Great Article, thanks for the links. I guess that the bus bandwidth limit is the problem, and reducing the complexity of all of our objects is a good goal to work towards. The less triangles to push down the more that can be rendered.

I wish we could lay this "my preferred sim vs your preferred sim" thing aside for a moment and remember, that we all belong to the relatively small bunch of flightsim enthusiasts. And as such, one simply has to

admit, that these pictures show the most realistic scenery ever to be seen on any platform. At least that's what I think and feel when I see these screenshots!

 

No, I definitely agree, this IS the best I've ever seen scenery wise, but I'm trying to say that more can be done. It looks fantastic, please don't misunderstand!

Lots more can be done. The building library definitely does need work. I'm slowly working on replacing the R2 buildings with our own, as well as programming W2XP (I need to grow another set of hands ;)), which means we can texture them, and fix the alignment problems). Blacky75 is working on a huge generic house library for Europe (See his >>blog<< for info),  however we badly need regional buildings for places like Spain, France, US and the UK. Even if you don't know how to create models in Sketchup/Blender, providing royalty free photos of buildings in your area will hugely help us make buildings more realistic and less plastic looking. All of Europe currently looks like the Czech Republic/Poland :-)

You could, it would take some work and maybe getting others to help out, but creating photos or buildings for the building library would be a good start  :smile:

How detailed is your city in OpenStreetMap ?

Brisbane is fairly detailed around the inner city areas as are most other Australian cities but don't think a lot of the buildings are accurate. Last time I used OSM2XP to export just the CBD area of Brisbane I noticed that all the buildings seem to have some sort of limit in height, in the sim the skyscrapers look a lot lower than they should be.

 

Brisbane city centre, much like Sydney and Melbourne has towering skyscrapers that are visible from a long distance even from the international airport and the OSM data doesn't seem to reflect this.

Then you'll have to contribute to the OpenStreetMap project. It's very easy to create an account and start adding objects or tags. OSM2XP and World2XPlane are able to use the height tag for buildings.

Last time I used OSM2XP to export just the CBD area of Brisbane I noticed that all the buildings seem to have some sort of limit in height, in the sim the skyscrapers look a lot lower than they should be.

 

Whilst no substitute for editing buildings manually in OSM. v0.4.0 of World2XPlane (Under Development) can be told to make buildings taller  (using a random height) when they are a certain radius from a city centre. This same is also used for villages to make sure the buildings aren't tall.
