February 21, 201511 yr (...) As I was reading this article I had to check the page banner to make sure it wasn't one of these sneaky 'Advertisement Features' that are so common now. Quite some advertising in this topic, too. What happened to AVSIM
February 21, 201511 yr Commercial Member What on earth went wrong with your comparative testing between FSX & FSX-SE in PC Pilot Jane Whittaker? You present a case for performance in FSX-SE that is quite remarkable compared to the boxed version. Going from 200fps with a clean install, to 300fps using Bojote's tweaking tool, while you seem to insinuate the boxed version only achieved 30 to 40fps with a clean install, dropping to under 20fps with add-ons (and that is turning detail down to minimum!!!) compared to 50 to 60fps with FSX-SE :o I know some people have managed better results with FSX-SE (I get pretty much identical performance, and within margin of error, add-ons or not) but your results seem ridiculously and quite frankly unbelievably skewed in FSX-SE's favour for some reason  I hope people, who buy and trust PC Pilot magazine don't go running to the Steam version expecting this massive improvement in performance, as I fear it simply won't be there. As I was reading this article I had to check the page banner to make sure it wasn't one of these sneaky 'Advertisement Features' that are so common now. these performance tests were done by Richard Benedikz for the magazine and I will pass your comments on to him in the hope that he can reply in detail to you. - Jane Whittaker
February 21, 201511 yr It would be of interest, in the mean time I hope people take these results with a bloody huge pinch of salt. I also hope those with perfectly good working installs of MS-FSX don't purchase SE-FSX under the illusion it will be a performance nirvana. Of course they will be able to buy all that lovely DLC so all won't be lost.
February 24, 201511 yr What would be really helpful would be a short explanation of how to install freeware add-ons into Steam. Aircraft are not too difficult but I would like to add Scenery as well. I am using Win 7 and have memories of having to click in the blank area in the Scenery window to make add-on freeware scenery install. Does Steam require a similar "trick"? I have FSX SE on one of my old PC's and must say the performance is good. Thank you Tregarth

Yes, just that precisely! B) Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
