Megascenery Earth Switzerland + openVFR Autogen

Featured Replies

Perhaps I was a bit harsh on MSE Switz.  And I think I'm obliged to post some screenshots of the possibilities of a product like MSE Swiss plus openVFR's autogen program.  In all hoensty, if it weren't for openVFR this wouldn't be nearly enjoyable but the two go together like peas and carrots.  I do not agree with MSE's stance that tress and objects hurt the scenery in any way as the density of objects can be adjusted in FSX menu.

Anyway, this is a crappy computer running 1280x1024, only 1 gb of ram, and the ability of this computer to load high res textures is limited, (my laptop is getting repaired), but I think this does it some justice.  In essence a poor-man's Swiss Pro.

Thanks for posting the screens fscottee. Yes, openVFR autogen is the way to go if you want to add autogen objects to MSE regions or areas, and the openVFR stuff is quite inexpensive.

Autogen on photoreal is a personal thing. To me, looking at your shots, I am not liking the autogen there myself - it seems to stick out too obviously in some cases, but in others, where you are passing just over hills etc, it does look quite ok. I personally prefer just to use the photoscenery without autogen, but I understand why others will like seeing it added.

So yes, if you are a MSE user and want to have autogen objects, check out what OpenVFR offers!

Thanks again for your post and opinion.

[EDIT] Actually, looking at your screenshots fscottee, you are not really seeing the MSE textures at their full resolution. It CAN look far better than this with a few simple tweaks of FSX settings and video card settings.... Much better in fact. If you want to investigate that, please send me a PM and I am happy to work with you to improve the visuals. Basically, the screenshots you see on the MSE Switz official pages are what you can get straight from the sim with the right settings. We havent edited those at all, except to add the caption and logo etc... so I think we could greatly improve the resolution and clarity of your MSE textures if you want to give it a try?

I understand your frustrations with some of the MSE photoscenery but I really do not understand posting images using "a crappy computer" that has limited ability to load high res textures.  It really isn't fair to the developers IMHO.  At least you indicated in your posts that you do not have a top of the line system and I, for one, appreciate that.  Try to upgrade to a computer like the one I just built (see specs in sidebar) and you can hopefully have pictures like the following (Arrival to Palm Springs CA):

Great photos, Jim. What turbo twin is that? I couldn't find the name on the dashboard or maybe I wasn't looking hard enough. It looks terrific from the inside (I love the woodgrain of the pull-out tray in your fist shot)

I posted the screenshots to show the ability of openVFR and MSE, not necessarily to showcase MSE.  My laptop is currently being repaired so I'm stuck with the old Athlon desktop with CRT monitor.  Thus the crappy resolution.

However, my complaint about Swtizerland still stands.  No amount of adjusting will fix the inconsistency of the colors.  I posted that zoomed out shot in another thread.   Had I been given an opportunity to see Switz zoomed out, I never would have purchased it.

Arnie....if it ain't broke, don't fix it...

Nice shots Jim!

That's the Duke B60 from RealAir (see Arne beat me to it!).  Love to make shots out of the passenger window!

Unfortuntely Jim, some people may not have the option to build a better PC.  We're from every corner of the globe here in this hobby, from the comfortably afluent to the below the poverty line.    I personally don't seen any issue in anyone posting screenshots, just because their equipment is old or low spec;  certainly as long as they disclose their specs, as the OP did clearly in this case.

I personally wouldn't say to someone who shares that they have very low specs, "Try to upgrade to a computer like the one I just built..." because it assumes they have the same means as I do, and a lot of people will not have the same means.    To some people the cost of building a new rig like yours, is a months food on the table for the family.

I'm not intending to have a go or anything, just sharing a viewpoint, which seemed relevent as the OPs low specs seemed to be key to this discussion.

Totally disagree with you there Dave.  If your computer cannot handle the scenery, do not install it.  It is as simple as that.  If you want nice looking scenery with lots of eye-candy, upgrade your system.  But don't complain if you have a system that [admittedly] cannot handle the scenery.

All I will add for now is that even on lower end computers like the original poster has mentioned these shots were taken on, MSE can still be improved quite markedly without a major performance hit, so the lack of the latest super-speed PC is not a factor in at least getting improvement in MSE visuals with a few quick tweaks :)

Even with low res its still 1000x better than default for sure!
