X-Plane 10: Experimenting with art controls (Raleigh scattering)

Recommended Posts

Well - the good news is that Ben is working on an improvement to the atmospheric scattering algorythm.

Any sim that includes no tweaking is a good sim to have.If they do implement athmospheric scattering that works also in the distance, hell that would be awsome.

I thought I would inform you guys that this thread is one of the reasons I'm planning on ordering XPX. Those screenshots are incredible!

X plane visuals are in a motion. But hey even the screen shots look great

I thought on the dev blog someone mentioned the revisions will be significant?  IE they might break these raleigh scattering datarefs....

yeah here it is unless I'm reading this wrong:

Then look at this silly stuff.... cloud textures aren't meant to be changed say what?

My understanding is that the nature of some of the artrefs will change, but there will still be artrefs that can be tinkered with if you want:

"So if you are just tinkering with X-Plane, the good news is: if your art controls have changed, there’s a chance that you may be able to achieve a better effect using the new code."

Pascal was the first guy to bring the colour changes possible with scattering to everyone's attention and was then invited by Ben to get in touch with the art guys so he might be able to shine some light on what exactly will change.

Mind you hopefully we won't have long to wait to find out ourselves...

No, you use one or the other.

Hi Stephen,

I'm working on atmospheric scattering with Ben. He's a great guy to work with! Please keep in mind there are a few issues to solve, and I don't know when or even if my work will find it's way to the public version.

The thing with art controls is: these are the last step after all the other technologies have been integrated. See Ben's blog for his comments about the new fog and visibility. In the meantime, I've set up a whole infrastructure to easily tune and harmonize the different elements together. In fact, I'm tweaking more thant just the art controls. Especially the sky color files, which I'm editing with GIMP, my image editor of choice since many years. :)

Sounds great Pascal. An editor allowing easy tuning of the various refs would be worth it's weight in gold. Look forward to seeing what you come up with!
