How Do You Use Default ATC?

Featured Replies

I have some questions about the default ATC if no one minds.  1. Anyone know why the default atc starts vectors 50 to 100 miles out?  It seems like they should start 20 or 30 out.  2.  Why do they turn to you to downwind right as soon as they say expect vectors?  They should give you a vector to the airport, then when closer in, give you a vector to for downwind about 10 nm away from the airport.  If you're on a base entry, they should set you up for about 12 to 15 nm away from the airport.  If anyone knows the answers, I'd be very grateful.  Thanks.

I love this thread, lots of great ideas to help default atc do what i want, thanks all!

Like many others, i dabble in atc addons - RC4 off and on, PFE very briefly (that was one purchase i really regret) - but i always end up coming back to default atc with a heavily modified voicepack. For me it's the ease of use, flexibility, and wide range of callsigns that do it for me.

I'd be interested to know what sort of modifications you made. Presumably you can back up the original in case things go pear shaped!

By the way, I'm still waiting for an ATC add-on with a "Boston John" voice set.

EditVoicePack will create a backup automatically.

Most of the mods are those that i've downloaded here or that are provided by editvoicepack. Basically airline callsigns, airports etc along with numerous other mods from avsim that make the tower provide winds at take off/landing and generally say more realistic things. I've added some airport names over the years myself too.

The funny thing is that i've been building/adding/tweaking my voicepack file for so long (as long as there have been programs to do so) that i really can't remember much about what the original voicepack sounded like.

A good way to get started is with editvoicepack, that alone will make some great improvements. And yes i always keep a copy of the original voicepack file too, although i've bever had to revert to it.
