I Come to Bury (Orbx England) Not to Praise it

Recommended Posts

The thread title is spot on. His expectation was that he would hate Orbx England(I came to bury Orbx) so he was prepared to 'bury' it. But he was pleasantly surprised by how good it is(not to praise it). What's the difficulty there?

That's Shakespeare by the way. Julius Caesar.

Shakespeare took some poetic license with the facts. According to a contemporary account from a Roman Historian, what Mark Anthony actually said was, "I come to bury Caesar, he has begun to stink" [emoji13]

While we are talking about this scenery, I have a question to ask. I love PNW, SAK and Scotland by FTX. Ususally I fly in rural area. I liked it that way, but I also have to do so. Frame rates at Seattle are terribly low. And here comes my question. I would like to purchase England, but are the frame rates for example in Lodon area as low as they are in Seattle?

Seattle is perhaps the heaviest test of ORBX scenery, with YCBS (Canberra) a close second. Nothing in England comes close. Combining ORBX regions with other companies' city or airport add-ons requires some compatibility research first.

Yes, most other places in England are pretty good from an FPS viewpoint but the London area is a problem, particularly if' like me you also have payware versions (in my case UK Xtreme) of all the major airports installed. But I must admit I also have all my autogen etc maxed out. Sadly if you also use resource intensive aircraft you will start to experience OOMs after flying in the London area for a while also.

Saying all that however, I have recently replaced my VFR Gen X photoreal scenery / Treescapes for England and Wales with the FTX scenery and the overall impression and atmosphere of flying over England and Wales is much more realistic with the FTX product. Furthermore flying all over rural England and most of the other cities away from London is a pleasure and generally without problems.

Yes London s*cks as well fps wise. Of course depending on your system.

I don't consider my system to be that great, yet I honestly and sincerely have no problems with London at all. I can maintain an almost 100% 30fps [locked @30] flying from London City following the Thames west over the heart of the city. I find Seattle much tougher, dropping to the lower twenties.

In fact I am amazed how slick London runs with FTX EU ENG... this is with Autogen at 'V-Dense'

That's my experience anyway

Actually Paul, you're praising what myself and many others regard as Orbx's least, well produced scenery. Perhaps I could be so bold as to suggest if you like England then you should try PNW and be really impressed!

A valuable, all-in-one improvement for the default England landscape, the default London cityscape, and a make-over for all the default airports in the covered area.

But even the developers (SIM720 having been contracted by ORBX ... but not anymore) would have to admit, that any other region they did (like FTX Scotland and the Ireland titles) is actually better produced.

I would be interested to know,  does ORBX England have coastal landmarks like Blackpool Tower and Piers etc., as these type of structures are integral to UK VFR flight.   I have all ORBX NA,  but that although extremely good does lack in a lot of areas,  and before anyone jumps down my throat, I have been BETA testing for some stuff that is hopeful for the future.

How is Ireland?

How is Ireland?

Lee, I haven't bought it (yet), as the Republic would leave open an ugly piece of default Northern Ireland scenery. And the NIR region is way too small to justify its price (no payware quality airport included, as opposed to FTX Wales and its Cardiff rendition).

Too expensive in my book to cover the complete Irish island with two separate FTX regions  (yet ... last year's holiday sales changed my view on WLS dramatically).

Judging by the screenshots and other simmers' feedback they (IRL and NIR) seem to be at least the same (high) quality as FTX Scotland. Unfortunately, neither the Rep nor NIR feature custom mesh, which is pretty unusual regarding the FTX regions' design concept.

Hi Echofox,

Yes, EU England does display Blackpool Tower and many of the seaside piers are also included!

Cheers,

Mal.

Brian, Mal ,thanks for the info.  ORBX promo screenshots don't give a very good impression of England and it's unique countryside etc.  Leaving out Blackpool Piers is like leaving out The Tower of London, part of heritage. I have installed all of NW USA ORBX, and having done some beta testing some of it is lacking, I have now started to install add-ons in places, especially "airports" and some custom scenery.  If I spend my money on any product it has to be right, and regretfully in my own opinion not all of ORBX is,  (but I still enjoy it !)

Cheers

Echofox.
