Are there "white caps" in ocean scenerey? (Or an addon for it?)

Featured Replies

I can't recall ever see white caps while flying over the ocean... even in high winds. Are there any? Are there any add-ons that add white caps? It seems they should show up even under moderate conditions.

Hmmm, seems something that REX could simulate. It might take a little more than just a texture though as whitecaps should only appear during certain weather.

I'm getting what appear to be whitecaps on the water but these are the effect of the light shining and not wave motion.

This.

The 3rd party SDK that LM uses in P3d that does the water effects does have the ability to display white caps, but either it is not implemented in P3d or I have never seen them. You can experiment by flying the Robinson to the shoreline of the ocean. Land and then in the P3d UI create user defined weather with the maximum wind speed. You will see major waves, but no whitecaps. There are even whitecap  TGA and BMP texture files included in the Triton SDK:

<drive>:\Program Files (x86)\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3d v2\3rd Party\TritonResources

Here's what the foam, spray and whitecaps are supposed to look like:

LM is yet to implement water in all it's glory. The whitecaps 'issue' was raised some time ago and it was told that LM will improve the water and bring back the whitecaps effect. Of course, it won't be looking the same as FSX DX9, because this is a new tech, supposed to be looking MUCH better and act a lot more realistic. I think 2.4 water already look way better than previous versions so definitely, LM is stepping in the right direction, just give 'em time.
