Gaaah, what sloppy reporting. Airbus is planning to give it's customers the option of having a 2 inch wider aisle seat and a 1 inch narrower middle and window seat. It is not doing this standard on all planes, and although it's likely that airlines will charge extra for the wider seat, that is speculation, not fact, and certainly beyond Airbus' control. I thought BBC was supposed to be a quality news source?

I Weigh 73Kg, my Fiance, she weighs 65Kg,

My Boss weighs 135Kg, Nearlly the weight of both of us put together,

If this helps those that are 'Very Low Centre Of Gravity' Challenged pay for what they actually weight,

And we combined get to fly for what that individual costs, I'm all for it,

I know this will not be popular in all departments though.

Depending on the aircraft and number of passengers and 'weight's',

it does of course possibly mean variable price tickets, unless it is a fixed cost per Kg.

I know on the route I normally fly, there are a lot of very generously built people,

for which even in business class, they personally weigh more than myself and my max.

luggage allowance put together,

Then why should us slim-lines pay for those that aren't?

This does raise many questions for the aviation business, and I am sure the human rights will sledge hammer their way through this one

as with every thing else.

Ah!  Those were the days.

Then why should us slim-lines pay for those that aren't?

And why should I have to squeeze into an even smaller window seat so that the more ample of girth can have a wider aisle seat?

This kind of issue is never going to affect me because I've made a decision never to fly commercial again. If nothing else, medical problems would sentence me to a perpetual batttle for access to lavatories.   (My last flight was five years ago. I'm not up for the cattle car experience again, nor do I want to pay for first class.)

I can drive 1,000 miles in a day without breaking speed limits.  This means Denver to Santa Monica, for example, in one long 20-hour day. I do Denver to NYC in 44 hours including a short motel stay enroute. I do coast-to-coast in 3.5 days including two nights in motels.

Overall I average 50 mph including pit stops and overnight motel stays, and I've crossed the continental divide in the dead of winter three times. Truckers do it regularly, I can do it, and so can you.

I love long distance driving, there are no waiting lines, I make my own schedules, and there's no DHS security to be passed -- at least not yet. (Unless you're within 100 miles of the southern border.)

Three bits of advice for others thinking about the same thing -- giving up flying -- ...

1 - Rent a car for the round trip. The rental prices were amazingly affordable five years ago.

2 - Eat only at truck stops.

3 - Shut down early before other folks do, choosing a motel in a smallish suburb of a big city.

Mike, why are you posting in HTML?

Mike, why are you posting in HTML?

I wasn't, Tom.  It was an editor screwup.  I hit update, it just sat there for a while, then I hit update again.  When the smoke cleared it was in html so I went back in and edited it to be straight up text.

Ahso. I see that. I was just here at the right time and place...

I just noticed that FanCon is in Wichita this year. That's only 450 miles from where I live, an easy nine-hour drive. If I start out at midnight I can be there by ten am CDT and will play it by ear after that.

I've never been to FanCon before. I'm very curious, and anyway I need an excuse to do some distance driving, which I haven't done in a few years. I've never been to Wichita either. I'll have to check a map but I think that I can take Route 50 east out of Pueblo and go through Dodge, another place I haven't been to.

Hm-m-m-m. I can hardly wait!

EDIT: Checking a map, since time will be of the essence I'd be better off taking I-70 east out of Denver to pick up I-135 south somewhere near Junction City, KS, which will take me down to Wichita. I can do the Route 50 sightseeing thing on the way home.

What you need is an oceangoing transatlantic car ferry. Surely some wealthy entrepreneurial Greek shipping magnate will start that service?

Discrimination based on weight. Or they can get creative and inclusive-sounding and call it "mass discrimination."

Huh?

European Court of human rights lobby,

they are capable of trashing any change that may involve fairness to others in the name of non-descrimination,

and then laying law suits on companies & individuals to make money.
