Question on PMDG's plans for 777 release

Recommended Posts

HI guys

Just a quick question regarding PMDG's plans on how to release the 777. Once the 777 is ready for release, will it suddenly appear for sale on the PMDG website with a post in this forum saying so, or will there be some warning in the form of a new post by RSR to inform us it will be available for purchase at this time on this date?

PMDG has said there will be sudden / ninja release   There will be a heads up for when it is planned to come out. They will tell us via the forums

Cheers!

Most likely a warning to give us a rough timeframe, and I'd expect at the very last minute of that timeframe the product will be released.

The process would typically be (from the NGX experience)

  1. RSR making an announcement of a very rough timeframe, in the resolution of days
  2. Hundreds of replies to that post saying thanks etc
  3. Hundreds of potential customer read into every punctuation of RSR's post and find dictionary or other credible source of reference to define this timeframe; ie. what a day means, what time frame we are talking, speculations on when during the day it is etc
  4. At the end of the rough timeframe, the AVSIM becomes EXTREMELY slow
  5. Once released, PMDG website and AVSIM are virtually unresponsive, and something like 12-hours later, you can actually expect to access a page where you can make a purchase (given that no competitors are trying to take PMDG servers down again)
  6. After your credit card info has been submitted, and you are awaiting for a confirmation email, a second feels like a day...

Something like that...

We've made a ton of investments that we hope will prevent this situation this time around. Obviously we can't predict with 100% certainty but the new system has held up to load tests many times greater than what we experienced with the NGX release, even including the DDoS stuff.

We have taken a lot of steps as well that, when the time comes, will allow us to "fine tune" performance. We have also removed guest reading of the forums, which in itself will be a tremendous resource saver. I could be all wet, but right now, we are pretty well set for the onslaught.

Hopefully it won't be like the NGX when the page would not load 5 minutes after release.

Hopefully. We could always tighten things down further. You know, like allowing access to the forums for only those  members that have been here 3 years or longer.
