June 14, 201411 yr Hello, I had a couple of questions on programming the FMS. I was playing around with the sim and programming the FMS to fly a short flight in this case KISO (Kinston, NC)- KHSV (Huntsville, AL). I programmed these as the destination/origin in the route page. I selected to takeoff rwy 5 at KISO and go to RWY 36 in KHSV. When I go to the legs page I put KGSO as a waypoint. I got a message that said route discontinuity My questions/comments are this- 1- I program a route and get a discontinuity message when I try to program waypoints regardless of what the destination is. What am I doing wrong? 2- When I noticed the discontinuity I attempted to delete the waypoint causing this condition but the fms just said invalid delete. I am only human, if I enter a wrong waypoint is there a way to delete it so there is no discontinuity without generating a invalid delete message Every flight I use the fms for, I cannot figure a way around this problem. Thanks, Austin Johnson I would like to apolgise for posting 4 of the same postings, the internet was being slow and I don't know how to delete the other postings. I was unaware there were so many postings until they showed up. Austin Johnson
June 14, 201411 yr You should enter route in RTE pages, not in legs page. Why you tried to put airport as route waypoint anyway? You can solve discontinuity by selecting waypoint below discontinuity and overwriting it over discontinuity. June 14, 201411 yr Commercial Member Austin,Have you done the tutorial flight? Using airports as enroute waypoints isn't something that's done in real life on airliners like the 777. You should be using normal navigation aids - VORs, airspace fixes etc. Ryan MaziarzFor fastest support, please submit a ticket at http://support.precisionmanuals.com
June 14, 201411 yr What I've been taught in general is enter the route on the ROUTE page, and deletions (for any reason, i.e. you make a mistake) are done on the LEGS page. Steve W.
June 14, 201411 yr Author I didn't do the tutorial flight, I tried using some vor navaids. I put a destination-orgin and runway in the route page Then, I selected my dep/arr runways in the dep/arr page Regardless of if I activate the route or not the legs page has a route discount. Why wont the FMS at least give me a chance to enter the legs I want before telling me I have a discount. Thanks Austin Johnson

You do not know how to use your aircraft, go and fly tutorial flight - step by step. Lj. June 14, 201411 yr Author Well, I looked into the turtorial and found that if you copy a waypoint and paste it it will close the discont. I applied this in the sim and it seems to fix the problem Thanks for your help everyone. Austin Johnson
June 14, 201411 yr I told you to do that hour ago. Lj. Prodanovic
June 14, 201411 yr Commercial Member Hey Captain, I'll echo what others have said. You're not using the FMS correctly, thus you're not going to get the correct result. Going through the Tutorial Flight is going to show you how to use it, and it will take a lot less time than trial and error or posting here. Not saying you shouldn't post here, but to save yourself time just run through the tutorial flight. Remember the other documentation is there to! PMDG aircraft as "learning" simulators, and I'm grateful for the excellent documentation they provided to us. I'm sure you'll fell the same way! Good luck... looking forward to hearing back from you here in the forums! As Kyle would also say, discontinuities are NOT a bad thing and do NOT always have to be closed - often at this point ATC will vector you, or you may need a STAR (Standard Terminal Arrival) procedure. Trying to always close the magenta line often results in the FMS giving up because of a hopelessly steep final descent path. Wes Meyer
June 14, 201411 yr Simply fly the step by step tut. a couple of times. The team (well, i guess it was mainly Ryans work :-) ) did a great job. (There is a reason why they are called Precision Manuals Dev. Group ) I remember when i started off with the MD11 a couple of yeara ago, the tutorial flight helped me to understand just everything, not only the aircraft systems but also the main basiics of navigation and flight procedures. Try it, you won't be disappointed ;-) regards, Alexander Marx
June 15, 201411 yr Discontinuities are normal. Not an error! Every time you choose a SID or STAR you end up with discontinuities. It is the pilots job to tell the FMC how (where) to connect the EROUTE airway structure to the SID/STAR ! The best advice here has been given several times already....read and do the tutorial! It does, but only in RTE page. You do not know how to use your aircraft, go and fly tutorial flight - step by step. You can enter route legs on the LEGS page perfectly well. The RTE page allows you to enter airways and therefore multiple legs but using LEGS page one waypoint at a time works too. His disco problem was caused by trying to add an airport as a waypoint.

I think the issue here was a little more basic than when I'd usually drop that info here, but you're definitely right. Close it if it makes sense to close it, but always confirm with the charts (if it's related to the SID/STAR). Kyle Rodgers
