March 24, 201412 yr Need your experience here.I had built a new system a couple of months back. Here are the specs:1. Intel 4670k overclocked to 4.3 ghz2. 8gb 2133mghz ram3. Corsair H110i water cooler4. Nvidia GTX 770 ACX supercooled 4gb5. Corsair 650w power supplythe problem here is that with P3Dv2.1 and Xplane my system shutsdown after 10-15 mins.Initially I thought that its because of the overclock. I got it down to 3.5Ghz and it still shutsdownafter 15 mins. This does not happen with FSX. Stress test with other tools goes fine with CPU testing. But when I stress test the GPU the system dies down after 10-15 mins. The GPU temp has been undercontrolat 77.Since P3Dv2 and Xplane has offloaded things on GPU which leads me to believe that when GPU is under load the machine shutsdown.I had a look at the requirements for the GPU and found that it needs 45A on 12V rail on minimum while my power supply only supplies 30A.To me it looks like this might be the issue. But am not too sure of it since i dont wanna get a new power supply and the issue still exists.Just asking it out over here to see if you guys think that this could be a probable issue. In that case I can get a new power supply to test it out. Thanks,Pankaj Just posting my actual specs here.. 1.Intel Core i7-4770K Quad-Core Desktop Processor 3.5 GHZ 8 MB Cache BX80646I74770K2. March 24, 201412 yr Pankaj, Likely to be a power supply issue, in my opinion. I have had this problem a couple of times over the years (the system inadvertently rebooting under load), and a higher capacity power supply has always solved the problem. Cheers, Gerald
March 24, 201412 yr Looking at the specifications on the manufacturer's web site it lists "multiple 12 volt rails". Multiple rails for the 12 volt bus is generally NOT a good thing for a power supply used in a computer with a high-performance GPU, or overclocked CPU. Much better to use a PSU with single-rail 12Volt bus, with a higher current rating. As you noted, though your PSU has two +12 volt rails, each is limited to 30 amps, which may not be enough Jim BarrettLicensed Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic, Avionics, Electrical & Air Data Systems Specialist. March 24, 201412 yr Author Thanks for your reply guys..Any pointers to which ones would be good and what watts should i go with? In case P3d goes SLI way i dont want to change it again. If anybody has any recommendations I would highly want to go with it.I had seen some posts on the power calculations..To me it looks like 1000 w with one 12V rail providing more than 45 amps should be good. But just wondering how would it work for SLI config. Do I need two 12V rail providing more than 45 amps? Or should one 12V rail providing more than 90 amps be good enough? In the meantime I will read up on this rails thing to understand whats happening there. Pankaj Thanks,Pankaj Dekate
March 24, 201412 yr i would think this is related possibly to temp or overheating maybe of cpu or mobo, have you checked ur running temps? system shuts down to prevent overheating. in regards of powersupply, 850 like thermal make will do just fine, you dont need 1000 unless u planning to run some heavy duty OC and multiple SLI configs etc. Thanks, Andrei. March 24, 201412 yr Thanks for your reply guys..Any pointers to which ones would be good and what watts should i go with? In case P3d goes SLI way i dont want to change it again. If anybody has any recommendations I would highly want to go with it. I use a Thermaltake SP850M Modular PSU. Not sure of your geographic location, but if you are in the U.S., these are normally in stock at most BestBuy stores for around $125. It has a single 12-volt rail, rated at 70 Amps, which should be more than sufficient for your system, though if you eventually go to a SLI configuration, it might not be enough. I also run a GTX-770 GPU, and have no issues. The SP850M has been a great PSU in the 2 years I have owned it - rock solid stability. I had bad experiences with previous multiple-rail PSUs, experiencing unexpected shutdowns under heavy CPU and graphics loads, which sounds similar to your situation. March 25, 201412 yr Author Thanks barrett and all..thats a good enough pointer to start Thanks,Pankaj Dekate
March 25, 201412 yr Author I ordered a Thermaltake SP850M Modular PSU. Will test tonight with Xplane 10 and post the results. Pankaj Check for invalid or corrupted drivers across the board. I dont think its the drivers since its a clean build and works well with FSX..Just that when the GPU is under load while playing xplane or p3d that it bonks in 15 mins.. Thanks,Pankaj Dekate
March 25, 201412 yr Commercial Member I'd still run Windows Driver Verifier anyway in several instances for a few hours of use each. Could be files associated with any piece of software/hardware combination. Same thing happened to my system and I was able to thankfully isolate it in this manner and fix it. March 25, 201412 yr If you have overclocked it could be that, that is causing a shut down? I had constant BSOD's on my old system when under heavy load due to a bad overclock.
March 25, 201412 yr Author I had it back to 3.5ghz and it still shut down..so my suspect is psu Thanks,Pankaj Dekate
March 25, 201412 yr It can be a faulty PSU, nomally this PSU handle your system easy. The 24 pin is on rail 12v 1 and 8pin cpu on rail 12v 2 , if you feed the gpu from 12V rail 2 it can be problem with 30A . Not now how you setup the connectors but feed the gpu from rail 12v 1 should not be any problems even if you OC the GPU. feed the GPU from rail 1 and 2 should also work. You have a new 1rail PSU that probaly do the trick, if running on the edge its more easy to run single rail personally a never have had problems with multi rails or run 2 PSU on the same system. http://
March 26, 201412 yr Author Ok guys..i bought a new psu with single rail of 12 v and 70 amps and xplane went well..no more shutdown,,will test p3d and let you all know Thanks,Pankaj Dekate
