How to get started?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone , I am new to the simulation world , i have just purchased the microsoft flight simulator X gold edition and since i might be doing my b737 type rating later this year ( A commercial pilot license holder currently ) , i am going to purchase the PMDG 737 NGX soon. Since you guys are a pro in the simulation world i have a few questions and i would appreciate if you would take the time to reply.

The box has 3 cds , disc 1 and 2 for FSX and the 3rd one for acceleration expansion pack.

1. Should i just install the disc 1 and 2 and then download sp1 and sp2 from the microsoft website ?

2. Does pmdg 737 ngx require me to have sp1 and sp2 installed before i install pmdg?

3. What are the issues i MIGHT come across during pmdg installation?

P.S. I am going to purchase the BASE PACK 737 NGX 800-900 .

I use an XPS L502X , windows 7 home premium 64 bit , 4GB ram , i7 second gen processor , 2GB Nvidea GT540M , 500 GB HD

Thank you in advance.

That is a big question. Acceleration or SP1/SP2 separately. There are many that believe Acceleration's SP2 version is totally different. There are some aircraft that have been released that only work with Acceleration installed. If you plan on purchasing/installing any one of these, you will need Acceleration installed...

You will need to have Sp2 or Acceleration including SP2 prior to installing the NGX, as it is listed in the requirements on PMDG's site. You should not have any issues with installation (I am not sure if Service Packs, which are available for the NGX, are integrated into the current installers), but you might find the video card on your laptop a little on the weak side. You will need to optimize your settings. Check out the various FSX setup guides, particularly here... lots of informatioin on how best to configure FSX for your hardware...

First, Acceleration pack and SP1 + SP2 are are supposed to be the same, except few more default planes and misions with acceleration pack. So, you need to install only SP1 + SP2 or only Acceleration pack.

Acceleration pack has some problems in most of cases, i recommend SP1 + SP2, i don't think you are interested in default fsx planes and missions - so why to take a risk?

Now, answers to your questions:

1. Yes, if you don't want to install Acceleration pack

2. Yes, SP2 or Acceleration

3. No issues if you have FSX instaled in right way

For best performance, maybe you should consider one good PC(desktop) instead of laptop, i don't think you can enjoy NGX with that spec.

For best results:

 - CPU should be overclocked

 - good NVIDIA GPU

 - 8GB RAM

 - Windows 7 must be instaled and tuned well

 -  FSX must be instaled correct and tuned

This is not easy, but luckily - there are some guys who have made guides about this

I recommend Nick's N guide for Windows 7 instalation and tuning, and fsx(instalation only), and for Hardware guide and most important, FSX tuning guide - i recommend Word Not Allowed's guide.

Both can be find easy by google.

Nick's guide in simforums, and Word Not Allowed's guide in his fsx blog.

You can use fsx with laptop for sure, with important performance sliders to the left. But i'm not sure if you can use NGX

IMO:

- SP1 and SP2, no Xpack (they're all on those DVDs! EDIT: not sure about those SPs anymore ...)

- 6-8 GB of RAM

- take a look at PMDG's installation/uninstallation documents for FSX (BEFORE INSTALLING FSX!!!)

- take a look at the AVSIM hardware (and software) guide here on AVSIM (now or later)

Feel free to come back and ask some more ...

Err ... welcome, BTW

What happened to AVSIM

Well, I use acceleration and do not have any problems. SO there is option to install acceleration OR to install SP1 + SP2. It's your call.

First thing you should start FSX once before you install anything else. You should go in options and initially set video settings. Do not set all sliders to MAX, set resolution, do not enable DX10 (it requires additional tweaking), and keep visibility and traffic options at low settings (no more than 20%). You might want to turn off shadows and bloom effect as most resource demanding options.

Then, you should optimize your fsx.cfg file. There are several tutorial how to do that manually or simply use bojote automatic tool:

http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html

Install Nvidia Inspector and follow this topic how to set it for FSX.

Install FSUIPC freeware, or payware (better). It's like swiss knife for FSX.

Then, install 737NGX. After installation, read the introduction manual first, to get familiarized with software.

Use options or FSUIPC to set your controls.

U are good to go.

Next, you can play with graphic settings in order to fine tune your graphic and frame rate.

As you are RL pilot, you might appreciate virtual networks (VATSIM or IVAO) that provide ATC by real people (that ensure quality local procedures instead of generic default ATC procedures) and traffic by other members of virtual network.

You need to install SP1 and then either SP2 or Acceleration. I don't think Acceleration includes SP1. Even if it does it does no harm to install SP1 first. Just remember to run FSX between each update.

I would recommend choosing Acceleration as it includes enhanced engine modelling, useful for A2A sims, and other extras SP2 doesn't have.

And if you go for FSX + SP1 + SP2, make sure to launch FSX at least once, before installing the next pack. This will save you loads of trouble.

1. Install FSX. Launch FSX, and when fully loaded, exit FSX.

2. Install SP1. Launch FSX, and when fully loaded, exit FSX.

3. Install SP2.

For completeness' sake: make sure you don't install FSX in its default location (under C:\Program Files\...), but into a separate directory that's not part of the Program Files tree (such as C:\FSX). This will likewise spare you a lot of pain and suffering (since programs that want to store and change files in Program Files subdirectories need to be run as Administrator).

Wow !! You guys are brilliant , i never expected such quick responses , glad to know that people are out here to help. Really good forum , i am going to purchase PMDG in 3 days time , i shall give you the feedback.

After reading your response , i think i will go with installing the fsx first , run it and then install SP1 run it and then install SP2. I wont be going with the acceleration because flight sim aircraft's are no use to me , i just dont like the idea of GPS navigation.

Good to know that there is a virtual network for ATC , I shall seek help on that once i set up my whole simulator.

Thanks once again for the response. One last thing , is it possible to add you guys into my list ? If so , how to?

No idea with that list but you could PM anyone you want and provide a link to your new topic, so this person will be aware of it.

You can also include the nick in a post of yours so this person gets a heads-up automatically by the forum software.

As a sidenote:

We all can help quickly on those FSX installation questions, since most of us would need to reinstall FSX on a number of occasions, LOL!

Have fun around here; we appreciate your rw experience, as well!
