4096 vs 2048, do you really see the difference?

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Recently I'm flying around the New York City area with Drzewiecki Design's NY city (with the batch 50 patch) and FSDT's JFK V2. Although using DX10, fsx still OOMs... VAS was at around 3.7 Gb upon finishing loading. I use PMDG NGX Mcphat livery, LOD 4.5 TML 4096, extremely dense airport buildings and dense autogens. REX textures at 4096 res.

So I decided to move the TML 4096 to TML 2048. The VAS usage came down to some 2.9 to 3.0 Gb upon loading! That saves a bunch of resources.

I cannot really see the visual differences between 4096 and 2048. Do you notice the difference my friend?

Thanks,

Zicheng

No, I can't.

1024 clouds look fine to me. Only HD I run is FSDT airports that require it and the NGX (not the livery).

However if you limit your TML to 2048, you may not see the difference on FSDT and GSX either I guess?

Honestly haven't tried it. Performance is fine as it is for me.

At 4096 I get OOM errors more often. At 2048 I do not.

Some addon's require 4096 (FSDT/PMDG for example). "Require" being that for textures to show correctly, you can and I do run at 2048.

Some issues are, for example,  textures not as well defined (for example look at the cargo signs on the buildings at FSDT KLAX with 2048 and then at 4096 to see the difference in texture quality).

So if you are using TML to 2048 you must set your clouds to 1024 clouds ? Is it okay to run TML to 2048 with clouds also 2048?

I run the lowest settings for clouds and water in REX with DXT5 optimized checked and I can't really tell a difference. I believe the lowest is 512x512.

Does the NGX use 2048 or 4096 textures? I thought it was 2048. And the only FSDT airport that uses 4096 textures is the Vancouver one, but that's user selectable.

The NGX uses 4096 textures . An for FSDT 2048 or 4096 would be just fine .

TML 2048 and LOD 5.5 more than enough for me. I am seeing no difference when I change these to higher. And I am having no OOMs with this settings.

The 737 displays 4096 textures regardless of tml setting. It's the same for any addon that only has one set of textures. Clouds at 4096 is the largest waste of vas and fps anyone can do. Don't do it.

Not true, at least for PMDG. 737ngx will display 4096 with 1024 in cfg unless you choose the low res vc. Tabs confirmed recently somewhere in a post. Test it yourself.

I keep the max texture size at 4096 but I've switched to the 2048 clouds because of the OOM errors. I can only tell the difference when flying close to the clouds, and even then it's not a huge difference.

Yeah, it might be that way in the PMDG but at the 4096 FSDT airports for example you can notice it (but you have to look for it).

Which is why FSDT and FB make you lock it at 4096 during install.

So, FSDT can bypass TML settings?
