September 19, 201411 yr Keep us updated please, you've tossed some high settings at it ... with the new 344.11 drivers I'm not using NI and the nVidia Control Panel is set to defaults for Prepar3d.exe. Cheers, Rob.

I was also thinking of the 5820, any regrets and have you done any additional testing? Nick Sciortino
September 26, 201411 yr A week ago I upgraded my PC with an MSI X99s SLI plus, I7 5820 @ 3.30GHz, 16GB DDR4 2400Mhz and an M.2 SATA SSD. I haven't explored a wide range of scenarios so far but my test flights have been reasonably demanding - MJ Dash 8, REX textures, ASN, Horizon, Earth Simulations IoM and Guernsey, Megascenery Earth Photoscenery, and UK2000 and Aerosoft Airports. FSX is on a dedicated SSD. Running at stock and with FSX scenery settings at or near Max, AI aircraft at 20% the results have been extremely impressive. FPS has been high teens to high 20s and always supersmooth. Scenery loads quickly (LOD set at 8.0) with no trace of blurring. Following advice in another thread I have set AF at 4084 (HT on) which gives the following core activity as per Task Manager - Cores 0, 1 and 3 =variable activity; Cores 2 and 4- 11 = max when over land scenery. More demanding testing is planned particularly with PMDG aircraft and stormy weather conditions but so far I have not felt any need to overclock or even fire up Fiber Accelerator Michael Turner
September 26, 201411 yr I've just done a couple of flights in the PMDG 737NGX over Southern England Horizon Scenery - Slightly lower FPS especially in heavier clouds but still very smooth with sharp visuals no blurries. The only problem now is the rapid onset of OOMS because of the high graphics settings especially when flying over or near London ( I might have to uninstall the VFR London package) Michael Turner
September 27, 201411 yr I have had a MSI X99S Gaming & , but I wanted to do more detailed overclocking, so I returned the mobo and got me a MSI X99S XPower. Currently I am running the cpu at 4.5 GHz / memory 2426mhz. That is super stable an dgood enough for Fs. LOD at 5.5 ( 3 screens ) , aircraft at 50% and car traffic at 40% . No Widescreen option checked ( checking it cost me 20% fps... ) Like Michael I am very satisfied with the new hardware. 5950x3d 5.4-5.7 GHz - Asus ROG 870 Crosshair Apex - GSkill Neo 2x 24 Gb 6000 mhz / cas 26 - MSI RTX 5090 Gaming Trio OC - 1x SSD M2 6000 2TB - 1x SSD M2 2800/1800 1Tb - Corsair 5400 case - Corsair 360 liquid cooling set - 3x 75’ TCL tv. 13600 6 cores @ 5.1 GHz / 8 cores @ 4.0 GHz (hypterthreading on) - Asus ROG Strix Gaming D - GSkill Trident 4x Gb 3200 MHz cas 15 - Asus TUF RTX 4080 16 Gb - 1x SSD M2 2800/1800 2TB - 2x Sata 600 SSD 500 Mb - Corsair D4000 Airflow case - NXT Krajen Z63 AIO liquide cooling - FOV : 200 degrees My flightsim vids : https://www.youtube.com/user/fswidesim/videos?shelf_id=0&sort=dd&view=0

Hi there Sorry to necro this old thread, but how are you getting on with the 5820K nowadays? With that 5820K overclocked, are you able to give some FPS figures? EDIT: Oops managed to miss your FPS figures for P3D Sounds great! I am also searching around for any FSX / XPlane numbers on the 5820K and 5930K, I don't suppose you went through installation hell to get those bad boys on your system too by any chance? Cheers Ross
October 27, 201411 yr Good afternoon, then do not you think it's still worth picking up the i7 5960x? Has anyone ever tested this machine to see improvements in FSX ?? October 31, 201411 yr Small update with more info to come later: I fried my chip. I put too much voltage into it and the memory controller decided it couldn't handle 4 channels anymore, so it dropped 1 channel, then another. Fortunately, I bought the Intel overclocking warranty and the replacement sits on my desk awaiting a new mounting kit for my water block and some different thermal paste to try. I should have everything up and running again some time next week, with results to follow. For the sake of clarity, I fried the chip, it did not die under normal operating conditions. The voltage I used was definitely outside the range of what any sane person would ever use on a $1000 chip that they purchased and were not given. I realized very early on that the specific chip I bought was a particularly poor overclocker so I decided to push it until it popped so that I could get a replacement that hopefully will OC better. For reference, the "average" 5960x is expected to hit 4.5GHz with approximately 1.3V. Mine needed 1.5+. Poor overclocker indeed.
October 31, 201411 yr For reference, the "average" 5960x is expected to hit 4.5GHz with approximately 1.3V. Mine needed 1.5+. Poor overclocker indeed. Ouch, what were you using to cool it -- assume you disabled thermal protection? I've read several articles on the 5960x and most seem stuck at a "safe" 4.4 to 4.5Ghz ... but 4.8Ghz is still doable on standard water cooler units. Tom's has a nice video showing the heat ... at 4.8Ghz it gets very hot quickly. But with adequate cooling (chiller not just a air/water) I would have thought 4.8Ghz would be possible stable ... 5.2Ghz stable is attainable on the 3960x using this: http://koolance.com/exc-800-portable-800W-recirculating-chiller Some overclocking results here: http://techreport.com/review/26977/intel-core-i7-5960x-processor-reviewed/14 I'm still undecided 4790K, 3930K, 5960X ... http://www.anandtech.com/show/8426/the-intel-haswell-e-cpu-review-core-i7-5960x-i7-5930k-i7-5820k-tested/3 I'm most interested in time between frames on the 5960X ... if you get a chance would love to see those results including P3D graphics settings used. Cheers, Rob.
October 31, 201411 yr I'm on a custom water cooling solution I put together a couple years ago when I built my 3770k rig and ran at 4.9GHz de-lidded. It's a very capable loop, can handle 500-600W depending on fan speed. My other loop for graphics cards can handle close to 1000W B)
November 7, 201411 yr Update: turns out I wasted my CPU warranty as the issue was not the CPU after all, it was the motherboard! Time to send in the motherboard...
