What's The Big Deal About 6%?

I've always wondered what exactly FSX is loading at 6%?  That "spot" is by far the longest pause in the loading sequence for me.

That is the point where the sim is loading terrain mesh. If you install high-resolution mesh like FS Genesis or FS Global Ultimate, the pause at the 6 percent point becomes even longer, as the enhanced terrain mesh files are much larger than the defaul FSX mesh.

I have global and free mesh plus some custom Orbx mesh so 6% has become an eternity.

One thing I have noticed is that the very long pause at 6 percent only seems to occur the first time I load the sim. If I exit completely, then re-start, it only pauses at 6 percent for a few seconds. I have file indexing turned off on my Win 7 installation, but even so, it appears that once the multitude of individual mesh files have been accessed by the OS once, it finds and loads them much more quickly on subsequent start-ups of FSX. (P3D does the same thing).

However, if I reboot the computer, it goes back to the long pause on the first run of the sim.

Hi Jim, Cashing on the drive and in Windows means that sim files take less time to load after they have been read once. Regards.

Has not been an issue since I went with SSD's.

I have all SSDs in my rig and I still have the 6% pause.  I've gotten used to it though.  Come to think of it, I get the 6% pause, the 27% pause, the 82% pause.  If 6% is at the point of loading mesh and 82% is for traffic, what is happening at 27%?

27% may be any photoscenery but I would need to check.
