Interesting Part of the Livery Manager

Featured Replies

Hi All

I noticed when using the PMDG Livery managers there is an 'Add' and 'Remove' Button. My question is why is there no export button?

Obviously you can just right click and hit export, but I was just wondering the reasoning of this button being non-apparent.

My guess: it's used far, far less than the two other, since 99% of the users of the Export feature, will be repainters. As such, most of the 777 users won't need the export feature.

I think so as well. What I would like, though is a function akin to "export all into one file" - great for backing up before reinstall, when changing computers and so.

User Interfacing 101:

Never put something in plain view of the average user for a feature they're not supposed to use (or may not know the function of).  It'll just generate more help requests, forum questions, and so on.

"So I downloaded the file, and then clicked Export.  How do I install it now???"

Only repainters will use it, and they have the necessary information to export the files.  They don't need an obvious button to do it.

Basically, think of it like this:

Why is Apple so successful?  They set up all of their products to be "intuitive."  In other words, they set up their products such that you don't really need a manual to understand how to operate them.

How does this work?  They assume everyone who will be using their products is an idiot, and set things up to be blatantly obvious.  Seriously.

Hear hear!! The number of support requests I facepalmed (not a verb, but in this case it is) in the past is simply staggering.

Yup.  I think part of the reason I'm so blunt here is from working too many support requests at my previous jobs.

"Why do you always first assume it's a user issue?!?"

haha - so true.  Great show.  We only got it over here through Netflix.

It's actually a very old joke. Used to go something like:

"What does a software engineer do if his car won't start?

Get out of the car and get back in again."

Still hear the same "turn it off, turn it back on" advice from broadband support people. In fact it's on our ISP's recorded message while you wait for an agent.

Sadly, that's worked for me...

When I first ran the start sequence, my brain forgot to initialize the depress clutch call.  My car has a clutch lockout so that it won't lurch in case you've left it in gear, and I'd been driving a rental automatic the prior week.  Recomposed myself, and my old habit kicked in (literally) and the car started up.

I've definitely heard the same message when calling the ISP, too.

Our new car has that as well. My dad, as a proud new owner, of course took the car around a couple friends to show it off - one of said friends got in, looked at the interior, turned the key... and promply got out saying the car was broken. Turned out he was way used to starting his truck on neutral with no clutch.

Sadly isn't the word.

My most embarrassing "get back out of the car" moment was after a two week holiday touring in the US (my first experience of driving on the wrong side of the road). When we got back to my own car in the LGW car park, without thinking I got in the left seat.

Haha. I've always thought about what it would be like to do that. It would be the opposite for me though, living in the US. I'd really have to pay attention to 1.) not walk to the wrong side of the car, and 2.) make sure I was always turning into the correct lane for the country I was in. I could see some tourists (going either way) accidentally making a turn and ending up going against traffic. I DO NOT want to be that guy.

You don't even have to get into a car.  As a pedestrian, just getting accustomed to looking the correct direction is a mental game.
