Winds Aloft Import - Some Questions I Don't See Answered in Manual

Featured Replies

Sure, I click the right LSK for the waypoint and it goes to the ACT (waypoint name) WIND page, all blank.

Would some one care to provide step by step procedures of how to import  OPUS weather?

The steps above are not really complete

ZORAN

Maybe the guys from AS2012 can add an "Export to PMDG" button

They mentioned a few days ago on their forum that they've programmed this already. It's in testing with a few other things and should be released soon.

That sounds great...

THIS WILL END ALL OF YOUR PROBLEMS

First, following the instructions document to the letter would solve all of your issues, but for some reason, people do what they think should happen, instead of what's written in the file.

1. The file name:

The file name should be [iCAO][iCAO].wx.  As an example: KIADEGLL.wx.

NOT KIADEGLL01.wx, KIADEGLLfluffybunnies.wx, or KIADEGLL_1.wx.  The whole reason you have sequence numbers is to have multiple copies.  This is necessary for routes.  For weather, you don't want to keep multiple copies because old weather does me no good for today's flight.  The system matches the two ICAOs in the filename to the ICAOs on the RTE page, not to the saved route.

The two ICAO codes with no space in the middle, and that's it.

2. The file extension:

The file extension needs to be .wx. If you're using Notepad to create this file, it will automatically add .txt to the file extension unless you use the file type drop down menu to select ALL FILES when you're on the Save As menu (note the default when you're on that menu is .txt).  If you have known file types hidden (default in Windows), you need to unhide them to change the file type if you've already saved it (google "show file extensions").

3. The file call:

After trying to import the weather, FSX hangs on to the file so you cannot edit it.  If it does not give you an error, but nothing shows up, your file was formatted improperly.  You will have to wait until another flight to try it again.  If you follow these steps and ensure you copy the correct information out of the ActiveSky (whichever versions give you the wind digest - not just AS2012), it will work.  I and a few others have asked for the feature to import and drop the file as soon as the import is over so that an update can be processed later on.

In my experience, each time this has come up, it has been an issue where the user is doing something incorrectly.

[DISCLAIMER]

This is going to appear terse, and off-putting to some, but it needs to be said.

[/DISCLAIMER]

Read it carefully in the file, or read it here and wait for a response, but either way, you're going to have to read.  Please pay close attention to the various read me files and manuals that come with the aircraft.  It's amazing how fluidly the aircraft works when you've read all of that...

I have never had problems importing weather to the fmc. However I'm getting high inaccuracies in fuel predictions even when winds aloft are loaded. Ie. KATL OMDB

EFOB (pounds)

Before pushback: 22

After takeoff: 21.2

At T/C: 19

At half route: 15

At STAR: 11

FOB after landing: 8.2

In other flights I have gotten the "insuficient fuel" message at half route

Is this normal?

Thank you for your quick answer Kyle.

Yeah I saw that thread when it was started. But I can't find the answer there. I mean, I'm not using any custom panel state (only short or long turn states) even tried with the default panel state. I have tried flying with clear skies. I have even tried to fly without any cargo or pax and it keeps happening. And the difference between EFOB and actual FOB after landing is way to high. I don't think my routes are wrong either...

But I can't find the answer there.

His answer was the freezing he mentioned toward the bottom.  Are you seeing freezes from time to time (or are there periods where you walk away from the sim where it could be freezing and you're not seeing it)?  If so, apparently the fuel logic continues to run in the background, while you are not moving.

Kyle Rodgers

Hi all,

I seem to have an even more basic problem:

I can select the part of the AS2012 report, but cannot copy it.

What am I doing wrong?

Many thanks in advance for the right answer :)

Great plane btw!

Im currently running AS2012 with SP3 Beta, i have no problems what so ever with importing the winds, for anybody who wishes to update or is using AS2012 SP3 beta, this is what i do. the first bit is for what i do and may not be relevent to some. So i creat my flightplan in EFB, and save it into my PMDG flighplans folder, and also as a standard FSX.pln.

1: i load the flighplan into AS2012 (you should be aware how to do that using the standard .pln file)

2: run FSX from AS2012

3: start flight as normal, loading the same flight in PMDG format into the FMC.

thats it, after i have done my FMC setup the winds are automatically in there.

I see. But that's not my answer either. My 777 haven't suffered a single "freeze" since I bought it the day it was released. In fact the only problems I have with it are the fuel predictions and the cold and dark panel state.

If it's not the freezing, I'm inclined to chalk it up to user error, to be honest.

Are you entering winds aloft for the flight in the FMC?  If not, then the FMC isn't compensating for the wind, so the values will definitely be off if you're flying with real world weather.  Since the 777 flies such long legs, the exposure to wind increases the difference in the values at various stages.

Yes. Always prior to start a flight I load the flight plan into AS2012. I create a text file, enter the data required there. After that I select the name (ie KATLOMDB) And change the file extension form .txt to .wx after that I cut the file and paste it into PMDG/WX sub folder. Resuming the story, I think the .wx is being correctly import to the FMC due to the fact that after I select to import the file appears something like W next to every waypoint.
