August 26, 201312 yr The airplane I fly in real life (the whole class actually, Ultralight in Finland) is not allowed to spin. Yesterday it was this "airplane's day" in Sweden so I flew to an airport that offered the opportunity to experience spinning in a Bulldog that had been used by the Swedish airforce as a training aircraft. It was amazing fun! The instructor let go of the controls immediately after take off so I took us up to around 2,500 feet where I started with the maneuvers. We actually only were supposed to try entries and exits to get an appreciation for what it feels like when the spin starts. But I ended up doing fully developed spins albeit only some 5-6 rotations each time. HUGE GRIN on my face aftewards! I couldn't get home quickly enough to try it out in FSX and see if there is any resemblances to real life, but now I wonder which add-on aircraft in FSX or FS9 do you think spins most realistically? In my flightsim setup I have stick (and yoke), rudder and trackIR. I am aware of Rob Youngs spin fame of course but figured others might have caught up? I have lots of AC in my sim hanger but these I consider "spin friendly": - Real Air SF260 (FS9 and FSX), Decathlon and Spitfire (FS9), Lancair and Duke - Baytower RV-7 - A2A cub - Milviz C310R, Beech Baron 55 (multiengine so I guess it's another experience?) - Sibwings Birddog How about the A2A Mustang, P40 and Spitfire? It seems that some believe the A2A has the edge over RealAir Spit but does that go for flight charactherstics too? Juding by this video of the RealAir, seems I can't go wrong with buying that That looks more or less exactly what I experienced (plus some G's....) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyB0lJvuXm4 Krister LindénEFMA, Finland------------------
August 27, 201312 yr You'll be surprised to know Flight's aircraft do a decent job when it comes to spins (it's the best sim for stall practice hands down). I've practiced spins quite allot in the real world. Next I hear Aerofly FS pretty good for modeling spins in their aircraft. For FS9 hands down a little known Reims\Cessna 150 L (I got this years ago and don't know who made it. All the instructions are in French). Don't know what would be best for FSX as I don't use that sim. August 27, 201312 yr Author Thanks Dillon! To be honest, I didn't even think of Flight since it somehow doesn't exist in my frame of mind... Will download when I come home. Regarding the Cessna 150L, could it be this one? http://www.fs-tutorials.com/en/down_planes.php Krister LindénEFMA, Finland------------------

Regarding the Cessna 150L, could it be this one? http://www.fs-tutorials.com/en/down_planes.php That's it... Speaking of Flight, it shines mostly in crosswind takeoffs/landings and stalls. Hopefully if you like if for practice you can still get the Alaska pack and the planes with VC's. For me the Maule is the best. It's harder to get Flight's aircraft into a true spin than it is in the real world. The king of spins for me is the FS9 Cessna I mentioned above. There's another FS9 GA that's decent with spins but I forgot which one. All the usual suspects leave something lacking, RealAir included (again this doesn't apply to FSX models). I must say all options are best used with TrackIR and a good yoke/peddle set. August 27, 201312 yr Author I don't want to appear stupid but where's the actual download link on that site? James, look between the headlines "General aviation" and "Commercial aviation" - there you see "Download" and a link below. It directs you to another download page and from there you grab it! Thanks! EDIT: My AdBlocker was blocking the download link for some reason. Found it, ignore me haha James Bennett
August 28, 201312 yr The default Extra is terrible for simulating stalls and spins. It actually will start a climb in fully developed spins. In fact all the default GA aircraft are bad at it. I have done RW spins and aerobatics training and find that the A2A cub is very good and recovers faster and positively when the PARE technique is used. The way the aircraft rolls and yaws is spot on. Falling leaf stalls are also fun to simulate on this aircraft. This is the only non default aircraft I own so I can't comment on any others.

I'm curious to see what you think seeing as you've done it in the real world. These days it's a unique experience to have the opportunity to do spins. These days it's a unique experience to have the opportunity to do spins. Dillon, I agree that the landings where much better in Flight, but I was still able the replicate that odd behavior where you can climb thousands of feet in a spin. I had a video of it on YouTube for a while for Jcomm to see, but I might have taken it down. I found the spins to be a little strange in Flight, though they were better than stock FSX for sure. Either way A2A has demonstrated to me that it is possible to mimic the visuals from entry through developed in their FSX Cub, though I have no clue about the quality of the yaw, roll or descent rates.I haven't seen any published figures for RW Cub spins.
August 28, 201312 yr Somewhat off topic but does anyone know of any other similar quality general aviation freeware like that Cessna 150 mentioned above? James Bennett

August 29, 201312 yr Author Are you saying you entered a spin at 2,500 agl and did 5-6 rotations? How was New Zealand!!! Don't know about New Zealand but China looked pretty good! Actually I think we were a couple of hundred higher - we started out at around 2,300 feet but when I asked if we could some more spins we climbed slightly higher. So perhaps around 2,700 AGL I kicked in the rudder and off we went. Krister LindénEFMA, Finland------------------
