September 10, 201411 yr How far of topic are we going here? I guess I kind of started it, but maybe the single CPU thingy is a bit off topic but my questions aren't all that much off topic. The topic is: vegetation yes or no? Well only an idiot would say no.. because everyone wants it to look better if you can.. However, it comes at a cost.. FPS.. and therefore we are / I am discussing how I or others can do it without killing your FPS.. "If flying was the language of man, then soaring would be it's poetry"
September 10, 201411 yr Well only an idiot would say no.. That's a bit strong, isn't it? I've it off at the moment because it doesn't look so well with flashing, flickering shadows. Am I an idiot now? Spirit
September 10, 201411 yr That's a bit strong, isn't it? I've it off at the moment because it doesn't look so well with flashing, flickering shadows. Am I an idiot now? Spirit Well that is one way to take things too personal.. I was merely pointing out the fact that we were not going off topic with the subject of pc capabilities considering the high resource demands of vegetation. September 10, 201411 yr That's a bit strong, isn't it? I've it off at the moment because it doesn't look so well with flashing, flickering shadows. Am I an idiot now? Spirit Apart from taking it too personal indeed ^_^ I am sure you are in fact saying YES to vegetations shadows: it's just that right now you can't use them because of problems with flashing and flickering. Hence your current temporarily NO. So even if lrcghost would have meant it as personal as you took it, which he didn't, you wouldn't be an idiot... ^_^ Peace, brothers...! Out of curiosity: @lrcghost: do you have vegetation (cast and/or receive) on or is still to heavy?
September 10, 201411 yr Apart from taking it too personal indeed ^_^ I am sure you are in fact saying YES to vegetations shadows I would set it to YES if I would have got the right settings yet, so I'm obviously NOT an idiot. But one thing is for sure true, that we should avoid using such words especially in this kind of context. Spirit

September 10, 201411 yr Jeroen got me using the Veggi cast shadows ... there isn't much of an fps hit (if any) once I exited and restarted P3D. I don't do receive on trees (I do on buildings) because of the way trees are present as an object ... they are essentially a two plane objects (like a big Plus sign) so when "receive" is enabled the shadows just don't look right. But cast veggie does look better and doesn't seem to impact performance even in dense veggie locations. Cheers, Rob.
September 10, 201411 yr I guess I kind of started it, but maybe the single CPU thingy is a bit off topic but my questions aren't all that much off topic. The topic is: vegetation yes or no? Well only an idiot would say no.. because everyone wants it to look better if you can.. However, it comes at a cost.. FPS.. and therefore we are / I am discussing how I or others can do it without killing your FPS.. The way I enabled vegetation (and building) shadows for send and receive without killing my fps was to go back and revisit my baseline graphics setup. I've been flying X-Plane 10 a lot lately and in my XPX setup I stay above 30 fps, usually 40 - 50 fps. I have a powerful system but I had to lower the graphics settings in XPX from max to get that framerate. I found that the sim experience on XPX is much more fluid and responsive when I am well above 30 fps. After seeing the original post in this thread and loving the way that vegetation shadows looked, I went back to my P3Dv2 graphics settings with the goal of having a framerate at or above 30 fps in almost all situations (luckily I stay away from the largest airports) and getting that framerate with vegetation and building shadows enabled. My previous settings had almost all of the sliders to the far right and I came off of those settings a good bit. Amazingly I find it very hard to tell the difference in graphic quality but the fluidity and responsiveness of the experience is much improved. Here are my settings: When I get around big airports or large cities I have to drop down my traffic settings to maintain a framerate > 30 fps. I've been very happy with this setup and can't stress how much more fluid and responsive the sim is as opposed to when I was averaging mid to low 20's in framerate and dropping below 20 in complex areas.
September 10, 201411 yr Could you post a picture of how it looks for you? "If flying was the language of man, then soaring would be it's poetry"

September 11, 201411 yr Jeroen got me using the Veggi cast shadows ... there isn't much of an fps hit (if any) once I exited and restarted P3D. Im genuinely surprised - tried veg shadows cast and don't see much of a fps hit either, and that's with a GTX680...
September 11, 201411 yr Amazingly I find it very hard to tell the difference in graphic quality I find the difference between Extremely dense autogen and Very dense noticable already, let alone the difference between Extremely dense and Normal...! I couldn't live with Normal! Although it depends on how you fly, or course. When I am going to get the Airbus 318 I will probably lower some settings too. ^_^
September 11, 201411 yr It's the little things like these which can really sum up in the end 4 a much more enjoyable experience, well worth the small perf hit specially if you spend your time low https://www.youtube.com/user/JustaRandomSimmer Simulator Videos http://sierra-hotel.blogspot.com Aviation Picture Blog
