September 20, 201312 yr ATC Error perhaps? http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-09-20/aircraft-in-near-miss-over-great-australian-bight/4971478
September 20, 201312 yr Most probably. But why would everybody call it a "near miss". It was clearly a miss as opposed to a "hit". "Near hit" - o.k. "Near miss" - isn't that supposed to be a collision? What happened to AVSIM

September 20, 201312 yr Minimum horizontal separation was 5.6nm. Minmum vertical separation 700 feet. Hardly a near miss. Controller(s) realised mistake early and corrected the situation. hardly seems a major incident to me.
September 20, 201312 yr Yup, atc being stood down is pretty standard procedure, while the tapes are replayed and the different phases of investigation. I know a few people at ML ctr, will try to find out what happened. Seeing the media, one of the jets was at non standard level. TAATS warning should have sounded, so would be interesting to find out how the holes in the swiss cheese lined up on this one. Sent from my Mobile thing Minimum horizontal separation was 5.6nm. Minmum vertical separation 700 feet. Hardly a near miss. Controller(s) realised mistake early and corrected the situation. hardly seems a major incident to me. It is classified a major incident. Dont think they were in radar airspace, heard two conflicting stories already. 5.6nm horizontal or 700 feet vertical are both breaches of procedural standards. September 20, 201312 yr Lack of sep assurance is the call. Not much being said but lots of lessons to be studied. Mode Sierra kicked in, to be investigated whether traffic levels played a part or taats worked as it should. Sent from my Mobile thing Will Reynolds Flight Sim Addict
September 20, 201312 yr But why would everybody call it a "near miss". It was clearly a miss as opposed to a "hit". "Near hit" - o.k. "Near miss" - isn't that supposed to be a collision? My bet is that its use originated from the US Navy after action reports of WWII. There was a line item called 'Near missed' on the report which was where one would report enemy fire that landed nearby. As in a missed shot that was near. A near miss.
