Volumetric fog or not?

Featured Replies

Here's my argument. I've been flying full P3D for about 2-3 weeks. One week with my GTX970.  As I have reported around some other post I am getting superb performance. For example I am flying right now JFK-PUJ on the NGX. In FSDT JFK and the NGX and 45% UT2 AI traffic I was getting 2 4AVG frames. Using ASN for weather. The thing is, I have not seen any weather scenario where I can see Volumetric Fog being used. I have flown in less than optimal weather about 3-5 SM Vis, Yet Volumetric fog was not actively used. Instead I had a cloud overcast layer and then haze around the airport. Back to my current flight. Just for giggles I turned of Volumetric Fog in the settings. I gained about 4-5 FPS and it was not even being used! The weather at JFK was Clear skies 10+SM Vis.

So why have it on for that one day that it will be used but might not even get generated if its costing me performance? I am excited to read your thoughts!

I'm curious about an answer as well, I've been flying DFW-MIA-JFK-YYZ and have yet to V Fog...maybe its ASN?

Thats what I am thinking. I dont thing ASN uses VFog for anything. Today I had an overcast layer arriving at KATL at 5000 and 5SM visibility. I had a bunch of 3D clouds and then I had haze at in the horizon. Never did I see Vfog. Yet I turned it off and gained 5FPS instantly. With no visual impact.

ASN definitely uses volumetric fog. However it's difficult to notice if the layer doesn't intersect with terrain (like hills, valleys, mountains etc) I feel the performance trade off for volumetric fog is quite worth it. It's one of the things that really separates P3D from FSX visually.

I agree with molleh!

Just as a side note for some that complain about blurry scenery -

be SURE that what you are calling "blurry" isn't just the terrain being slightly blurred by the VF.

I've noticed that in certain situations with VF, it can make the terrain less sharp - which is what you would expect from fog, it's just that sometimes it is so subtle you don't realize the effect is working.
