It can't be an invasion of privacy if people are voluntarily joining the site, and volunteering selected (i.e. to their own degree of comfort or willingness) information.  That's like saying the TV show Duck Dynasty is an invasion of the Robertson family privacy.  They allowed the show to be filmed, thus it's an invitation into the private life, and not an invasion of it.   Same goes for social media.  The ability for anyone to get my name, address, and other information simply because I'm a pilot?  That's more of an invasion of privacy, though I wouldn't really consider the information to be private.

If you don't like it, don't joint it.  That's fine.  I respect that.  Where that courtesy ends, however, is situations in which facts are undercut by emotional responses.  This isn't me defending Facebook; rather, it's me trying to stomp out the technophobic responses I keep hearing over and over.

Ever use those membership cards at Costco, Food Kitty (Lion), Safeway, REI, or anything of that sort?  Just a heads up: they're mining that data too.  Welcome to 2013.  A lot of life isn't about selling the product anymore.  Life is about selling the data that is generated by that product.

Why are so many of the killer apps in the app store free, I wonder...

This is not true.  The ability to see a page depends on its privacy level.  This is true for both personal and identity (corporate) pages.

Here's an example: https://www.facebook.com/TheLifeOfAPilot.  PMDG's page is another.  You do not need to be a member to see the content.

Give it a second to load and you'll be able to see everything since the page was created.

Haha - that made my morning, and in light of the thread, is now my Facebook status...

I have to admit, though, there have been a number of circumstances where I was in over my head and still pressed on like I knew what I was talking about.  One in particular, Robert stepped in and somehow managed to politely say "you have no idea what you're talking about."  Unfortunately (fortunately?), I can't find the post/thread.  There are definitely others that I know still exist, like my unfortunate attempt to prove Kevin H wrong about flight simulator certification requirements (turns out, he worked doing that at one point).

Not to get too political and go too off topic, but maybe you slept through all of this:

I don't think people have an issue handing over information to Facebook and other social media. But it's other parties getting involved I believe @ was referring to.

That would be an invasion of privacy by the government.  I understand what you're getting at, though.

Kyle's post is still correct, nobody is forcing you to join Facebook, i haven't joined, so the NSA cannot mine my data, it's not there.  Now they can look at my emails (gmail), but again that's my choice.  Is it right, nope, it's very wrong; but the choice (at the moment) is still yours.
