolution possible in FS9 only 4.8m/pixel anyway?"Yes, but just like Mesh scenery, source resolution of textures also matters. It's always better to downsample than to upsample (use high resolution source data, then reduce the resolution for the final product, if needed).Switzerland Professional was made from 2m/pixel source photos. This means that the photos were downsampled to 4.8m. This ensures that every pixel of the texture is fully utilized and as much detail as possible is preserved.Megascenery on the other hand uses upsampled textures (from 5m/pixel to 4.8m/pixel). This upsampling no doubt causes a slight quality loss, and the photos were not that good to begin with.Megascenery 4 Pacific NW will use "Megacity" technology - they're using more detailed source images for urban areas. It's still 4.8m inside FS9 but it looks much better than their previous sceneries (see shots at their site). It's just a shame that they can't use this high resolution data for the entire region - probably because that would be too expensive.

Ahh, Fly Tampa: I LOVE their scenery and the frame rates I get...extremely smooth. It is good news that they are looking into making SFO. Thanks for the info!Mike T.

Sure, here goes:Just kidding ;-) it was published in 93 by our old friend Bruce Artwick.--Machdiamond

I have a scenery package dl'd from avsim, sfvfr.zip. here's the copy from the read me file:"San Francisco Photo Real Scenery addon for MSFS2004By Matt [email protected] photograph based scenery for San Francisco peninsula, including part of Oakland. Note that this does not include night textures so really only useful if you want to do somedaytime VFR flying. Also, does not include any custom autogen.Install like any other scenery addon.Freeware, no restrictions on use, modification or distribution"I haven't checked to see if it is still in the library. If you cannot find it, I can send it to you, but it is 17.5 MB...no prob if you have broadband. Sherm

It's hard to judge from those tiny shots on the box but it doesn't look that bad at all especially considering it was for FS5...
