August 20, 201312 yr Not sure which pilot it was but he had an engine fire in a DC-3, turned back to the airport, clipped some trees before making a belly landing short of the runway. 21 passengers and 3 crew on board and everyone is safe "Honest to God, we were cutting the trees," passenger Dave Connolly said. "I mean [the pilot] was able to take the tops off a few trees and fly it into a clear field. Had we hit the trees, had we gone totally into the trees, it would've been game over and he just missed the wires by inches. Some great force was with us; well, a damn good pilot but I'll give it a damn good pilot and a good force." http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/story/2013/08/19/north-yellowknife-air-crash.html Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
August 20, 201312 yr Author Wonder if it was Buffalo Joe himself on the daily sched? RJ He wasn't on the aircraft because he made a few comments about it after. The owner of the Second World War-era plane says it was built to endure some tough landings and his pilots did some quick thinking. "Nobody got hurt. Nobody got shook up. They said it was quite smooth other than the very end; there was a little bit of a bump,” said Joe McBryan. interesting how flight tracker picks up a bit of the flight path. They got high enough to get on the radar. You can see the path he turned back on Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
August 24, 201312 yr It's usually Joe that pilots the early run up the valley in his favorite aircraft the trusty old DC3. Hope its not a write off....John
August 24, 201312 yr The passengers were very lucky that they had a good pilot onboard that plane. Things could of been a lot different. August 24, 201312 yr Now I'm not a real world pilot and maybe I'm too used to modern jetliner performance, but on a single engine shouldn't you be able to fly a proper pattern and put the plane on the runway instead of in a ditch? Also, just clipping the top of the trees sounds more like lucky than good piloting to me. Either the plane had the performance to clear the trees, or it didn't, unless it was a deliberate decision to clip the top of the trees which seems rather unlikely. Don't want to Monday morning quarterback here, but I'd really like to see more information on what exactly happened before we immediately start deifying the pilots. John-Alan Pascoe
August 24, 201312 yr Commercial Member Good pilot, incredibly built aircraft. The most recent T7, bad pilot(s)? and incredibly built aircraft (so they're going to change it.... arrgghhhh). Incredibly built aircraft wins. . Dave Hodges System Specs: I9-13900KF, NVIDIA 4070TI, Quest 3, Multiple Displays, Lots of TERRIFIC friends, 3 cats, and a wonderfully stubborn wife.
