Mindstar GNS 430/530 release this Friday

Recommended Posts

There is no terrain detail at all.  The reason:  cost.  Acquiring such a set of databases is rather expensive to begin with and in the real world training environment there would be almost no return on investment.

More terrain data is on our list of "wants", but until it becomes a cost effective solution it's just on the list.

It seems you could always pass the cost of the terrain database onto the end user by providing a Deluxe addition, because I'm sure there are those would be willing to pay a little more to get the simulation realism of having the GPS depict what it would actually depict in reality.  Not suggesting you ask for an arm and a leg :P , but look how many people payed a hundred bucks just so they could have Crossfill in reality xp, just to extra a bit more realism.

Our product is first and foremost for real world training and as such it's development is driven by that environment.

To be honest, home user sales could never recoup the cost of obtaining all of that data.

I thought the vnav function on the gns430/530 was just a calculator without interacting with the instruments.

just like you set where you want to be at what altitude and at what decent rate and it calculates when you have to decent and the needed rate to keep up with the calculation made like with the reality xp one.

haven't seen a real one and if the real one can interact with the instruments then yeah properly won't happen, but just the calculation when to decent at what rate would be way enough for me.

Nope, in the real airplane, once you hit the TOD, the glide-slope indicator and/or flight director needle will actually deflect downward, indicating you need to drop the nose and descend. If autopilot is on, it will do it for you.

Howdy, Ed!

I have been testing this product too.

One feature I know you guys will like is the ability to use your keyboard to input into the GNS. Makes pulling up an airport, VOR, etc much easier.

Gosh, it just seems like we could get one source of data for everything to use...pay once and everything's in sync.  Today I flew what was supposed to be an ILS into Austin and, guess what, no ILS signal.  My frequency was right and the RXP 530 had the right ID...just nothing there.  I ended up flying visual.  *sigh*

I have the RXP 530 in 7-8 different airplanes and I truly hope that it gets as solid as the RXP stuff.  It's greatly needed for P3D.

Gregg, Not to stray off topic, but check this site out if you haven't already...

Great tip, Lee. I'm going to have to bug Stasi for not telling me that.

This is what I was referring to when I mentioned updating off-airport navaids.  Doesn't do anything for anything on-airport (including ILS changes), though.

That's useful.

Also, about adding to other panels.

For those with FS Panel Studio it is super easy, it is also just as easy to add via the panel.cfg

Of course 3d knobs get in the way, but the models that you can put it in work very nicely.

So there is no terrain feature like there is in the RXP GNS devices, hmmm so this isn't the saviour I was hoping for for P3D, oh well its getting there I suppose.

Cheers, Andy.

RXP is a completely different product in that Reality-XP didn't create a GNS at all.  They simply piggy-back on the Garmin trainer for the GNS and provide it's display and control interface in an FS gauge.  Thus by doing that Reality-XP created a GNS that has no cost of database, which is way different than what we did.  Our GNS is a completely custom piece of code that has 100% of it's functionality actuall written by us, not Garmin.  Any features that require a database would add to the cost of the product.

But, changing navaids using this "( this site )" makes the MSFS's moving map INOP.

I think its author also make cautions.

Would there be a way to read FSX's own terrain mesh within "X" radius of the aircraft's current position? I may be wrong, but I believe the terrain display in the Leonardo MadDog MD80 works in this fashion...

I've never used the FSX moving map (at least that I know of...some add-ons may be using it behind the scenes.)

I use it all the time to verify ILS freqs and nearby navaids ...

I meant it as a caution for those that do find the MSFS Map view useful from time to time.

That is true.

And, it works well.

And all the RealityXP's features (Terrain, TCAS, WAAS, roads, map, crossfill to name a few) are working like in the real unit.

Just wondering .. does Minstart (GNS 430/530) purchase come with a 30 day money back guarantee?
