November 1, 200421 yr Hi..Just a little wonder.. Most of my flights I shut off the pilot "voice" and do the atc-talk myself. I use a distortion pedal to get the sound a little more "rugged".. (since I can /Johan Windh
November 1, 200421 yr Yes absolutely. Especially flying single pilot IFR it is useful to talk to oneself during flight. For example during approach segments (transition, initial, intermediate, final, missed) I talk myself through pilot responsibilities (six T's: turn, time, twist, throttle, talk, track) when crossing fixes, entering or leaving holding patterns, WIRE checks (weather, instruments, radios, 'everything else') for IFR approach briefings, and checklists are always done out loud even when flying by oneself.
November 1, 200421 yr Frankly, as you can turn off the pilot's voice I once had the idea to talk out loud the pilot's part. But to be honest I did not dare to. My wife already thinks I am a little hmmm.. funny as it is. Don't know what could happen to our marriage .-)Alex
November 1, 200421 yr -Talking to yourself is OK but when you start answering, it's time to get worried :) -
November 1, 200421 yr I am talking as I am typing right now!:D During my flight I always repeat outloud what ATC is asking me to do, just like I would in a real plane. It keeps me in practice. Even if the wife is home, I don't hold back...:D
November 1, 200421 yr Same thing here.. I can let it out in front of my gal, cause my flight-sim "nerdiness" is what made her interested in the start! =) /Johan Windh
November 1, 200421 yr I usually fly on vatsim so when I fly offline I do find myself talking out loud. I always say the checks out loud or talk to a co-pilot as if I had one. Even a little conversation, is that wierd? lol cheers!
November 1, 200421 yr Hey Johan...I am doing that since MS'Flight Shop back in FS 5.1.It greatly helped me a lot by not being shy to speak in English (since it is not my native language) and when I really did get my Commercial/IFR license the transition to English ATC was smooth. During a FS flight I usually fly with headphones with a mic and leave the mic's volume high enough to hear myself speaking. FSCOM2004 has a built-in Speech recognition system that improves the immersion by speaking for real rather than "simulating"a readback to ATC. Thing is that some people have bought it after AVSIM made it to the headlines and then nobody has actually given thorough review so far. I am still waiting for someone or even AVSIM's staff to give us a good and technical review from this product. I also believe that besides some fixes and more options added in the next FS version's ATC the Speech recognition system could be already planned to be a part of it. Using Editvoicepack 3.1 to speed up the ATC has added a tremendous bonus in reality of wich actual controllers speak to the pilots but that also has decreased the time I have to readback any ATC's instructions so I have to time properly when I will press keys 1,2,3 etc when speaking to ATC.Oh, I also use Flight Assistant's virtual co-pilot. It's free and uses MS' SR.Pilot_76
November 2, 200421 yr Flightsim is about the only time I don't talk to myself. The rest of the time I wander around talking to the dog and cat, and sound like I'm a one man party. You do not.Yes I do.He does, I've heard him.Oh shut up.No, you shut up. No, YOU shut up.
November 2, 200421 yr Yes I talk to myself while flying, you do need a good headset with mic though. I have the plantronics. With the mic left on it's like an intercom in the cockpit. You can carry on a conversation with yourself, pointing out land marks and having the co-pilot work the radio and do other tasks. I like to yell out once in a while "NO GOD DAMN IT, I SAID CHEER UP NOT GEAR UP..........". I would like a hot key with a response voice like "YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT CAPTAIN" or in a female voice "CAN I GET YOU ANYTHING ELSE CAPTAIN?"
