AI Aircraft SID and STAR Controller

Featured Replies

Anthony, when AISIDSTAR starts, are you seeing the ICAO you're at (or near) appear in the list of ICAO(s) that are being monitored?  If not, that means the program hasn't read any SID or STAR files for that ICAO, so there is nothing to monitor.  Double check your paths in the .ini file, where you have to point the program to a particular directory you want to load.

The Monitor says, its a Holding because lost of serperation conflict with Aircraft  ID=1

Scrollig back in the Terminal Window and i couldn´t belive it:  The AI with the "ID 1" IS Condor 1234! It "saw himself"...

What you mean here, aircraft ID?  Are you sure you were looking at something else instead?  The conflict message gives:  airline, flight number, and atc id.

I tried hard to find it, finally i located it in the area between VALSU and NIKOG, (not at the picture anymore), thats about 10-12 nM!
I don't know how many times I have to repeat this, but AI separation is based on predicted separation at landing.  Read the manual too.  It should be obvious why this must be the case.  Try writing a separation utility that just monitors how close AI are to each other in the present, then watch what happens when they come together on final "in the present" and you have to separate them 5 miles from touchdown.

In the meantime Air Malta is comming close from the right, 58kts fast.
Rather than ranting about the speed variations, it might be easier to turn them off (or lessen them).   Ya think?  Add AIFinalApproachSlowDownScalar = 1 and  AITrafficSpeedAdjust = 1 to the .ini.  Where did I come up with that.....the readme.

Lufthansa1111  is comming from south, passing BIKMU and get RONAD as next WP. In the meantime Air Malta is comming close from the right, 58kts fast. From behind in his trails a Eurowings with 240 kts. They are all joining together
Like I've said too many times, separation is based on predicted landing separation.

Right over DL530 the AI slow down to 58kts and turns outright like a heli.
The fast AI turns occur when the final vectoring algorithm is being used.  If you want the standard rate FSX turns during final, that's your choice (AIFinalApproachAutoRecord = 0 and AIFinalApproachUseFile = 0), but FSX finals don't do the KDCA river visual approach.  My program does.

But before i got lucky i saw first a assigned WP DL550, then the Aircraft turning right (?), then i missed the AI in the list and finally i found it "enroute" controlled by FSX *wallbash*
I don't understand what "enroute" or "controlled by FSX" has to do with it?  When the AI leaves the STAR, it is briefly controlled by FSX so it intercepts the IAF, then the final approach begins.

So i tried it several times, but it tends to be impossible to get a single aircraft on the track because... whatever.
I think there a problem transitioning between the less precise STAR vectoring algorithm and the more precise final vectoring that was added in rev. Q.  The final vectoring seems to have a problem when it is initialized with the AI point 90 degrees away from the waypoint.  This isn't a problem with the vast majority of STAR/final approach transitions because..you're basically the only person complaining about this.

The tool struggle to control which "diameter" a turn should have.
Not really, does the KLAX Loop departure no problem...you did look at that, correct?  You'll see I added a waypoint for the midway point of the turn.  However, I think I can get a loop going with just the two waypoints you seem to be stuck on.  It is sort of an amusing problem to me...how well can the AI do a 180 when the user refuses to enter anything other than the absolute minimum number of waypoints.

Basically the only way is going back to the roots, simple Airport, only 1-3 Aircrafts and then checking the basics, mathematics, rules.
Nothing for a public beta, rather doing homework.
I think you're speaking for yourself on that one.  I don't need you to help me test this.  There will be bugs during beta.  I also need you to have at least glanced through the readme to provide valid input, which I'm not sure you have done.

Hi Roland,

....

One Aircraft was circeling 30 minutes in the LOC area with assigned RWY 5R but did not get Patterns.

....

This is the only bug I found from your lengthy report and I do thank you for that.  AI spawned outside the AIMaxSpawnDistanceFromSTAR distance weren't getting assigned a STAR once they closer than this distance.  If you're using UT2 and have AIMaxSpawnDistanceFromSTAR set low (to 60), this meant some AI were getting spawned outside this distance and never getting a pattern.

Otherwise, I witnessed AI after AI after AI fly the 5L/5R STAR without any problem, making the U-turn between DL530 and DL550, then hitting the IAF, then selecting and flying a final.  Since you didn't bother to actually email me the STAR and final approach files you were using, but instead devoted extra time to your post, I had to write the STAR myself.  I've attached the files.

You'll notice I didn't write the STAR as a final approach (as you apparently did) because that simply won't work.  I noticed you were concerned about the mathematics underlying the program, but let's talk "reading" instead, as in the readme.pdf  I'll quote from it (p. 21):

" Thus, custom final approach files will only become active after the AI intercepts the IAF waypoint."

Because you incorrectly wrote the RNAV arrival transitions as a final approach, the AI left the STAR at RONAD and turned toward the IAF around NATOS.  After the AI intercepted NATOS, the final became active and the AI turned around again and headed back to the RNAV STAR transition at DL530 (because you wrote this STAR transition as the beginning of the final approach)!

Instead, as I have done (attached), extend the transitions as part of the STAR.  The AI will smoothly fly the STAR and exit it at DL555.  The AI is then in a perfect position to intercept the FSX generated IAF, which happily is near the real FAF at NATOS.  The AI then begins the final approach.  The various 5L/5R STARs are actually the best case scenario:  the STARs puts the AI near the FSX IAF and the real IAF (i.e., softball).

Great info as I contuue to test this military style overhead approach final STAR. The changing of the AI flight model is pointless as they are slewed anyway. I did witness what FlyTweety stated as "heli" like, during my Final STAR, AI have to make a 90+ turn to line up with the extended centerline of the runway. The AI are doing this fine and getting lined up, but at my "initial" waypoint, approx. 3 nm from "touchdown" waypoint, the AI are turning opposite directions and leaving the area completely at the lower alt, impacting terrian. I'll run the debug mode and see what they are doing, as AI Monitor is not showing a reason. The DCA and MHTG visuals are relavtively straight, I am trying to get a tight 360 arrival over the destination airport, possibly by not using the autogen approaches would be better. I had looked at the autogen approaches at KLAS for the runway 19's, they are using the curved ILS technique built into the ADE file.

Any issues running both Super Traffic Board and RadarContact4 together with AISIDSTAR?

It appears that it was reading the files, I'm attaching the full log file below in case you can find an error that has escaped me.

Anthony, the logs do look normal, can you send the STAR/SID files to my support address and I'll take a look at them.

Victory, can you send those files to my support address and I'll take a look.  Also send the .ini you're using.  I'll run the code in debug mode and isolate the problem.

RC4 definitely works with AISIDSTAR, it is the combination I mostly use.  I think Super Traffic Board should work too.

Hey Roland, about your previous posts regarding IAF...Is there a way to actually see where fsx places it IAF and FAF. I think if we know where these are it would help tremendously with our approaches. I just did a procedure for svmi to have the air follow the coast and land. Since there are no stars for this airport, I created a single way point as an approach for the air to target. However, once it does the ai gets clearance and does a turn around and then heads to the runway. I had only guessed where the far was. I will try putting the way point greater than 20 miles back rather than the 10 miles I had it.

It is really hard to get clearance for ai who tries to land on runways with circle approaches like mhtg rwy 2, skbo rwy 31l and 31r, mroc rwy 25, sbrg rwy 2r rnav02rw etc. If these were straight in approaches it would be fine as the faf can be intercepted easily but with these turns it doesn't have the vectors to intercept it. I will try to find a work around such as have the air over flybthe target runway to get its clearance and have it circle back on an approach file to land. I put all this effort because I want the air to taxi in after landing. I would like ai leaving and none coming in.

Cheers!

I just notice an odd phenomenon. Ai planes cant get near to NZQN Queenland. They spawn about 60 nm away but the is "culled" for som reason. The plane is high enough to be out of the mountains and I have ai cull =0 set. I Aisidstar is not running, the plane will come in. odd. BTW I have achieved success with SBRJ Rnav02rx. The plane flys by the Sugar Loaf mountain and turns in to land on rwy 2r. I will now try to do the more dramatic rnav02rw approach. This approach brings the plane from the opposite side and makes a hard left bank in the bay to rwy 2r.

Also, it would seam that you can't pause for extended periods or go to the aircraft selection menu without disrupting aisidstars.

OK, after another 11 hours of testing i think, it is time for one more longer posting  Hope, i can tell my results without too much quotings.

Regarding to your first answer, is wasn´t able to reproduce the same issue again, but i have a suspicion:

The first message in the "Dos Window" was about "Condor 1234 Flight 4711 (B2D3H) identified near destination airport EDDL is NEW, assign new AI index = 1 ...."

This was meant with Aicraft ID

To clarify the following you need to know, that i use to spot the traffic with the "Aircraft" BOB from Orbx, hanging around at the sky.

What obviously happend is, that i moved my BOB to close to that Condor AI, and forced it in a holding. Because i found a message yesterday, that i possible misread monday.

It says :"..Condor Flugdienst Flight 1234 (DE4DH) detected conflict with user aicraft object ID 1"....

So it seems, i must apologise for this misread, the ID 1 was given for the AI and for the User Aircraft. It didn´t saw himself.

Second point is the "predicted landing seperation" and the "speed variation"

Again first one apologise: I mixed up the parameter  AITrafficSpeedAdjust with  AISpeedScalar. So my setting did not have the intended result.

But nevertheless my point of view is, it don´t wotk.

When you take a look at the screenshot you see what i mean:

post-293448-0-98354800-1392216564.jpg

There are 3 in a row, but i is the one in front with the lowest speed, the second is faster and the third even faster. This was the situation at about 10 nM at the STAR and as you can see, still in the Final. This is leading into a compression, and this is why i belive, that anything is still wrong with the calculation of the separation. By the way, Runway was free, the only reason to stow down might be the crossing GA, but this is designated to EDLE, not EDDL.

Turnings:

Yes, your assumption was right, this was related to the different vectoring algorithm between STAR and Final Files.

I rember, the mentioned flight that was hitting perfect the drawed line was after i moved all those waypoints to the STAR. Unfortunatly than it happend that the AI turned right instead of turning towards Runway direction **.

And even worse, as described, in the following hours almost every approch went wrong before arriving DL 530 so that i quit and didn´t really understood why the one turn was successful.

At least, now it is fine.

**  Adding DL455 was the solution, my own STAR was ending with DL450, the Final begun at NATOS.

Finally i added more additional WP to the STARs to follow the glideslope and start the Final at abot 1550 ft, beyond DYNDB. Also holdings are switched of. This works best for me.

So, what is left now?

- AI separation is still more or less a product "by accident"

- Still big issues regarding the assigned Procedure. Today again more than the half of the assigned STARs are in the wrong direction.

Therefore the very most AI´s never come close to the IAF and also don´t get a Runway.

- Again few AI´s with assigned Runway but no Pattern

- Monitor Window Size and filter of choice

- sometimes the Message that the temporary telemetry file cannot be accessed by aisidstar (somewhat like that)

And new: After installing the P3d v2.1 update this morning out of sudden the roll out is not right anymore.

AI´s are stopping way before the assigned exit coordinates, though i adusted them several times now, there are differences of more then 300m between landing arcrafts.

Currently my coordinates pointing a spot in the middle between Exit L8 and the high speed exit L7, the Aircrafts are stopping in the middle between L6 and L5 (half the runway)

I will try to investigate this.

I send the current EDDL package to your hands

Report: Regarding the two spectacular approaches for SBRJ Santos Dumont, success! I managed to get the rnav02rw to work. Of course I had to fool fsx to do so. So the plane over flies the airport and then starts the procedure. The only problem is that because the plane got its clearance, departing planes have to wait a long while for the landing aircraft to finish the approach.

BIG NEWS!! To me at least. I found a way to know where fsx positions it approach fixes. With this info, we can better create our procedures with less problems. ADE9X has a function that displays approaches. It is located on the top right corner of the window. The first thing you need to do is to have ade9x open a default airport which would contain fsx's approaches. Select list approaches and all will be shown. I am tempted to modify some but I am not sure if fsx would accept that so easily because its a stubborn sim XD.

Cheers!

ysfsim, another great feature of ADE9X. Many airports have updated approaches built well after FS was released, as many RNAV/GPS are coming out for smaller airports that had nothing. Like the airport build function, you can add your own terminal waypoints and add/modify most of the published ones.

But from what I understand is that fsx cant follow full approach procedures like the one for MHTG. Am I wrong?

Anthony, the logs do look normal, can you send the STAR/SID files to my support address and I'll take a look at them.

Victory, can you send those files to my support address and I'll take a look.  Also send the .ini you're using.  I'll run the code in debug mode and isolate the problem.

RC4 definitely works with AISIDSTAR, it is the combination I mostly use.  I think Super Traffic Board should work too.

Hi Roland,

I managed to fix my issue. It was not, as I discovered, because of AISIDSTAR. In fact, I was able to recreate the circumstances with another program over my network. I'm putting the full explanation here in case it may help someone in the future.

The Setup

I run FSX on a network setup. I use WideFS and Simconnect. WideFS is necessary for certain programs that do not use the Simconnect interface, such as my VA's ACARS, PFPX, and TOPCAT. Simconnect is able to handle other programs such as AISIDSTAR and SuperTrafficBoard. All of those programs are running on one client computer. WideFS and Simconnect are installed correctly on both the client and the server per Mr. Dowson and the instructions posted by HiFi Sims, respectively, including port forwarding through the firewalls.

The Problem

My situation was as follows. When turning the server computer on for the first time, beginning a flight, launching WideFS and the other programs, everything worked as planned. Unfortunately, I was fighting an unrelated bug that seems to be inherent to version 5.4c of MyTraffic that results in Stackhash/BEX errors due to corrupt texture files. While pursuing the direct files that caused these bugs, the errors caused FSX to CTD. When I would restart a flight, AISIDSTAR and SuperTrafficBoard would fail to transmit and receive data from the server. This was very puzzling as I was able to run AI Traffic.exe on the client without issue.

On my FSX, I have several other programs that are triggered to run whenever FSX starts, such as OpusFSX and AI Carriers. Now, OpusFSX will generally shut-down whenever FSX terminates. Other programs, such as AI Carriers, do not. For example, if I start, end, and restart FSX 12x without shutting down my computer, AI Carriers will have 12 identical processes running. These processes are only killed by opening the task manager and deleting each individually. Until now, I had never really considered this to be anything other than benign.

The Diagnosis

Last night, I found this FSDeveloper topic regarding how one should restart Simconnect. Toward the end of the topic, someone mentions that certain programs, e.g., AI Carriers, that fail to terminate after FSX is closed or crashes can cause issues with Simconnect. Specifically, those programs may block other programs on another computer from interacting with Simconnect.

The Solution

Upon reading this information, I tried to test out the suggestion made in that topic. My FSX, which I had not closed after several crashes, was still running but not communicating with AISIDSTAR. I launched task manager and saw, as I expected, several additional instances of AI Carrier processes running. I shut down FSX, terminated each of the processes, then relaunched FSX. To my enjoyment, AISIDSTAR was now able to connect and function as it should. In the future, I would suggest to anyone with similar issues to check their processes list for any programs that have failed to close when FSX ends. Simply ending the process was enough to fix the connection issue. If that is not enough, restart your computer so that the process list can begin again without anything FSX relating already running. As can be seen in that topic, AI Carriers is not the only program that is known to remain open after terminating FSX. Several others may continue running and begin identical processes after restarting FSX. I cannot answer why AI Traffic.exe was able to run except for the fact that it sends less data through Simconnect as its purpose is to test the connection. I am now able to enjoy AISIDSTAR free from any encumberance or connection issue.

There are 3 in a row, but i is the one in front with the lowest speed, the second is faster and the third even faster.

I think you're seeing normal speed profiles during final approach.  For autogen finals, the defaults are 160 kts down to 1700 ft AGL, 150 kts down to 1000 ft AGL, and 145 kts down to 500 ft, and 130 kts down to touchdown.   If any of the AI is a prop, they fly at 0.80 of the above speeds.  If you want the final approach speeds more uniform: add AISpeed1700, AISpeed1000, AISpeed500, and AISpeedTouchDown to the .ini and equate them to the same value in knots you want (e.g., 145).  Add AITurboPropSpeedAdjust = 1 to get the turboprops flying at the same speed as the jets.  For custom final approach, enter the waypoint speeds directly into the STAR final approach file, which can be jet only, prop only, or both.

Still big issues regarding the assigned Procedure. Today again more than the half of the assigned STARs are in the wrong direction.

I really can't fix UT2, this is how the runways get assigned when it injects AI during changing wind patterns.  When using UT2, I always enter the wind direction using "customize weather" before loading a flight situation, then after the flight is loaded I start a weather program.  I do this to make sure the first batch of AI injected by UT2 get the correct runway way based on current weather.

After installing the P3d v2.1 update this morning out of sudden the roll out is not right anymore.

I noticed this, but it was for an AI that landed under the control of Prepar3D.  Are you sure you were looking at an AI under the control of AISIDSTAR?  I actually thought AISIDSTAR did a lot better job on the rollouts than Prepar3D's extremely short rollouts.

Good find, I noticed that too.  I think your suspicion is right...I've experimented with entering the IAF coordinates into the STAR files.  However, FSX doesn't let the AI advance to the landing waypoint even when the AI appears to have accurately intercepted the IAF waypoint.  I personally think FSX is calculating a different waypoint on the fly for the IAF "near" these published IAF waypoints (e.g., perhaps for approach or turn smoothing?) and the "generated" IAF is the one the AI needs to intercept.

I'm putting the full explanation here in case it may help someone in the future.

Thanks for looking into it, finding the problem, and passing along your results.  I'm not surprised one bit that corrupt AI texture files were the first problem in this chain reaction.  Gotta hand it to MS for their error-handling when loading AI textures...NOT.

I would really like the air cull function to work as I had suggested in a separate program. Us that posdiblw , Roland?

I was in Boston last night and less than say 10% of the air land after a long time. I think the 10 mile radius for ai circle until assigned approach needs to be shrunk? I alsowould llike to see the ability to create holding points that are runway specific to allow planes to circle instead of the airport. Theses points can be near the required runway to allow fsx to assign approach easier.

New Rev. 1.2Q (beta) can be found here:

Minor update for those who set the AIMaxSpawnDistanceFromSTAR parameter from its default value of 200 (nm) to a much lower value (e.g., UT2 users).  AIMaxSpawnDistanceFromSTAR determines when AI spawned/injected far away from their arrival airport are put under control of AISIDSTAR.  When the AI gets closer than the AIMaxSpawnDistanceFromSTAR distance, it is put under the control of AISIDSTAR.  However, not all AI were not getting put under the control of AISIDSTAR when the crossover occurred, resulting in some AI flying the final approach under control of FSX mixing with AI flying the same approach under control of AISIDSTAR.  This has been fixed.

Important Revision:  A registered version (4.9x or later) of Peter Dowson's FSUIPC utility is recommended to use the full functionality of AISIDSTAR.  For example, the new AICull function requires FSUIPC.  For networked configuration users, Peter's WideFS (ver. 6.9) is also recommended.
