November 29, 201312 yr Never experienced this, but then again, I disabled HDR due to blackout bug since I bought it. Even though I like P3D, I still feel Opus worked better in FSX, eyecandywise. Not sure if this is Opus fault, or if it has something to due with how P3D is designed when drawing clouds... November 29, 201312 yr for me diabling hdr is not working. was currently flying over germany in rainy and overcast weather and frames droped down from 30 (external locked) to 8 !!!!!!! Disabling volumetric fog results in constant 30 fps.... f.... it Carsten U
November 29, 201312 yr But even without it, weather still looks so much better than in FSX. November 30, 201312 yr Author Looks like volumetric fog was the issue for me - once I turned it off, my frames in the Major Thunderstorm theme jumped from 15 to the upper 30s (locked at 40). Setting special effects sliders at low helped, too. I noticed that the haze/rain layer from the cloud bottoms down to the ground is rendered as a hard line that moves back and forth along the autogen. A bit nasty. But that happened with or without volumetric fog. If I recall correctly, FSX weather themes did that, too, so my guess is it's an artifact of the old weather system. I'm assuming Opus and the other external weather engines will do better once we (and maybe the developers) get everything tuned. With rain getting under control, I'm now trying to strike a balance between shadows and autogen. Results on that later, probably in a separate thread, as soon as I have a clue what I'm doing... November 30, 201312 yr Alan have you tried unlocking the frames to unlimited? Helped me. Rob"Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it"
November 30, 201312 yr I"m going to test out the fog option because HDR on or off makes no difference. I fired up P3D v.1, loaded up EDDF and had massive cloud cover, my frames stayed around 35fps. Same scenario in V2 and my frames drop to 20fps. It feels to me like V2 is creating a extended layer of clouds which might be causing the problems. There's a lot of bugs in V2 and maybe this might be one. I'll keep playing around and see if I come up with anything.
November 30, 201312 yr Author Alan have you tried unlocking the frames to unlimited? Helped me. Tried it but for some reason can't get decent results. My frames peak around 60 but they fluctuate wildly and I get serious stutters. Same thing with frames at 60. When I lock at 40, everything smooths out. I have no idea why. I need to play more with settings and see if I can get the same performance at unlimited that you and others are reporting. Alan Ampolsk"Ah, Paula, they are firing at me!"-- Saint-Exupery
November 30, 201312 yr I'm now trying to strike a balance between shadows and autogen. I case you missed it: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/427529-simple-solution-for-shadows-and-loss-of-fps-or-the-tweaking-has-begun/
November 30, 201312 yr Hi Alan, That is a nice system you have there. Odd isn't it how results vary so much from system to system. Best of luck buddy! After reading allot of your post I nominate you for the Avsim member of the month for being such a nice guy! Rob"Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it"
November 30, 201312 yr Author I case you missed it: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/427529-simple-solution-for-shadows-and-loss-of-fps-or-the-tweaking-has-begun/ Thanks - I'd come across it and I applied that tweak before my most recent round of testing. Works beautifully and it's the basis for my current solution. Right now I've got some shadows on at lower quality, autogen at very dense, and volumetric fog off. Last night I was able to fly the River Visual to runway 19 at KDCA with Opus running (admittedly only light cloud cover) and steady frames around 30 in the Just Flight Connie. Never had anything close to that in FSX. I still need to work with the shadows a bit more (I had terrain completely off, should probably set it to receive) but things are definitely going in the right direction. Your shadow settings are an enormous help - very much appreciated. Hi Alan, That is a nice system you have there. Odd isn't it how results vary so much from system to system. Best of luck buddy! After reading allot of your post I nominate you for the Avsim member of the month for being such a nice guy! Yes, a very good system, but it's always responded a little bit differently than other comparable ones. Maybe the result of my using NickN's tuning in the OS. Or just one of those FSX/P3D/W7 eccentricities - who can say? Thanks for your nomination - that's very kind, but I'm really not contributing nearly as much as others, like J van E (without his shadow tweak I wouldn't have P3D V2 running nearly as well). I'm really just stumbling around in the dark and sharing the location of the walls once I find them by walking into them. Glad it's helpful, but others deserve much more credit. Thanks again, though!
