How fast will it go when you've tested it? I played around with the IRIS PC-21 a bit, but never got it to go faster than 340 odd KTAS in level flight (at about 500ft, any higher and it lost quite a bit of speed.) If it's not faster than 350 KTAS in level flight anywhere it would be allowed without being on the whitelist, but not very competitive.

Edit: this is given last years rules. As we don't know this years rules, we don't know anything as certain.

I flew the PC-21 in some of the individual events through the mountains where great climb and descent rate, short field performance and maneuverability were important.  It's great for those situations, but when all out speed is required, as is typically needed in the RTW, it's not so great.

Best,

Tom

While no formal decisions have been taken, it is very likely that the sub-350 KTAS eligibility rule will be retained from previous events. DC is right.

is the Socota TBM 850 eligable?

is the Socota TBM 850 eligable?

Anything (last year's rule) that fit in underneath 350ktas is acceptable.

That said... barring some special category / event, doubtful it will be used as it just hasn't the speed necessary for a racer.

what aboud the redbull p38 from milviz

Would be good Leon if you flight tested it... find the Altitude where you get best KTAS in level flight, full fuel.

You can use AFSD to aid you to 'get the numbers' during testing.

Wiki shows max speed of 320Knts for the TBM 850 so it is probably eligable.

A faster turboprop would be the Epic LT. http://www.lionheartcreations.com/Epic_LT.html

It has a tricky autopilot but has been used a good bit in previous year races.

I highly recommend two freeware planes for your RTWR hanger.

  • De Havilland DH.103 Sea Hornet F.20 & NF.21  (FSX native model)
  • Grumman F7F-3  (FS9 Model)

Both can be downloaded at Sim Outhouse.  The Hornet is faster and very easy to fly and land.

If you really want the plane for yourself then buy it. If it's just for the race however I recommend you don't. That said it's on Flight1 (I presume) so you can always buy it, try it out and take it back if it's too slow.

I'll second that. It's so fast and easy to fly that it's almost a no-brainer for racing purposes. Unless the winds at around FL300 is significantly more favourable it's a match for any of the eligible turbos, and you really need to try hard or be incredibly clumsy to stress-kill it. Also climbs stupidly fast to its relatively low optimum.

I would also recommend the P-180 Piaggio Avanti (freeware Noriega version 2.xx).  Also there is the Wilco version if you want payware. (Disclaimer, I havent flown the Wilco)

Just a few things to keep in mind:

1) Push the speed needle but watch the overspeed, especially above 33,000 feet.

2) You can dive bomb the decent with flaps at 1 notch and monitor your speed on the way down with reverse props.

Others on the team have mastered the descent in #2 above, me not so much.

Update: BTW I just purchased my first aircraft..Yep the Wilco Publishing Avanti II.  Could be fun this year!

There are a few tricks to this, which I won't go into on the open forum lest I reveal certain trade secrets this close to the race.     I learned it from Jeff and would be happy to share online.  It takes a little practice to master but is really fun once you get the hang of it.

Much better options suggested here than the Red Bull P-38.

In any case, the Red Bull P-38 is based on a race aircraft and is thus not eligible for the RTWR. (There might be a special case made for it, but we have not heard such an argument. The aircraft is not on the White List.)

LOL... I am still laughing about that contradiction.
