SIMstarter Version 2.5 released!

Recommended Posts

After several days of developing I would like to proudly present Version 2.5.

Main changes:

  • The new StartManager makes it possible to create so-called RunSets which can assign to multiple SIMstarter profiles. You can define programs task-priority and the window mode. In addition its possible to modify existing RunSets which makes handling much easier

  • JumpStart has the feature to select your starting position prior starting the simulator (looks pretty the same that in-game). For users who like JumpStart more than the normal view its possible to define "Jumpstart" as new starting screen

  • FTX Global Regions can be switched before starting a profile (just set the path of your FTX Global and tick "FTX Central Reminder" in program settings)

  • User manual is available in french. Thanks to Laurent who did that awesome work!

Several bugfixes has been done as well... ;O)

Please find download on my website! ;O)

Great news! If I wasn't away on business travel I'd give it a try... Will definitely add to my list of to-dos when I get back home.

Thank you.

Yes indeed. I am using EU Scotland, England and FTX Global. The FTX Switch was the best solution in comparision to keep SIMstarter updated in case of changes at FTX Central. No re-engineering needed and SIMstarter should be compatible with all changes regarding FTX Scenaries. ;O)

I get "file not found" when I try to download. Does this version take the new steam version into consideration? I just moved everything to the steam version.... Thanks!

Thanks a lot! I had a permission problem after updating the website platform.

Sorry, I did not tested the Steam version until yet. Maybe you can? ;O)

It works like a champ with FSX:SE even running fsx.exe instead of the steam url.

Now, I did remove the boxed version from my pc and am only running steam version which installs in c:\steam\steamapps\common\FSX but uses the same ancillary directories and same registry keys. Not sure how a dual install will work (or not).

Thanks for a great app!

This is fantastic but I cannot use it with my FSX Steam Edition (I have FSX normal installed as well).

In program settings the Path to fsx.cfg causes a "Cannot save Configuration" error as SE uses fsx_se.cfg instead of fsx_cfg

C:\Users\my_username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX-SE\fsx_se.CFG

Regards Kym

Hi Kym,

at this point SIMstarter is not compatible to FSX Steam Edition.

I am not sure if it will be compatible in future...

Thanks for your reply Pero.

I'll keep my fingers crossed.

FSX-SE is lookiing pretty good.

It doesn't matter how much scenery I have and how many mega airports and heavey airliners, there's just no OOM errors even with all settings maxed out whereas FSX dies in an instant with settings about halfway and even Prepar3D spits the dummy despite giving it the best machine I can afford.

FSX-SE has given me a lot of hope with FINALLY, hassle free and stable flying without unloading anything or running with sliders a half mast.

Like I say, I'll keep my fingers crossed as I like the flexibility offered by SIMstarter and have been enjoying watching it grow :-)

I'll keep it for P3D which I won't dump just yet.

Keep up the good work.

Regards Kym

Hi Kym,

yes. Keep fingers crossed. If once FSX-SE becomes more important for the whole community (and my use *lol*) I will have a look on it.

Hi Capt.Pero,

Come on now, of course it should be important for your own use :-)

Here's the challenge:-

1. Buy it.

2. Install it.

3. Max out all the settings.

4. Fly from your second largest airport accross detailed scenery to your largest airport and thrash the hell out of it.

5. See it you can get an OOM error or CTD as you will on any machine with FSX or Prepare3D.

You know you can't even take off from some major airports with FSX or P3D with everything maxed out, leave alone see rediculous amounts of remaining VAS and usable frame rates.

I'm sure like me, you'll wish Dovetail Games got behind FSX years ago :-)

Best Regards - Kym

Hi Pero

Congratulations for your great SimStarter! A really very helpul tool for FSX, which I recently started to get to know.

My current SimStarter version (2.3.02) keeps reminding me to update to the latest version. But checking your website mentiones that updating requires at least version 2.4.01. How should I proceed to keep my settings and profiles? Remove the current version and install the new one or is there a link to version 2.4.01?

Thanks for your help!

I might be missing something here (Senior Moment) but what does this program do to make my FSX better?

Apart from giving easy access to parts of the FSX.cfg file?

I just downloaded the latest version and am still trying to understand how to make a profile from an existing saved flight.  Not having much luck but I did discover something very important to me.  That was when saving the fsx.cfg to the main profile while trying to understand the program, I found that all my scenery all suddenly started looking sharper even using photoscenery from Megascenery.  I checked the status of the fsx.cfg for changes and noticed that all of the "trusted files" were moved to the bottom of the page with the only thing below it was the Multiplayer text.  If this is the only thing that was changed then that is a revolution for all of those complaining about blurry scenery.  I just wish there was a YouTube video that shows the step by step method of setting up a profile from an existing flight.  Maybe someone will get around to it to help this old guy understand better.  Thanks for the program I can see its potential but just the fact that my blurry scenery is now fixed would be enough for me right now.  Norm

Thank you for testing SIMstarter.

I would like to make clear, that SIMstarter is not a "booster-performance-no-blurry-magic" tool. SIMstarter is a tool to handle different configurations in case of fsx.cfg, scenery.cfg, EXE.XML, DLL.XML and "some" intelligent features to help you handeling your simulator.

Therefore SIMstarter will help you to figure out, which settings are important (change log included) to get rid of your blurries, but it is a "normal" configuration testing procedure. You could say, its an powerful configuration editor.

I hope it helped to understand the benefits of SIMstarter. ;O)

pero, I am sure that it is just a side effect on my system but I am still pleased from the effect it has on my sim.  Maybe just manually moving the "trusted files" to the bottom of the fsx.cfg would have worked just the same but whatever caused it I am pleased.  Now for that video on how to configure the simstarter program would be a great help for those of us with over 20 years flying FSX from BAO days onward would benefit from the tutorial.  I am getting easily confused lately since I passed the 75 year mark.  Thanks again for building such a in depth program as I am sure once I master its functions will be of great use.  fisheye

You are right. I have started creating a quick guide video some month ago. I will overthink this. At these days I am working on the documentation and releasing v2.6 of SIMstarter. ;O)

paro;  I have been working on this program for the last two hours without success in creating a Profile 2 "low and slow" with a saved flight.  I checked my fsx.cfg after the last of many attempts and found two entries for the "situation" heading. Did I do something wrong?

[userinterface]

displayfuelasweight =0

map_orientation =2

openatconcreate =0

pause_on_lost_focus =1

prompt_on_exit =0

pageid =1

show_mission_captions =1

situation =C:\Users\Norm\Documents\Flight Simulator X Files\Aspen Super Cub Parked

selectaircraftmanufacturer =All

selectaircraftpublisher =All

selectaircrafttype =All

showallacpaintschemes =1

SITUATION=C:\Users\Norm\Documents\Flight Simulator X Files\KMYF TBM 850 to KPSP.flt

I manually commented out the original "situation=" as simstarter added the bottom entry and am going to see if it will now go to the flight correctly. fisheye

paro;  No joy,  when I went to the fsx.cfg in FSX and commented out the original "situation" entry and then tried to start it from the simstarter profile 2 interface it removed the // and didn't start the saved Profile 2 settings.  I am really confused about now.  fisheye
