February 18, 200521 yr HI Folks,Many thanks to Holger for his continuing efforts designing fantastic scenery. Unfortunately, I've got a problem trying to install Columbia on my system.I've installed the Columbia River Gorge scenery as per the instructions, but I can't get to any of the airports Holger listed in the readme. Here's what happens: When I try the "Go To Aiport" screen and search for one of the airports, such as WA78 Sky River, I see that there are 3 entries (exactly the same) for WA78 Sky River. Then when I click on one of them, I immediately get a CTD. I tried all of the airports listed in the readme and get a CTD with all. I checked all of the airports Holger mentioned in the readme and the following also have multiple entries: Port Eisner 2 entries, Trout Lake 2 entries, Rowena Dell 2 entries and Sky River 3 entries. SO, here's what I did to try figure out what is happening.1. I temporoarily removed every file from /addon scenery/scenery so there should be no other afcad files in the system.2. I set up a "pure" scenery.cfg which had the default entries and only the new entries for Columbia River. Therefore, there would be no other addons aside from Columbia River. I followed the readme very carefully and put /ZZZ_Corrected_AFCAD_Elevations between /Default Scenery and /Africa.3. I ran FS9 again and still had the same problem with multiple entries for the airpots I listed above as well as CTD when I tried to go to any of the airports. BTW, I was able to go to any other airport which wasn't part of the Columbia River package. So, I then disabled /ZZZ_Corrected_AFCAD_Elevations in scenery.cfg to see what effect that might have. Now, I no longer had multiple airport entries. I only had one entry for each airport, but I still couldn't go to them as I got the CTD.Has anybody else had any similar problem? I know others have had CTD's but in my case I can't get into any of the airports and I have the multiple listings for some of the airports.Any help would be appreciated.Thanks.....
February 19, 200521 yr Commercial Member Hi Howard, sorry to hear about those problems. It's the first time I've tried to adjust the location and altitude of the small airfields in the area, many of which are in the wrong places in FS9 default, which becomes very apparent once a high-res mesh is added (plateaus and trenches). The method I used was just recently suggested by colleagues in the scenery design forum but not yet "field tested". Guess it's not quite as stable as we hoped it was ;-(What is strange is that many people have no problems at all but others do, even with very basic set-ups like yours (and, btw, thanks for describing your test procedure!). I suspect that for some reason FS doesn't always fully update the Scenery Library files - those scenery.dat files that are in each add-on folder - and is more likely to fail if the new add-on entry is in a location between the default folders. One possible solution is to delete all scenery.dat files, thus forcing FS9 to rebuild all of them (we used to have to do that pretty regularly in FS2002).The other option is to use an alternative approach for achieving the altitude corrections for the AFCAD files. Here's what to do:1. De-activate the ZZZ_Corrected_AFCAD_Elevations folder in the Scenery Library2. Navigate to "US Columbia River Gorge sceneryscenery" and sort the contents by name3. Make a copy of the following AF2_*.bgl files and paste them into "FS9SceneryWorldscenery":AF2_02OR.bglAF2_28OR.bglAF2_36WA.bglAF2_4WA1.bglAF2_5WA7.bglAF2_66WA.bglAF2_68OR.bglAF2_6OR1.bglAF2_6OR2.bglAF2_75WA.bglAF2_7OR3.bglAF2_7OR6.bglAF2_OR50.bglAF2_OR60.bglAF2_S48.bglAF2_WA66.bglAF2_WA78.bgl4. Re-start FS9 and check for double-entries and/or crashes.Again, my apologies for those issues; I hope we'll eventually find out what exactly is causing this. Please let us know which alternative you tried and how you fared.Cheers, Holger
February 19, 200521 yr Hi, Holger and everyone.I think this is a great scenery and something that I was hoping it would get built for a long time. I have, and use, a similar Scenery in Fly!II, but one for the FS is long overdue. A long time ago I had the opportunity to fly the area in real life, now days it
February 19, 200521 yr < ..Map, I get a black screen on the Map area and a lock up of the FS, as soon as I enter the developed area. If I am at KPDX and go into the Map mode this does not occur, and I am sure your Scenery is loaded because I can see the additional detail on the map. I have to exit using the Task Manager, 2x Ctrl Alt Del.>>I have a similar problem but not by trying to access the map but rather ANY menu bar function. Either the screen freezes as is i.e. at the end of the runway...or it goes to black. And I can't get out by the 2x Ctril Alt Del method...just have to power down.I'll try launching from KPDX but I get the same issue at the Grand Tetons area as well.Hope this can get fixed.Regards,Jim
February 19, 200521 yr Hello Holger,Thanks for the prompt reply......I tried both suggestions but unfortunately neither fixed the CTD. But, they did fix the multiple airport listings - I now have only one entry per airport. BTW, I ran your suggestions on my "pure default" scenery.cfg (no other addons enabled) and with no afcad files in /addon scenery.I then removed all AF2_*.bgl files from the Columbia River package, but still got CTD when trying to go to one of the CRG airports.I also tried going to a CRG airport by entering the coordinates in MAP view, but still CTD.If you have any other suggestion, please let me know....I appreciate your efforts.
February 20, 200521 yr Commercial Member Hi Howard,I don't think any of my AFCAD files would be responsible for CTDs as they work perfectly fine on may other user's systems. The tweaks above were just meant to remove the double entries or missing start positions in the Goto Airport menu. Two more suggestions:1. Run ScanAFD (link in the docs) to check for duplicate AFCAD files in the area.2. Reload your FS9Sceneryworldtexture folder from you FS9 disks. You don't necessarily have to overwrite the contents of your current texture folder just make sure that there aren't any of the default textures missing. In general, CTDs are usually caused either by the "seasonal CTD" bug (cured with FS9.1), corrupted or duplicate AFCAD files (check with scanAFD), conflicting add-ons (deactivate temporarily) or missing textures (re-load default textures). There might be other causes but these are most common so you should focus on eliminating these in a systematic fashion.Cheers, Holger
February 20, 200521 yr Hello Howard and Holger,Howard, you are not alone. I have had the same problems as yours and have tried all of Holger's suggestions with the same results. No double airports but CTDs. I have CTDs both when starting from an airport within Holger's scenery area and when flying into the scenery area from an airport outside of the area. Holger, any other suggestions? Thanks,Dan
February 20, 200521 yr Hi,I do not have CTD's but all of a sudden have the double entries in the airport list, even those of Misty Fjords and Misty Moorings. I keep my Afcad2-files in a separate folder "Addon Afcad2Scenery" which is activated in the scenery.cfg.I just found out that I had to move my Afcad folder UNDER the "ZZZ_Corrected_AFCAD_Elevations". As I have that one installed as per Holger's instruction, my Afcad folder is now between "ZZZ_Corrected_AFCAD_Elevations" and "Default Scenery".No double entries anymore in the airport list.Holger, thanks for this great scenery !Ciao, PeterIntel Mobo D875PBZ with Intel CPU P4 3.20GHz2.0 Gig 333MHz DDR SDRAMAsus / NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700 (Omega 1.6177) (Q) (256 MB)Monitor Samsung SyncMaster 19"CH Yoke and PedalsWindows XP SP2
February 21, 200521 yr Author Holger -Am I doing something to cause these artifacts shown in the attachments?(1) humps in the Columbia River level near the eastern edge of your scenery zone(2) bridge "wreckage" just east of The Dalles Dam and at the I-5 crossing of the Willamette (Wilsonville).Tried to follow your advice to the letter. My only other add-on in this region is the FSGenesis cascaderange, which per your instructions is above your mesh in the priority list.I see no river discontinuity at the western edge. Thanks,John
February 21, 200521 yr Commercial Member Hi John, the jump in elevation on the left side of the first picture is approximately where the John Day dam is in real life and thus intentional (it's outside of my coverage area so there's no dam or other detail). However the triangle on the right side of the picture is my mistake; it should be at the lower water level. I'm planning on a small update package anyway and will fix that bit - thanks for spotting it.The stray default bridge in the second image indicates that the exclude file isn't working properly: the Columbia River Gorge "_landclass" entry needs to be *above* the "_scenery" entry in your Scenery Library!Don't know about the third bridge; looks like one of the default bridges that are badly mangled. You could set up and exclude to get rid of it but it's unrelated to my Columbia River Gorge files.Cheers, Holger
February 21, 200521 yr Commercial Member Hi Dan,not really any new ideas other than that CTDs at 50-70% loading (when trying to start a flight) indicate missing textures. Someone over in the Hovercontrol forum managed to get rid of his CTDs by re-loading the default FS9Sceneryworldtexture folder: http://www.hovercontrol.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ik...=ST;f=1;t=10430Don't click on the link but rather copy the entire URL into your browser window.Good luck!Cheers, Holger
February 21, 200521 yr Crap, that 3rd pic is scary!!Holger, I just wanted to thank you for this great scenery (and all your other work) I've spent the last few days flying up and down the river, really amazing work. Any chance of more AI boats, I love that feature, both there and in MF. (now if I can just get back to Misty Fjords soon)For the record, I haven't had a single problem with it, no CTDs and everything looks great. I'm running with a fresh install (installed a new pri HD), the patch (+ the noCD patch), and most of my payware GA and scenery.I hope those with problems get it sorted out, it is a wonderful scenery addon!Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://www.calvirair.com/mcpics/PBTMCa.jpgCalVirAir International VACalVirAir International Best, Michael KDFW
February 21, 200521 yr Author Holger -Thanks -- I will await your river elevation fix.Still having trouble with the bridges. Actually, your landclass is above the mesh and the ZZZ* files at the bottom. My priority list is in the attachment.Any further advice would be most welcome.John
February 21, 200521 yr Right on Holger! I reloaded textures from my original FS 2004 cd's to /scenery/world/texture and Columbia works great. Many thanks for your help - and wonderful sceneries - all of them.I'll be posting another message (probably tomorrow) about how I set up the default texture files in /scenery/world/. Reason: I have installed many many (etc.) scenery addons, including some which have added files to scenery/world/texture. To give you an idea - the default scenery/world/texture from FS2004 cd (#4) has 3,881 objects and it's size is 187 mb. My scenery/world/texture with addons has 4,266 objects at 206 mb. Since I don't know if any of the default textures (from FS 2004 cd) would override some of my addon textures, I set up a separate holding folder for the original default textures. My post tomorrow will explain it in detail.Have a good one.
